  1. I've actually got the whole line of that old Wizards RPG, but haven't really looked through it. One of those impulse purchases.

Damn, I forgot those existed. I've paged through those books. I think Wizards is the only game I know of that has a dedicated skill for Fine Manipulation using the character's toes. The other thing I vaguely remember are the mutants in the back of the Scortch book. Fun Stuff! Definitely worth looking through.

Starchaser: Legend of Orin is pretty fun stuff... the Sword of Shanarra to Star Wars' Lord of the Rings (if that makes any sense).

Years ago I saw this film on HBO. I didn't catch the name of it and spent years looking for it, on and off. I finally caught it again and your description is pretty apt. In fact, I'd say Sword of Shanarra is to LotRs as Starrchasers is to Star Wars.

  2. Anyone remember the animated movie Fire and Ice? That might cool to develop into a campaign.

How about Ralph Bakshi's Wizards as a setting? Post-apocalyptic mutants and elves, fairies, etc.

Two Bakshi movies mentioned on one page. Does my heart good. Speaking of old cartoon movies, anyone every see Starchasers: Legend of Orion? It's a bastard hybrid of Star Wars and Heavy Metal. It could make for a fun one off.

  3. The Vehicle chart on p. 267 shows both attributes for vehicles: there is a Rated Speed and MOV for each vehicle.

You're right, I missed that. I will point out that the horse MOV is 4 on that chart and the Creature write up is MOV 12.

Mind you, I'm not being critical of the book. I'm just pointing out an inconsistency because Atgxtg asked.

  4. SIZ? then maybe some people would like to play fatman in your game. :)

    Well...

I rather view it as an artifact of the system. DEX is a combination of agility and manual dexterity. SIZ is a combination of height and weight.

If you're a big guy or gal, you're going to control the movement options in your immediate area. If you're dealing with an extended movement contest, you're going to have to deal with CON checks. I view 'fatman' as a character with a high SIZ and a low CON. I also think Aragorn (who is tall and healthy) can cover more ground than Frodo (who is short and healthy). Hence, the houserule.

After POW, SIZ is the strongest stat in BRP. It affects both damage bonus and hit points. Anyone who wants to 'game' the system is goning to put points in SIZ, and not for a high MOV stat.

  5. I've had a chance to glance over the movement rules for vehicles. It actually operates on two different systems. Vehicles have a 'Rated Speed' and Creatures have a 'Move.' To give you a comparison, under the equipment section, a horse has a Rate Speed of 2. Under the Creatures section, a horse has the Move of 12.

  6. 1. My order was put in two hours after they set out the email letting people know about it.

    2. It shipped on December 28th

    3. It is #71

Really? I ordered mine the day after the free shipping deal was up. Mine also shipped on Dec 28th and was #70. Sounds like you fell through the cracks somehow.

  7. I wonder how many they sold? I'm hoping they sold them all, as that would be a good indication that the final product would also sell well.

Well, I wasn't going to buy it, but after the free shipping offer expired, I broke and bought one anyway. When I get my book I'll post the number here.

  8. Yes, you should buy it and I'll tell ya why.

    1. Cleanest, most streamlined BRP rules system and more complete than CoC. It also makes scaling skills to well over 100% easy.

    2. The character digest is a great tool to quickly creating npc. See, along with personalities from Moorcock's writings, they included generic npcs like Calvary Man, Pirate, Decadent Noble. I use these constantly.

    3. Spot Rules are a great way to cover most actions that could occur during the game on a mechanical level without cluttering up the game system. Rules for Explosions, Fighting in Low Light, Fighting While Down, etc. are all present.

    4. Better rules for Champions of Law and Chaos. They got rid of those stupid amulets.

    5. People either like or dislike the spells system in SB5. I love it. Especially since I'm not always actually playing in the YK.

Honestly, you don't need the book. I think a lot of this stuff made it into the new BRP book. I actually prefer Elric! over SB5 despite SB5 having a little more content. Maybe it's nostalgia, or just knowing the book too well, but I can flip through the Elric! book and find something in seconds. I just think it's really well laid out.

