  1. I am enjoying using RQ6 right now and I shall focus on that rule set for a year. But then I may switch to a BRP game, or an OQ game. The nice thing about d100 is that they're all close enough that you can switch easily, but I also find, and this is important, that they're a bit too close to run in parallel without getting confused.

I think this is the closest thing to the absolute truth in this thread.

If you know one BRP-game, you know them all. They all function more or less the same way, and produce more or less the same results when you play them. The details that differ between them might be devillish details, but details nontheless.

The only thing you need to know is what kind of details you want, and run with the game that suits. Once you've run a few games, you can start to mix and match.

  2. Some attributes matter more than others. A POW-roll of 18 will make any Call of Cthulhu-player tear up(with joyous tears). While a CHA/APP of 18 will probably make any player, regardless of BRP-subtype, groan audibly "Why, oh why couldn't I have rolled that one on an earlier stat?"

And that 18 will look very sweet when you roll on the Resistance Table. Which doesn't help you much if your playing new RQ, as the RT has gone the way of the dodo, but still.

I, like zomben, view attributes as the raw bones of a character. Some are, again, more boney than others. But together they generate a nice starting point.

  3. I myself would love to play in a BRP-ish TES pen-and-paper game. Those were the greatest games, Daggerfall being my favorite, followed by Morrowind (which I didn't really like the art for). Haven't played Oblivion or Skyrim though, old computer. <sigh>

I will leave this link to the The Design Mechanism-forums here. The UESRPG is worth keeping an eye on.

  4. Despite my lack of playing I have accumulated a gigantic stack of roleplaying books and an even larger stack of digital copies from RPG now, etc.

    Welcome.

You'll find an easygoing d100-presence on G+ as well. So if you're looking to use your big pile of books and flash drives, pop in there as well. You might be rolling up a character before you know it.

  5. Yes, this is pretty much "the place"for RuneQuest and the d100-family.

It may not be the fastest place, but it's a nice place. So if you have any questions, or just want to gab, this is where you want to do it.

    RuneQuest6 has it's own forum here: http://designmechanism.freeforums.org/

    Legend has the Mongoose-forums: http://forum.mongoosepublishing.com/viewforum.php?f=79&sid=207cfd0b3af53882c0614f4f7d662b10

    Old-school RuneQuest has Gringle's Pawnshop: http://gringlespawnshop.proboards.com/

Everything else and, to my delight, there's quite a bit, meets here.

And welcome to BRP Central, BryanMaloney!

  6. I suspect many of us old fans will soon be Old School BRPers as well by the looks...

If you check your passport, you'll find it stamped with "grognard" from the minute you clocked in on this forum.

I do share your(and other's sentiments) on the CoC7. Some of it is cool. Other things are not. Not even in the slightest.

  7. I'm getting far too old :(

    Aren't we all?;)

But you have the basic gist of it. Reddit is a place where one can put up general posts and tidbits found on the web, discuss them, and, in the case of the young subs /r/RuneQuest, /r/BRP and /r/Glorantha, hopefully drum up some interest.

  8. My only thing about RQ6 - is it more like Ancient Greece, or just generic fantasy? Definitely looking for the beasties to be classic fantasy since I'll be writing my own story.

It's generic, but the tone and feel throughout the book evokes that classical feel, as the example characters and setting used to illustrate the rules are more or less fantasy-ancient Greece.

  9. RuneQuest6 should be crunchy enough to satisfy most of your players, I think.

BRP(The Gold Book) can be as crunchy as you like, although I'd recommend the medium setting - the same level of complexity you'll find in MagicWorld and old Stormbringer.

Basic Creatures is ..not as nice as it could be. It's basicly the unillustrated bestiary of RQ3 slapped into monograph form.

RQ6 has a massive bestiary, combine it with Monster Island and you'll have more ways of terrorizing your players than you would think possible.

MagicWorld comes ready to play with a bestiary.

The coreBRP-book has some monsters in it. Enough to get you started, but you'll probably want to get some setting books to fill it out.

  10. are all the books compatible?

Yes, they are. Minor tweaking at worst.

In other words, if I get RQ6 and want more spells, can I just buy Magic World and integrate it into my campaign?

You could, although I can't see that you really need to.

And welcome to BRP Central, MartianSpider

  11. You can have sidekicks, but that was perhaps not what you were looking for.

There are no rules for followers(that I'm aware of). I'm wondering, though..what attracts these followers?

Pure charismatic force? Social standing? The promise of treasure or some secret technique? Weekly paycheck?

  12. The way RQ6 works is that you are more likely to be 'defeated' than killed outright.

I feel that this is the one, major difference between RQ and BRP.

With BRP the decicion is whether to fight or not to fight. RQ also presents this dilemma, but adds two additional ones: how to fight and what to do with your surrendered/hamstrung/comatose opponent to a much higher degree than core BRP.
