  1. This just in my mail box...

"Chaosium's new official online forum is at basicroleplaying.org

BRP Central (basicroleplaying.org) is the new official online forum for Chaosium, company president Rick Meints announced today.

"Since day one the new Chaosium team has stated that one of our core commitments is to communicate better with our tribe: our Kickstarter backers, our creatives, our players, and our fans," said Meints. "We want to listen, get your feedback, and be a part of discussing all of our games with you, the people who make Chaosium what it is, and who want to help make it better than ever before."

Please note the forums at Glorantha.com will no longer remain active. Instead, BRP Central now features a dedicated Chaosium Family of Games section, with forums for Call of Cthulhu, Glorantha, RuneQuest Gateway, BRP, Magic World, and more!"

How 'bout that? Did someone here say "communication"? Well, it looks like someone may have heard ya :-). Trifletraxor, you been holdin' out on us?

Whatcha all think of that? I say it could be the start of something beautiful :)! Very cool.

    Cheers!

  2. So here's the deal for me...stiicking with the BGB as it lives on as PDF/POD will actually be pretty darn easy. But even though it won't be miserable and untenable, I'll always be a little sad that "my" BRP isn't the one that's getting the love. So don't expect me to be all sunshine and roses about everything that comes next. Just know that I won't feel compelled to rain on your parade. Deal?

    Word! And dead-bang on target!

  3. I think if we all express interest in a self-contained Southern Reaches setting (with the Magic World rules included of course) and this interest continues also after Chaosium have managed their more urgent priorities, then I think the chances of seeing more Southern Reaches/Magic World supplements are not that bad.

When you say, "...with the Magic World rules included..."  are you suggesting that such a supplement would have the whole rule set included or (considering the timbre of The Company's latest missives and its move to a slimmer and revised BRP rule set) a leaner set--a sort of MW Essentials?

    Cheers!

  4. My local gaming store is 'Dan's Books and Games' in Cobourg, Ontario...I run a fortnightly game that attracts about 9 people, none of whom had ever heard of RQ before, and 3 of whom had never role-played before. I've sold 4 copies of RQ through Dan's place, but that's really immaterial; every other week, 9 people turn up to game, have a great time...

A quest! A quest! Cobourg or bust! Who will join me!?

    ;-)

    Cheers!

  5. Word!

For polish, forethought, solid supplements and interesting settings, nothing beats RQ6 in my opinion! Unfortunately, it's just not the game for the tastes of my crew and considering wonderful publications like The Book of QuestsMonster Island, The Shores of Korantia, and Mythic Britain,--all of which I own--such a state of affairs makes me very sad.

Having consequently switched over to MW as a happy compromise, it makes The Co.’s present stance on MW even more poignant.

    Cheers!

  6. While we work on our detailed plans for how we support the "BRP" line of products going forward, please let me state that when we were talking about "BRP" in our initial statement...we did not omit Magic World on purpose. We were speaking about BRP in general.

...we intend to have Magic World, Advanced Sorcery, Enlightened Magic, and most other BRP titles all live on via drivethrurpg and lulu as POD and PDF...

If we have the rights to keep selling it, we will keep selling it as POD and PDF...

If we do not mention title X it is...not because we have declared it dead and never want it mentioned again.

...we are having to very carefully check each product to actually make sure we have the right to sell it...

    Hang in there.

Thanks for the communique, Rick. Please keep 'em comin'!

    Cheers!

  7. That's an interestingly appealing idea, Chaot.

In my campaign/game, I have an sub-economy centered around minor magic items. These items are embibed with specific spells of a specific level and only so many castings. They are usually tailor-made by an expert for an individual whose ability to "release" the spell is based on their natural POW. While my experts gave up a point of POW to embibe the item, for some reason I never thought about what the user who requested the talisman might need to contribute beyond the silver (or other services) to pay for it. I wonder why (hmmm. It must come from NOT GAMING ENOUGH!--eh? Oh!--sorry; that last just sorta slipped out)? I'm gonna have to look into that.

    Cheers!

  8. For me, considering that the same missive which announced a 32-page BRP Essentials and described it as the "...new core...rules..." is the same missive that relegated the BGB to POD or PDF (just what then exactly will the 'Essentials be essentials of and what's wrong with what we got?), all without so much as a mention of MW or its suppliments, it's rather simple: I don't trust the new Lunar Overlords to do anything beyond what they consider expedient, e.g. we're keeping BRP but we're letting its line editor go--thanks for all the fish.

