  1. Oh I see, it seems the appendix was dropped from Mythras then? It's hard to say how the alternate movement affects combat, as there are quite few new combat special effects that I am not familiar with yet.

I am beginning to see some interesting differences to Legend/RQII as I read on Mythras. And some quite obvious ones, like 'heroic abilities' have been dropped out, and luck points work a bit differently in that they seem to regenerate for the next game session? I think I'd like to retain heroic abilities for my pirate campaign at least. But for CF campaign they might not be required since you get a load of professional traits and whatnot for the characters anyways.

  2. I just got my hands on Mythras rulebook, and having read CF FIRST, I was struck how different approaches these two books take on movement? CF drops Move altogether as an independent combat action, and instead includes certain 'gaits' to each combat action, so you can move little or lot depending which one you choose.

Mythras, on the other hand, seems to take fairly minimalistic and traditional approach to movement, it's very light on rules at this point, I feel. I was kinda surprised at this after reading CF, and I am curious about these two variant approaches. Did you Rod end up with this new system of moving due to the miniature gaming aspect of your rules, or did you just want to handle Movement differently? I am not really sure which way I will adopt, I am kinda used to the separate action method from RQII/Legend, but on the other hand, the CF one seems interesting, and it might make you feel like movement was happening at the same time as other actions, as it does in real life? But I'd have to test in a game or two. Maybe even discuss this with my players...

  3. Ok, in answer to myself, Paypal becomes available in the payment stage, it's just not listed in the payment card icons (which would be clearer).

Also, postage to Finland was £2 - order made!

  4. Odd, because Paypal is not listed as payment method when in checkout? It only asks your card details?

AND European delivery is still listed free... are we talking about the same site?

  5. About the deck, is one sufficient for the entire group (in my case 4 players & GM), or do you need more?

And it would seem more practical to give them to players only, the GM can/should keep books on paper, right?

    Hi Loz,

As a UK resident I've just ordered the hardbacks of Classic Fantasy and Mythras from Aeon Games.

Do you know how I will be getting the PDFs ? I've only had an email confirmation from Aeon about the hardbacks but no mention of PDFs.

And a side question... any timescale on a print version of Mythic Britain ?

I think it seems the pdf+print copy deal is only from Design Mechanism? I am interested in ordering from Aeon too, as they offer free postage, but I might order from DM, if it's the only way to get the pdf for the same price... and maybe the cards too.

    And yay for Mythic Rome!

  7. Alright, thanks again Rod. I thought there must be some utility the schools have, but couldn't figure out what it was.

By original source material I take you refer to the original D&D rules? Unfortunately, I don't have access to those, I only have D&D 3.5 rulebook to look at. I realise that wasnt' your inspiration for CF, but looking at the domain in there, I notice that there's at least partial overlap. For example domains like plant, animal, and protection exist in both CF and 3.5, and then there might be some some that are similar but under different title (maybe like Divination vs. Knowledge?), or split into several (like Elemental vs, Fire, Water, Earth & Air). But then there seem to be some that exist in 3.5 only, such as Good, Evil, Chaos, Death, Necromantic etc.

So if I want' to emulate D&D 3.5 or other D20 rules, I could come up with new domains. That isn't too hard, the only issue I see is converting the spells. Depending on individual spell, some seem to convert easily, some need more thinking. I guess the problem is figuring out the correct Intensity and appropriate level of each spell? How would you say do CF ranks and D20 levels match, roughly? What about spell levels?

    Hi Verderer,

In 1st and 2nd edition AD&D, due to their nature, gnomes were mostly naturally adept at illusion magics. At least those that chose to cast spells. There really is no game balance reason why they cannot be normal magic-users however. As I state in several parts of the book, simply ignore any class/racial restrictions that don't fit your game. They just set up the frame work for the official material.

I see no reason why dwarven runesmiths would conflict with dwarves not being magic-users. Rune magic, like divine magic, is a different kind of magic. And dwarves do make magic items of course. So I have already made plans for dwarven runesmiths to become a part of Classic Fantasy down the road. However, it will just require quite a few pages to write up the class, rune enchantment rules, and descriptions of all the individual runes. Due to the limited page count, and that it wasn't a core class of the dwarves, it wasn't essential for the core book. It will make it in Unearthed Companion.

There should be no reason why lawful and chaotic couldn't fit in with all of the alignment passions. I may include that as an option in the Companion anyway as I have been thinking about it myself.

The Mythras rules should be in print really soon as far as I know. I believe the two books were to come out relatively close to each other. However Lawrence would know that more than I.

    Thanks for the questions,

    Rod

Excellent, thanks Rod! I am really looking forward to the companion.

And thanks Mankcam & Falconer, I already have downloaded Imperative, but I decided I definitely want Mythras too, so as soon as it is released, I will get me one print version.

  9. Having now read a bits of the book, I have a couple of comments & queries, if I may?

Firstly, does anyone know/remember how it came about that Gnomes can only be illusionist magic users? Game balance? It's a small thing (with gnomes it would be, snigger), but it annoys me for some reason. I would say they''re just natural illusionists, but other kinds of MU exist? :)

With dwarves, I can understand that they cannot be magic users, but even then I'd kinda want something like runesmiths... but I understand that the tradition balance doesn't allow this and the classes/professions are limited to the main types.

About passions, I noticed that the trait 'lawful' and 'chaotic' appear listed on good and evil passions, respectively. Rod, how would you feel about allowing lawful and chaotic as traits in both good, evil, and neutral passions? Would that be in accordance with the passions system, I am not too familiar with it? I am thinking this would allow to similate alignments like 'lawful evil' or 'chaotic good' etc? Would these make sense within the passion framework?

Reading the combat rules I was suprised how movement had been changed from RQII/Legend, I think this does go a long to way to sort some issues in those systems with charge etc? So it's a kinda simultaneous thing with other actions. Makes sense. This also showed me it's imperative (hem) to get the full Mythras rules...

Is there a Mythras rulebook in print by the way, I could only find RQ6 on DM online store? Are the two indentical except in name?

  10. That's not a bad idea, Rod. Although our group has played RQ II / Legend before, so the rudiments of the system are fairly familiar, I guess.

I'd better order the MRB in any case, just to be sure I have everything I need.

Later on when I get to reading CF properly, I'd probably pick your brain and the collective community brain about how to use d20/Pathfinder material with it. Things like sorcerers, encounter levels and so on.

  11. Can I ask, do you need the full Mythras rulebook for Classic Fantasy to run it as the GM, or would Mythras Imperative be enough? I am sorry but I am very bad at reading PDFs, so all I have done so far is a bit skimming. I know there are references to the MRB at least, in character creation for one?

I will probably purchase Mythras as well, just to get the complete system, so it's not a big issue for me in any case.
