  1. Greetings, I was just curious about you, the people here. You see I know that BRP games, Runequest, Call of Cthulhu mythos,  Pendragon, Nephilim ect. games are based on mythology &  history. I am curious what the people involved as either players or designers and creators backgrounds are in mythology? Did you have any books in particular that set you down the path to mythology and Chaosium Inc. as well, or any that you have found that really were beacons for you? I'm just curious because there is a lot of conversation about gaming with some side talk and references to mythology. It would just be an interesting insight for me and I am curious about you, fellow Tabletop Game's and mythology fans. Your thoughts are appreciated, regards, Victor.

  2. I love my big beautiful volumes of the Guide to Glorantha. That said I would love to have ten more Runequest books on my shelf, and it will be easier to go to the specific book I am looking for. I've been most excited about the Cults and Gods of Glorantha and am really excited for more content, and the more information and more pages provided, the more I am excited. I love how fully fleshed out Glorantha is as a world and the artwork that has been put together for RQG really brings it to life and I can't wait to see what Chaosium has laid out, I'm sure it will be brilliant.

A question, if I may. Is this a solo campaign or are you playing Vishi in a regular game?

If it's the former, I have an interesting suggestion. If it's the latter, that suggestion really should go to your referee 🙂

The llama spirit is a great idea and I like @Darius West's suggestion as well. Vishi's alticamelus represents better than 75% of his wealth [the equivalent of taking all of a warrior's armor] and unless there is a definite plot hook [the scripted capture of the whole party, for example] where everyone suffers a huge loss, it ought to be replaced.

I am the GM, and Vishi is one of my players. We are cunning the starter set adventures.

That's a potentially really cool idea. Especially if he had a crystal or something the high llama's spirit could be bound to - so they could continue to be partners. The spirit combat bit could simply be a representation of Vishi trying to talk his mount into sticking around awhile longer (calling it to him), while the high llama itself is torn between returning to its master/rider and heading off to great green pastures of the afterlife. Discorporation, while meditating near the site of the high llama's death should do the trick. If it's been too long, Vishi might have to stack Extension on the Discorp spell in order to have adequate time to track the llama's spirit down in the spirit world.

Those are some great ideas and good instruction, I appreciate it, thank you Beoferret.  Even though I've read about the Spirit World, I have yet to run any spirit world stuff yet so I've been a little bit nervous about it. I do feel because he is a shaman it seems rather appropriate though, especially at the beginning of the game to use this as an opportunity to help him understand his character and how to play him better and how he interacts with spirits and the spirit world. So, if he talks his mount into sticking around to him a while longer, how could I use him as a spiritual entity to help him in the game? Could he assist him in Spirit Combat then? I could possibly keep the high llama in the spirit form without his head, it could be a sort of "Headless Horseman/ but the Llama is without a head sort of deal. Unless in spirit form it would be back to it's complete self. Any way, it would be interesting, knowing death is not the end in this game in a way. Thanks, cheers:) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nf5Y94tw30E

  5. Our 5th session in and my player playing Vishi was missing pretty much every roll, then he drops to zero hp. Fortunately another player was able to heal him some. Then his high llama got decapitated. Needless to say I think my player was feeling rather discouraged. That was near the end of the session., any recommendations for my next session? I thought maybe Vishi could meet with his high llama in the spirit world. Any recommendations or ideas of how I could make this interesting so maybe my player will feel encouraged? Thank you.

As a new GM to BRP-style systems, I originally bounced off RuneQuest Glorantha in 2018 because of the errata and confusing mix of RQ2/3/G language.

I thankfully came to my senses and it's my go-to system since 2020. My homemade Notion reference, the starter set and subsequent wiki are my favourite sources for rules now.

I would shell out for a Leatherette edition of the rulebook if it was updated. That would be amazing!

Me too, I love the leatherettes. So pretty on my shelf.

