  1. On a related note, in my own little BRP hack:

    The Rule of One.  If the die representing the ones digit comes up a 1, that is a special result.  If the roll succeeded, it is a special success, henceforth known as a critical.  If the roll failed, it is a special failure, henceforth known as a fumble.  A critical is a better result than a success, which is better than a failure, which is better than a fumble, or: CRITICAL > SUCCESS > FAILURE > FUMBLE

    I dig Mythras' approach to skills, but I'm also wondering about the conceal skill.  I get what it's for in general, but it seems awfully specialized to devote a whole skill to.  On the other hand, maybe it has far more applications than I'm thinking of.  So, whaddya got?  I'll start with one:

    Hiding a car off-road by covering it with branches ...

  4. I think I recall someone saying that Cthulhu By Gaslight had some advantage / disadvantage type traits, but don't quote me on that.  Someone else might be able to confirm or deny.

    The Big Gold Book has powers that could cover supernatural / superpowered merits, and there some character failings in the superpower section that you could mine for disadvantages.  You could also look to the wound tables for material that could mimic physical handicap disadvantages.

    In general, I think fans of BRP aren't usually too into the whole advantage / disadvantage thing, so there's just not a ton that I know of in official products, but it's certainly no harder to cobble together than for most systems.  Advantages just tend to be powers, or just bonuses to skills / attributes, or something that can be easily incorporated into a character's background (wealth, connections, etc.), or just plain roleplayed; disadvantages can just be the reverse of any of those.

  5. Pg. 39: Did you mean "Aristoteles" rather than the more common "Aristotle"?  I know it's technically correct, but it might cause some confusion.

    Pg. 168: "Psychic" is used instead of "Psionic" as per page 208.  Also in the powers list, the third term "psi" is used.  Obviously, all the same thing, but it might be better to avoid any potential confusion.

That's a good question.  I thought I heard that the BGB would be available as POD at some point.  It would be lovely if there were some corrections added (they took care of quite a few between the softcover and hardcover, IIRC), but I won't get my hopes up - I'm sure they have plenty of more important projects to worry about right now.

  7. So, just to name a couple of examples, and I think most BRP games fall into these two camps:

     

    The BGB does critical > special > success > failure > fumble; criticals are 1/20 the chance of success.

    Legend skips the special and just does critical > success > failure > fumble; criticals are 1/10 the chance of success.

     

    Preferences?  Pros and cons?  I'm especially thinking in terms of melee combat, attacks rolls v. parry or dodge.  Does one way or the other speed up or slow down combat?  What are your experiences with all that?

I've only run the Savage Worlds version of Wellstone City, but having said that, it's basically real-world current day modern tech.  Mostly, the setting is just "fluff," in the good sense - background ideas, descriptions of the boroughs, etc.  The only crunch I recall was some new ammo types, and then a variety of NPCs.  Honestly, you could buy either the Aether or SW version and get lots of great ideas that could pretty much be run right out of the BGB.

I have it, though I haven't played it.  It's a pretty decent system - attributes and skills, roll high percentile (add relevant skill mod to d100 roll, beat a target number).  It's geared toward modern (and even includes a modern noir setting, Wellstone City, which I like quite a bit), but easy enough to hack.  I think there is a supplement in the works for various magic / power systems, but I haven't heard about progress in a while.