Sorry Trippy, I know I sound bitter--and I am. Truly though, I am honestly glad there are those who, like yourself, still have faith in the company and their agenda. Mine is at such a low ebb that it wouldn't suprise me one bit if they offered a BRP Essentials based on...on...who knows what in their move toward unification.

    Cheers!

  9. Greetings all,

    I wonder...

About a year ago, as I was highlighting and annotating important things in my MW book for an approaching game,--back when the chance of GMing was a possibility in my neck of the woods--I was struck by how many ways there were to reach resolution: straight skill rolls, opposed rolls, combined skill rolls, the resistance table and characteristic rolls. Further, it seemed to me that I could almost forgo the resistance table with a judicious application of characteristic rolls and various multipliers (X5-X2), particularly if I employed BRP Difficulty Modifiers.

This thread got me wondering and, doing a little research, I noted that SB I, RQ II and RQ III do not have "characteristic rolls" as a mechanic (I cannot speak to Mongoose material having disposed of mine soon after receiving it--my icon is not Photoshopped). Could the resistance table almost be seen as but a layer in BRP's evolution that more robust mechanisms, like characteristic rolls and difficulty modifiers, supplanted? If that were the case, wouldn't it speak volumes to the awkwardness that some feel in RT use?

    What do you think?

    Cheers!

  10. Site News: have these last couple days been the busiest ever for these forums? Lots of interest in these systems!

It certainly has been...more so than in a long time. It reminds me of those halcilon days when the BGB was in the works, especially when the 'editing' copy was out (which had/has the abosolutely best cover IMHO) and we were poring over it. I hope the same will be remembered of Revolution's play test :-)

  11. Oh, wow!

Now that's a walk down amnesia lane! It had been such a desert of nothing before the rumor of a grand compendium was let slip. So exciting and then this cover, o_O; I was terrified it would be used. I hope we can look back at present days with similar wry fondness.

    Cheers!

  12. Though I play Magic World (and will bloody well continue to do so!), I voted BGB because to me it represents the broad palette of BRP core rules colors from which RQ2 & 3, RW, EQ, SB, E! MW, etc were painted--yes, yes, I understand that the BGB came after the games I mentioned; I was there for their advent! A BRP Essentials derived from that comprehensive tome, however, makes more sense to me. I don't want it reversed engineered into the mold of either CoC7 or RQ6, though the relationship is there, nor do I want it brought in line with Moon-Wisdom's Glorantha material.

    Cheers,

  13. Hmmm...

They've told us something, but have they really told us anything? They've dropped some names and titles and muddied the waters--we're certainly speculating here in this thread. Is that mission accomplished? I dunno. There's something odd about this blog-post. I'm not sure yet what it is...maybe it's the disappointment at no mention of MW or its promised supplements? Too, there's something odd about a BGB that is "...no longer necessary and will remain out of print", but an "Essentials" version that will be produced; as well as BRP products that will be developed based on "...new core BRP rules". The statement that these core rules are "...neither RuneQuest or Call of Cuthulhu" is comforting; indeed, I want BRP to remain its own entity but...is that what's being said here? If we have the BGB with all the rules therein, why do we need new ones? Is it simply to mock the trend? Curiouser and curiouser.

Too little, too late; too much, too early? The hand is faster than the eye? The blind are simply leading the blind? Have I been welcomed back into the family or told to shut the f#<k up? I'm gonna have to think on this...this..."development" before I decide.

In the meantime, I eagerly await Paolo and the Revolution while I mourn Magic World.

"We still live" said John Carter. Oh, yes; we still live.

    Cheers,

  14. I remember a lot of folk disregard the Fatigue rules in RQ3 as too much of a hassle to keep track of, and, honestly, it could take away from the cinematic/heroic end of things. I must say, however, as RQ was fashioned to simulate SCA combat, the fatigue rules did do a good job in that regard. I fought sword-and-board in that organization for ten years and can attest that though being turtled and unable to get up was spurious, the fact is all that padding, leather, metal and body heat wears a fella down! Three-four minutes at a time of constant shift, block and attack, in a harness that wieghed...maybe...35-45 pounds w/helm and add a shield...another 8-12 pounds, not to mention a 2-4 pound ratan "sword"... and you've to a recipe for serious weight loss! LOL.

    Cheers,
