  1. Sounds good. Would love to see what you produce.

I've been hand writing mine out while going through the book. Also been writing out some magic spells as well as drafting out my campaign world, as well as drawing maps, and all that other fun stuff. Doing too many things at one....definitely a problem I have. :)

When I type out the cheat sheet, I'll post it up and leave it open for review.

  2. EXACTLY! Brilliant observation. I, and the people I play with, have been playing the same game for like 15 years, so when picking up BRP and trying to learn it and thinking about how to teach other players to play it, a cheat sheet would absolutely not only help the GM but also the players. I didn't even think of that aspect.

I'm going to try to do some of it and post it up. See what people think.

  3. Checked out the princeton con, that looks really cool. Cool concept too.

I hear you Chaot, things have been really hectic here too. The only time I actually remember and consider the con is when I visit the forums. Otherwise else, it's just work, hating work, work, despising work, work, trying to figure out how to set the place on fire so I don't have to work there anymore, work, work, work...

I'm still seeing about keeping my options open with going. Hell, it's close enough where maybe I'll just go for a day and check it out.

  4. Hey all

    Second Topic

    :)

Just curious if anyone created one, and if it helped them. When looking through the BRP (still trying to get all the nuances of the system down), I found that there are lots of little things. And while I know that it's not necessary to memorize all the little things in ANY rulebook, I was wondering if they found that jotting down notes helped keep their minds refreshed when reading other sections or when playing and rules questions came up.

Just curious about whether anyone did one, or if they would like to see one. Because I'm seriously considering doing one for me. I know that GM Screens are similar in idea, but I'm thinking of something more than just charts. Well...it will be charts, but more for the smaller nuances that can matter in play.

    Something like this:

    MOVE in Combat Round

0-5 meters + attack = no penalty to DEX Ranks

    6-15 meters + attack = 1/2 DEX Rank

    16-29 meters + attack = 1/4 DEX Rank

30 meters = no other action possible

Attacks = full skill rating; each extra attack at -30% and -5 DEX Ranks

Parry* = 100% skill rating, each subsequent at -30% on skill rating

Dodge* = 100% skill rating, each subsequent at -30% on skill rating

    * Note that parries and doges cannot be combined in same Combat Round.

    Thoughts?

  5. This is really great advice. Thanks man.

I was thinking of making something where it had a combination of three different sources for different types of Powers in my campaign world.

Using Magic for common spells, attack/defense things like that, spellsongs, mystical spells, and the majority of other various types of castings, etc.

    Psychic for innate magical powers

Sorcery (as a misnomer in this case) for things like conjuration, the summoning and ritual aspects of ecclesiastical rites/rituals/ceremonies, necromancer constructions/summonings, sorcery summonings, elementalist summonings, seances for spirit mediums, etc.

I like the skill aspect of the magic system, but I like the way that ritualistic things, when done properly have a very little chance of failing with Sorcery.

Don't know if I'm making sense though. I'm kinda tired. :o

  6. I would dearly love a supplement that included Demon Summoning from Elric! and Corum; Contrivances, Elemental Tattoos, Fetishes and Chaotic Melds from Corum; the Virtues system from Gods of Law; the freeform Sorcery from Unknown East; the odds and ends from Bronze Grimoire; Ki skills from Land of Ninja; the ritual magic and summoning system from both Nephilim and Liber Ka; and Sorcery/Divine/Shamanism from RQ3. Get them all down in one book written with an eye to the style of the BGB.

    ;-D

you are talking my language brother. I personally love giant encyclopedic compendiums of just stuff that give you anything and everything that you as a GM could want in a game system. The more it hurts your back to carry around the better! Although having a pandigital eReader and a bunch of pdfs severely saves my back. ;)

I also love unorthodox castings and powers, like spellsinging, divination, mystical-based, and all that. Sure, having a wizard shoot lighting out of his arse is great, but I personally like the flair of other alterna spells and powers.

  7. Thanks for all the responces, they helped a lot.

Once I started seeing them as different systems altogether it seems to make more sense to me.

