  1. Get off my lawn!

Just kidding. I've been gaming since the late 70's, and I'll be honest, I don't really like gaming with most of the "old guard." It's a hobby that is supposed to be fun, and many of them seem to have forgotten that.

On topic, I can't wait till this hits retail stores. Got mine pre-ordered from a site I had credit with (and also had it much cheaper.) I still own the original Ye Booke of Monsters and always really enjoyed them. I suspect these will be even better/more. Also looking forward to the advice for making your own Mythos. I've had an idea for a Mythos being for years and years, and am finally going to put it down on paper.

  2. For further clarity, if I understand the rules properly, the 50% rule is only used when an NPC skill is opposed to the PC's skill, but not rolled. In opposed skills that are rolled, the 50% rule doesn't apply and the level of success is what determines who "wins."

Lt. Gordon Persuade skill = 70%, Commissioner Loeb Psychology skill 55%

Gordon tries to persuade Loeb that he is actively hunting the Batman. Gordon needs a Hard success (35%) because Loeb's Psychology is above 50% and Gordon is the only one rolling dice.

If for some reason Loeb actively rolls opposition instead: Both roll their skill levels (70% vs 55%) and the better level of success succeeds. The 50% rule is not used because Loeb actively rolled his skill.

  3. I think I might just go with wherever feels right at the time then. I know Bonus Dice per RAW don't apply to Sanity, but I might offer that at times as a middle ground.

There is also the "getting used to awfulness" rules, but tracking the total Sanity lost from every PC for every single thing they have seen quickly becomes a pain.

  4. Quick question for Keepers out there.

How often do PC's need to make Sanity checks for the same thing?

Say they go in an attic and a skull floats at them. They make Sanity Checks and run away. They later return, and the skull floats at them again. Do they make Sanity Checks again even though they have seen the skull?

I've run CoC on and off since the 80's, but I've never really been sure when to make repeated Sanity Checks. I've often had players be like "but we KNOW the skull floats now, so we are ready for it.", to which I don't usually have an answer.

  5. I'm running The Haunting for my group and we didn't finish it in one session due to a lot of role-playing and investigating. Now I'm thinking about expanding it for the second session. One question:

Is the Illuminati type symbol that's found at the church tied to any known mythos? Or is it something new for the scenario?

(Sorry, if there is a way to add spoiler text I'm not seeing it on my phone.)

  6. I was playing Delta Green before I decided to switch back to Call of Cthulhu. I do like the "home" scenes mechanics, but I think I like the "self help" mechanics from 7e better. They are basically the same; I just really like what 7e is doing with "backgrounds."

  7. I always really enjoy when a game gives some advice or structure for downtime, because I always hate just skipping over it. (At the same time, I don't like it to take up TOO much time)

It's a very good point that power creep isn't really a worry here. Fun is far more important, and allowing more downtime activities allows more chances for creepy encounters.

  8. For downtime activities, like spending time with a background element, do you generally allow only one of those between adventures?

I'm thinking maybe one per month of downtime or something.

  9. What's the weirdest or dumbest campaign you have run using Call of Cthulhu?

I ran a "Tales of the Gold Monkey" campaign based on the tv show in the way back times with 1st edition. (That campaign would probably work great today with Pulp Cthulhu)

I still have the stupid erase marks on my original map where I drew in the campaign area like an idiot.