Something I've been doing for the past couple years now -- start a game world calendar, track the actual passage of time within the game framework. It takes a bit of work, sometimes you have to make adjustments to the scenarios to fit within the framework, but for players that get attached to their characters it works quite well. It allows players to change characters for a scenario or two so that their primary can rest, recuperate, regain some sanity...

If you plan to run Masks of Nyarlathotep, don't forget there is a four year gap between the prologue in Peru and the main campaign. Running one-shots in between lets your players beef up for the main campaign, and you can then not pull any punches with a clear conscience...

    Great tips, thank you Aerinyes.

As is well known, Chaosium (Greg, Sandy, and Lynn) designed West End Games' Ghostbusters RPG, which pioneered d6 dice pool mechanics later used in such games as the Star Wars RPG. But Chaosium never owned the licensing rights to Ghostbusters, and doesn't own them now.

I'm so glad you ended up getting some relieving feedback!

Communication at the table is one of the hardest things. It really requires us to be vulnerable. I work really hard to assure my players that I'm not going to get offended if they don't like something because I want to grow.

Let us know if we can help you select the next product that is right for you!

Thank you Klescer, I appreciate your feedback. I think my biggest problem is second guessing myself. I just bought the new 40th Anniversary Keeper Rulebook and the Keeper Tips book which I have started and it's really inspiring. I have some money coming soon and plan on getting a bunch of Call of Cthulhu Books. I'm trying to decide though, I want to get either: Gateways to Terror, Dead Lights, Doors to Darkness, or some other tome with some short scenarios (1-3 sessions) to lead into Masks of Nyarlethotep. I might also get something else in between before jumping into something so big. Amy advice would be appreciated, thank you.

  9. Back in May I ran the "Edge of Darkness" scenario and at the time, the final showdown in the farmhouse felt to me like a total bomb. Nobody was saying anything and I kept rolling really bad when rolling for how much sanity was lost. I could only ever seem to roll 1-3 and so I couldn't make anybody run out of the house and I tried throwing a racoon down from the attic, but it didn't last long enough. I certainly should have gone harder as a Keeper, but tonight my players told me they loved it and my player Larry said he was genuinely terrified. They were just really tired because they stayed up too late the night before and one of them was really hungover. I feel re-validated in my ability to be a Keeper:) I'm excited to soon buy some more Call of Cthulhu stuff!

  10. To Whom it May Concern,

I was just wondering as being it has been over 25 years since the Original "Ghostbusters™  A Frightfully Cheerful Roleplaying Game" was released, and a Fifth Movie sequel has been announced. Has there been any talk of a new Ghostbusters TTRPG being made? West End Games was declared bankrupt in 1998, but I don't know if Nocturnal Media now has rights to it. I also realize that Chaosium is quite busy. I've always been a big fan of the Ghostbusters and the TTRPG game is unique in that it's from 1986 and you can still find people playing it on Youtube. Ghostbusters: Afterlife did do alright in the Box Office but it was right in the middle of COVID, so I'm sure that effected the numbers, but I also know it didn't do great overseas. Anyway, not really expecting anything to come of this post, just pondering how a Ghostbusters game would be really cool and I couldn't find a modern incarnation & was just was curious what people would have to say about this. Salutations, Zulfikar Zaban

Face to Face (if I ever get there again) - battle mat and tokens or miniatures. I have a bunch of the D&D plastic miniatures that I can use (even got some "broos" back when I was buying them... 🙂 )

Online - Roll20 with maps and tokens.

Cool bit about online. For my Thieves Guild campaign, I took the 11"x17" 50' to the inch map of Sontra from Columbia Games Streets of Gems and resized my hexes so I have 1 meter hexes on it for RQ... With 1" hexes that would be a 15' long map for face to face play...  There ARE some real advantages to virtual table top...