Right now I'm on my 2nd read-though of the Gold book. Hopefully the 2nd read through will add some more insight into the system on a whole. From my first readthrough I really liked what I read.

What I was thinking of doing for my games is having there be some skill pre-requisites for spell casting abilities. I like the spell/skill rules set for fantasy games. Figure it's a good balance of only having so many spells to start and that you get better the more you use certain spells.

Aside from Basic Magic, are there any rumors or stirrings of them making a Power Compendium for BRP? I know I answered that in the poll introduced in another thread. That and a super Beast Compendium. ;D

  8. Hello All:

First Post of my own ;t)

Okay. This is just a question on how the BRP Gold is organized and categorized. Maybe I'm just not wrapping my mind around it. Maybe, it's too many rpgs fighting for comparison and dominance... who knows.

I guess what I'm curious about is the opinions of those that played the game as to how they feel the magic/power system works and how they view it.

In the BRP they have the

    Magic Powers: Like Spell/Skills

Psychic: Kinda like Psionics or Psychogenics

Sorcery: Seems like ritual and spirit based magic

    Mutations: Powers of the mind/body

    Superpowers: Powers of the mind/body/spirit

The Basic Magic adds the Divine Magic Category.

In games like D&D they separated it into the class-based magic: Cleric, Druid, Magic-User, Illusionist and the other classes took from those 4 basic categories for their spell-choices.

White-Wolf divided it into Spheres and Sphere-Combinations.

Rifts had different Schools of magic based on the OCC that you chose.

DJ had different skills that allowed you to cast spells, and divided it into separate skills that you had to purchase. But there were lots of spells per that one skill that you could choose from, i.e., if you had Sorcery there were like 50 castings for that skill and you could choose like 20 or something to start with and all spell checks were done by the skill rating for the overall skill.

I guess what I'm curious is how you guys would categorize the different systems and what it would encompass.

For instance, would you categorize Necromancy into a Sorcery type category or would you make it a Magic type thing? Would it be considered a Divine Magic category if you are dealing with a god/goddess of death and the underworld (although necromancy would not really fit into the premise of most god/goddesses of the underworld and death).

I'm just curious because I like different magic systems and want to incorporate them into my games, but don't (as of yet) really know where to begin and how to begin in thinking about them.

Thanks for the help and discussion.

Don't be too harsh...I'm still super green to this system. :)

  9. Looks cool.

Can't offer any comment on the actual mechanics of the sheet since I don't know the system. But I guess the one thing is what you or others want out of a character sheet. I personally like multiple page ones with a lot of room and detail in it. For me it reduces the need to flip through the book when I need to do or change something. Some people like just having everything on one page so it's all there in front of them. But like you said since it's for a pbp game, it probably isn't necessary to make multiple pages and just give the essential nuts and bolts in a simple format.

Like the font on the headers. Which one is it?

  10. Thanks for posting that Mysterioso, I'll talk it over with my lady and see if we can go. Either that, or she'll roll her eyes and have me go by myself with a footprint on my ass. ;D

If there is a presence of BRP, I'll gladly join in, no matter who is running it. Can't wait to try the system out.

  11. Howdy neighbor! We should talk. :)

I've been mulling it over Mysterioso, and I'm thinking about calling one or two people out here and seeing if I can't get a small group together to do at least one day of the con.

    Sounds good. :)

If you're doing a game, I'll definitely try and make it.

If it's a small con, that would be good too. The last Con I was at was the NYCC. It was packed, and kinda terrifying. Played the Ravenloft Boardgame (dissapointing. Reminded me of a bad version of Arkham Horror. Arkham Horror rocks though, and Ravenloft was quite forgettable.) Got to meet J. Michael Straczynski (which was awesome). But I think I would like the smaller cons better.

  12. I'm from Staten Island too.

I was thinking of checking this con out if there are people going to be playing BRP. Been trying to learn the rules myself, being quite green to the game, and nothing facilitates learning faster than experience.

Let me know if there is any word about BRP being played here.
