There's definitely two thoughts to this.  I firmly fall into the party of 'it's all BRP, doesn't matter what it was called to begin with.'  Runequest and Ring World and River of Heaven and Stormbringer 1st and Elf Quest and all that other stuff are flavors of BRP.  RuneQuest is not Elf Quest is not Stormbringer but all of them are BRP.

    I have come to understand that this is not universally accepted but it's how I process the whole thing.

  2. A nice trade off is that the character buying the enchantment doesn't necessarily have a lot of POW.  Buying an enchantment gives them an advantage in general but leaves them more susceptible to magic (due to lowered POW) and with a less successful Luck roll.

    I also tend to make PCs spend the mp that they would need to to activate an enchanted item.  So if you have a PC with 12 POW buy a 'Hell's Sharp Razor (or whatever) at 4mp the PC's POW goes down to 8.  They now have 8mp in the day to activate Hell's Sharp Whatever.

  3. Great thread.  Love the implications.

    I've run where an enchantment can be placed at a single point of POW by the caster so long as a willing individual pays the full enchantment cost as well.  I just equated MP to POW.  So somebody putting a 4mp spell on a sword, say, would lose 4POW while the enchanter only loses 1Pow.  If multiple spells are placed at the same time, I only charged the enchanter 1 point of POW while the recipient payed the full cost of MP in POW.  A 4mp spell  combined with a 3mp spell would cost the buyer 7Pow.  Leads to lots of magic weapons, which is not a bad thing in my book.

    That being said, the suggestions in this thread are much more colorful.

  4. I chose MW. Not because I necessarily prefer it over the BGB, but because its core system is already pared down somewhat. Pull out the Monsters, and some of the GM advice, and other bits and you have a core of whats in the BGB. I would then expect though a "BRP Companion", which would contain all the other bits, bobs, and subsystems from the BGB.

    I voted the same for much the same reasons.

  5. I just downloaded it to give it a look. Seems like it could be the core of a BRP OSR effort...

     

    GORE is great.  It's been a while since I've read it but I think it hews pretty close to the Elric! ruleset, which is easily my preferred poison.

I'm not Nakana so I obviously can't call the rules here.  Personally, I'm keeping an eye on what's done (the excellent work of Dave the DM) while doing what I want.  Right now I'm brewing up some civilized urban animistic theocratic orcs with an eye towards animal husbandry and truth magic who are currently fighting a semi-secret war against a dwarves lich-lord.

  7. One thing I tend to do a lot is take a lot of the d20 OGC and adapt it to Legend/BRP. I know it doesn't always fit perfectly together, but there is soooo much material out there that it can often be worth it to use some of those ideas to create a fully realized world.

    When I need a power or idea I sometimes look over at GURPS too.  That stuff falls neatly into line.

  8. It would really be great to see some of the monographs produced with higher publication standards and ported into one of the above licences; the content is simply too good to be lost.

     

    Off the top of my head I would mention Lords of Tarsa and Rubble and Ruin too.  If monographs go by the wayside I hope these settings find a home.

If you've got significant time in it and you think it's something that's worth being out there, don't start by giving it away.  Refine it, select a small circle of people to review it, then look into your publishing avenues.  If at the end of all of that you still don't have an outlet for it, set it free here.

     

  10. At least it sounds like BRP/Magic World haven't been assigned to death row yet.

    Even if it's just a trickle of PDF support ala GURPS... and some more coolness from Alephtar, I'll be OK with it... vs. nothing at all.

     

    Slow trickle is fine with me.  When I introduce people to the system though, I get a better response when the system is actually in print.  This is why I now play 'Magic World' instead of 'Elric!'.

While the original goal in writing the D100II SRD was to allow people to play the Gloranthan Classics without resorting to auction sites for their RQ2 rulebook, I had also hoped that there might be some people who would write Gateway adventures in the manner of Judges Guild and the like. Sadly that doesn't seem to have happened. Maybe when GLYPHMASTER™ is done ...

    Trippy, unfortunately the answer to your question about what has changed between the RQ2 Glorantha and the current HW Glorantha is likely to fill several encyclopediae. Before the internet "Gregging" was a commonly-used term in the RQ community for retro-conning, which caused quite a few problems for campaigns back in the day so the issue wasn't born with Moon Design. Suffice to say that the Glorantha presented in the RQ2 and RQ3 era was substantially different, and infinitely simpler to get a handle on, than the Glorantha of today. Even back in the 80s people complained that Glorantha gave RQ too steep an entry learning curve. This may not matter if you're content to stick with older products, but most people who game in a published setting expect to expand their campaign with official material so those changes can be disorienting at best and contradictory at worst.

    Of course, change has two possible outcomes, fans either like it or they don't, and there are plenty of people in both camps in this case. I find myself very much in Baron's position so I tend to ignore post-RQ2 Glorantha as being just too exhausting for me to keep up with, never mind the fact that the changes to a more mythic emphasis run counter to my personal gaming taste. While I rather like RQ6 I had hoped that it would remain forever separate from Glorantha outside the realm of supplements, I was even a teeny bit disappointed that the setting used in the book for examples proved so popular. Since WoW I have always hoped that the RQ engine could be the GURPS alternative, but all Chaosium product lines seem destined to be firmly tied to particular settings.

    Anyway, I await further news. If anyone wants to get some D100II adventures out there, you know where to find me. ;)

    EDIT: Oh, and I hope there will be a decent company forum software! I gave up on the Moon Design one long ago, and I was incredibly relieved that The Design Mechanism got rid of their first version.

    Funnily enough, I was looking around at some of these ogl type things.  I think GORE actually comes closest to what I play at home.  I've been playing with some radical revisions to some magic systems.  Maybe I should just rewrite it from the ground up.  If the system I use is going to go away I will want some resources out there.

  12. By the way, I do want to offer a very heartfelt congratulations to Pete, Loz and the good people at DM.  This change is pretty huge and you've got some exciting times ahead.  I do wish you all the best with it.  Please don't forget us MW folk in your future plans.