Ha, nice. I have definitely become a lot more tech savvy since covid. I have learned to make maps with sketchbook pro and have created paintbrushes for maps to create random sized mountains for mountain ranges and trees for forests, and pretty much whatever and I can use real mountains and trees as the images. I really quite enjoy it.

"I second owl bear rodeo for online play. It's free, easy to upload your own maps and tokens, easy to share with your players. Our lockdown play was  theatre of the mind, but using an online map and tokens really helped clarify the situation. At table I'll tend to draw the scene out (or have it pre-prepped) on a piece of paper and we use that with home-made standees or tokens as a rough guide of what's going on. Occasionally the battle map or a gridded print map comes out, but it's rare we're that pedantic about combat."

Cool, thank you. That's helpful, and it's good to know Owlbear worked well for you and online play. I like TOTM for much of gameplay, but maps can definitely be helpful for combat. My players have expressed the same, they like a mix, especially in larger combats.

  13. Greetings fellow gamers,

I'm just curious, I haven't played much BRP, just a little Runequest and the solo adventure of Call of Cthulhu. When I played Runequest it was with a veteran gamemaster and we did use some maps and tokens, but I didn't know how you all approached the game, especially playing online, and what do you use for audio and for maps and tokens? Also, where do you get your maps and tokens for online if you use them? I personally like to use Discord for audio in other games I play, and have played on Roll20, and Fantasy Grounds, but personally prefer Owlbear Rodeo for it's simplicity and I think it helps lessen the confusion of trying to understand the ins-and-outs of an online platform on top of trying to educate new players on how to play with the rule system of a TTRPG.  I'm just curious how other people approach this, that is all, thank you.

Im starting Company of the Dragon. Reach out to me over private message.

I actually got invited into a Runequest game already and should have erased my OP. Thank you for the offer though.

This very feature of the game has also, I think, proven a challenge for many players.  As I've stated elsewhere, it's no fewer than three, maybe four, different game concepts gathered under one cover.  Then any given Past Life era potentially presents an entirely different historical setting if you engage in flashback play.  I wholeheartedly agree that the game opens the pathway to -- almost necessitates -- personal research into world history, world religion, occult science and mysticism, conspiracy theory, current world affairs.  It can be a daunting project to keep a lid on, and a steep price for admission.  Imagine playing Call of Cthulhu sequentially or simultaneously in all of the published eras and genres, including the Dreamlands and Delta Green.  It'd be wild!

So how do prospective GMs wrap their arms around Nephilim?  How do you keep that lid on to successfully bring it to a boil, but not blow out of control?  What scope do you use to keep it in focus?  What tools and GM/player resources do you want to see to make the game work as a game, and not just a research project?

As a matter of fact I will be looking for 2 to 4 players (newcomers, please as I am running old classic games) for a 6 week session. One or two games with one episode zero to meet and decide which direction we want our one/two shot game to go. I intend to use pregens from the RQ RiG book seeing as it is such a chore to roll new ones and we are only playing one or two scenarios.

Perfect! Thanks Bill the Barbarian. If you want, I'm sure I could find some other players if you can't find anybody. Just for a heads up, I have games on Friday and Sunday nights, other than that, I'm very flexible.

No worries, really.  Most of these ideas have been a quarter-century in the making, so I reckon you have at least a decade to respond in a timely fashion. 🙂

    Thank you, lol, good point.

  18. I really dropped the ball in this thread and didn't realize I got so many replies, and Then I was overwhelmed and not sure how to respond to them all. You guys definitely have allot of compelling ideas & thoughts and I'll try to respond to some of them individually. Thank you and sorry for not following up alot sooner.

  19. I know in another post the moderators confirmed that they were having trouble getting Runequest up on Roll20, something about the Roll20 staff being really busy and haven't been able to do it yet, or something along those lines. What I'm wondering is with the starter set coming out is there any plans to get it up on Roll20? It would certainly help boost it's promotion and sale. Just wondering, thank you. The Starter Set looks beautiful.