  9. Finding 20% is simple and only has to involve one 'mental math' check. Double your skill. That's it. Most people find it easy to multiply by two.

After that, it's just a question of placing a decimal point and rounding up (or dropping the decimal, depending on agreed upon rules).

That being said, I leave a place on the character sheet for the player to scrawl their Crits and Specials.

  10. First off, welcome to the boards!

    1) Do you think you'll get sleep anytime soon with all of the questions from this board directed at you?

    2) Do you really like the cover of the book? (I kinda do, actually. But I don't think it will play in the current marketplace. I actually like someone's suggestion of a black background with a grey Chaosium dragon logo filling the cover. Also, I acknowledge that this is a loaded question. Feel free to ignore.)

    3) Was it worth it? As a playtester, I believe you've provided a great manuscript. From you're live journal, I know there's a lot of change happening in your life. What about the process would you like to have been different?

    4) How's your daughter doing? Too bad you're on the other side of the continent. We could set up a play date with my Fiona and your little girl.

  11. I once did a basic write up in which reptilian and amphibian humanoids were ancient and ruled the world. Their kingdom was challenged by upstart mammals.

On the cold blooded side, there were things like brutish crocodile men, mystic serpent men, gregarious frog men, thieving chameleons and the lizard men high lords who rode on the backs of flying dragon-like creatures.

Opposed to these forces were a ragtag group of homo erectus and cro magnon. HE was the brains, CM, the brawn. There were a variety of ape like beings as slaves. The 'knights' ride giant, tree dwelling gorillas. etc.

  12. At first I was upset at the Mongoose posts on RPGnet about MRQ being BRP with the serial numbers filed off. Then I got over it.

Then I was pissed at the whole Mongoose playtest debacle. But I got over that too.

I bought the MRQ main book and companion, read them, then gave them away to someone who might use them. The system was so-so with faults well documented elsewhere. I wasn't so upset about that as I was at the cost to content ratio.

I got Lankhmar and Newhon because I wanted to mine it for a game set there. I was a bit disappointed that it didn't really do anything new (and seemed to borrow from some fan based material...).

I've been picking up the eternal champion stuff. It's interesting and I'll probably use some of the content with Elric! as a core.

Maybe all that sets a precedent, because when Deluxe RuneQuest (hmm, where have I heard that before) comes out, I'm going to pick it up. I kinda feel loyal to Chaosium as a company, which is something that I rarely say. However, the interest in D100 systems that MRQ is bringing to the hobby could be very beneficial to Chaosium. Especially as Chaosium has a superior product in DBRP.

So, I don't want to see system wars either. Mongoose is going to profit from me because I feel like stealing bits and pieces from them. Chaosium can profit from Mongoose if MRQ players are interested in expanding their rules set (and if the various rumored supplements for DBRP come out, their settings).

Secondary to all this is the 'do it yourself' feeling that comes along with BRP. Whether it's the dearth of published BRP stuff or the nature of a BRP player, we seem to like to tinker. Those among us who are generous like to share their ideas. For whatever it's worth.

What I would like to see is people supporting all these games. I'd like to see websites with conversion rules and examples of how to use Legendary Abilities in D100, HeroQuest Cults converted to RQ, the excellent modularity of RQ applied to BRP etc.

    *snip*

Is that too much to ask?

Nope. Check out our own AikiGhost's post over at RPGnet 'Adding Heroquest style augments to RQ and BRP?'

  13. I really want to run a gritty, pulpy sword & sorcery game using the Bronze Grimoire and the Wilderlands of High Fantasy

I think it would run better with Stormbringer5 than with D&D too.

Personally, I'd love to run a tongue in cheek Mystara game. Play up the campiness and the deadliness. I'd probably go with Stormbringer5 for the base system, WoW Wizardry for magic and RQ3 Divine magic for Clerics. Mix in RQ3 Creatures book and some elbow grease and we've got some old school-like goodness.
