"Easter tournament in 517"
Um, actually, in 515. 🙂

As for the time question, I slightly disagree with you. The ticking clock is there to heighten the tension that the PKs (and the Players) are feeling. They have a deadline. Sure, if they make choices to hurry along, then they save some time. But imagine the Players' faces when they leave the Faerie and in the next village find out that it is Sunday, not Tuesday, as they expected. That they have lost several days rather than just one. Playing such shenanigans not only makes the Faerie seem stranger and more dangerous, not something to be trifled with, while injecting urgency again. And as far as the Players are concerned (or certainly the PKs), had they not hurried before, then they would be too late now! So it does matter, within the story. Allowing the PKs to arrive before the duel even starts would make the ending somewhat anticlimactic, IMHO.

My preference would be to let the PK choices of hurrying and pressing their horses to matter so that when they tell their tale, if they lost any horses due to the forced march, Arthur would make good of their losses, and maybe even upgrade all of their horses while at it. Rewarding them for doing their utmost.

(Just to let people avoid spoilers.)
