  1. This coming Saturday- 30th November, the Newport Centre is hosting Dragondaze, a convention celebrating gaming, comics and other bits of geek culture for local charities. My friend John, a fine GM, is running the "Caves of Circind" Mythic Britain scenario. The convention runs from 10-5 and the session will run from 1 to 5 .

So, if you're in the area, feel free to join the game.

  2. It went well. Two old hands at my table- but hadn't played RQ in a long, long time or visited Glorantha for that time either. Three newbies to both BRP based games and Glorantha- 2 student aged folks with only D&D and Star Wars experience and the other player is in my Feng Shui game and likes more narrative games generally.

So all the players enjoyed themselves. Glorantha sold itself very well- magic rich bronze age went down well as an alternative to medieval "wild west" default. Lethality of combat was also appreciated- especially after the encounter with the rock lizards was not quite a piece of cake. There was much laughter with the one critical hit of the game i, when Idrima was crushing one player- the attacking PC rolled chest for the hit location- where Idrima was crushing the PC, so they killed in spectacular fashion one of the group. Much laughter.

There were a few fumbles, which added to the feeling of lethality.  There was some good use of Rune Magic to aid the party.

Generally, the 2 old hands are both artists so they really liked the quality of the art.

I brought along the 13th Age Kickstarter maps which I had laminated at A3 size- that really helped sell the setting, and also give a feel of how far some of the PCs had travelled in their backstory. I also used the playtest rules at times.

The adventure was easy to run, but not generic. Something to consider for the future- some PDF "show-mes" of the art/ untagged map to help GMs show to the players without possibly spoiling plot points.

  3. With the exception of my friend John running 7th Sea, I have no idea what other tables were running. My mind was elsewhere.....

I had a good day, the adventure was simple enough as an introduction and distinct enough to give a feeling of the Gloranthan difference.

  4. Next Saturday- 17th June, Tony Parry and I will be running two tables of the Runequest quickstart, hosted by Cardiff's FLGS Rules of Play. So we'll be able to accommodate up to 10 players. Details on time and venue will follow, as it won't be held at the store itself- there's a card event going on which brings in "real money". So the Runequest loving owner is looking for a  suitable venue to hire. Once we have that, I'll let you know the arrangements.

I know we have a fair few people who'd love to try to new edition out in South Wales, hopefully we'll see you on the day.

  5. Lhankor Mhy have a wider role than an equivalent to CoC's librarian or even Indiana Jones. They can be librarians or historians or archelogists or war poets/ artists or tactical advisors for war or spies or documentarians in world of limited literacy or mystical oracles - see the HQ feat for the cult (very Lightbringerish). You can also see them as the Law and law maker or the squalid thief. They could be obsessed with dragonewts and the EWF or with the undead (and end up as an necromancer?). They're closer to Timbuktu 's libraries than your local libraries...

Oh, how I long to play a Wild Sage again.....

  7. The Guide to Glorantha and the upcoming Glorantha Source book are stat free, and can be used with Runequest/ Heroquest/ 13th Age/ what ever gaming system you're hacking to play with Glorantha. These reflect current canon- but no-one expects you and your gaming group to stick to canon at the gaming table.

  8. For me, Heroquest encourages players to think that the most mythic solution is the best solution to a problem. However, the Coming Storm makes a compelling case for lower powered campaigns- I also think that book is very adaptable to Runequest.

I'm also ruminating on an Ars Magica/ Heroquest hack for Grand Tribunal in August.

  9. Lots of food for thought here. I'll also have a look through my photos of Sri Lankan temples for some inspiration. But some re-reading of works will be required to start stitching stuff together to make "Gloranthan sense" and dramatic sense.
