  1. Thanks for the link. A little much reading straight on, but I saw a lot of things in there that was of definite value and also: quite a lot like some things I've thought over in RPG's!

    Erik Brickman.

  2. By now, I have worked something like 20 odd years with my own RPG system and world of EBROS (called many things before this), and that's a lot of time. But I work as fast as a snail on sleeping drugs. So what have I achieved? Not much, but then sometimes comes s o m e t h i n g that can be called productive results, maybe this is such as thing? Only you viewers can tell me that.

I know the Ebrosian Character Sheet (v5.0) needs some explaining, but it's easier if you ask - if you're interested that is - and I then answer directly on subject.

Dam. div. for instance is something I've called a "Damage divider", something only v e r y experienced warriors and the like get, which helps them survive those humongous hits, hopefully.

Tanj is like Hero Points (an acronym borrowed from the Ringworld stories).

Anyhoo, there is an attached picture of the sheet (jpg-format)in my public album of Ebros material. Just look there.

  3. Which systems?.

I'd say AD&D (as a matter of fact, even the 3rd ed D&D would come in handy), Gurps and - if it's possible - the age-old system of Judges Guild. Then Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (1st ed) wouldn't hurt... just to name a few. Perhaps even old system parts by Task Force Games, like the ones they use in the Central Casting-books.

Why do you need more than one? Just curious.

Because I am a collector of quite a few different RPG (FRP mostly) books from all kinds of different publishers, both old OOP and new ones. And I intend to use a lot of these books and their material (modified) in my own world of EBROS. I fervently collect fantasy communities, such as cities, towns and villages to be able to easier populate my central continent. Atleast that's the plan.

  4. I've actually asked for a game using BRP on rpol.net using sorcery (a few interested players but no volunteer GM yet, so if anyone feels the urge...) as I think that kind of game would work fine on a board or via email.

Hmm, rpol.net? What's that, have to check. Anyhow, yes as you say, point and click-magic sucks and, quite frankly, should not be something incorporated in the "true" BRP tradition.

I'd volunteer did I not live in Sweden... It's a long way to walk.

    Erik.

  5. ...has there been any other only-ritual-magic-system in the worlds of BRP?

I'm talking the first version of Stormbringer here, it's a favourite of mine.

Spells in FRPs tend to be "flash bang nonsense" as (Greg Stafford was it?) so aptly put it once, in Pendragon. I myself really like ritual magic, and what I mean with the phrase is this: there are no real "spells", only creatures that can be summoned and bound, and who gives spell-like effects. When these creatures are "spent" (have returned to their natives planes), the supply of "spells" is ended, and the magician has to sit down (or stand up) and go through the whole summoning/binding ritual again. I think: NICE!

    Anyone else like this too?

    Erik.

  6. ...But I have never seen a sort of "conversion system" that would work for multiple systems. I wonder if such a thing would even be possible.

No you're right. What I mean is more a conversion 'platform' or 'model', and one for each different other RPG systems I need.

    By AD&D I presume you're talking about 1st or 2nd edition?

Yep, that's right. And also other systems, such as Gurps, Rolemaster, etc.

Well, I'll have a look see on the net.

    Thanks!

    Erik.

  7. This has almost certainly been addressed here before, but I haven't seen any thread on it. The question is: I need conversion from other systems to BRP, for example from AD&D to BRP, is there any such help given anywhere, where I could get it?

    Thankful for any answer.

    Erik B.

  8. Well, don't expect a rapid turnaround ;)

Between work, home and my own C coding rust (hmm, maybe I did something

significant 10 years ago), it'll take some time. [...]

    -V

Just that you're doing this, taking a stab at it so to speak is wonderful! I'm very (with a capital V) interested in a BRP generator for the (PC and MAC).

So take all the time you need. Can't get anything bad from trying.

    Thanks.

  9. Mark me up for Gods of Law too.

I managed to find Gods of Chaos in a flgs in Manchester. I never did see any of the others.

Hear, hear! Mark me up also for copies of these if it is at all possible... which it doesn't seem! Which also is cryy-hyyy-ing shame!

Or? I mean, on a site like this it should be possible to get loooots people interested in buying atleast a xerox copy of the original, is it so tightly copyrighted??

Just my untethered heart crying here.

  10. Hrm...

How to start this, this, well... truly remarkable (!) find I did the other day on Ebay. Apparently Greg Stafford, you know, THE Greg Stafford of original Glorantha and the Grand Old Heydays of Chaosium and all that, have started to sell off (or even managed to sell off everything already) from his own private collection... on EBAY!!!

I thought I'd fallen asleep drooling in front of my PC and was dreaming nice unrealistic dreams... but no!

Anyway, I got a couple of bids in on what Stafford called "RUNEQUEST, 1st ed_, Chaosium House Copy! AUTOGRAPHED" and even managed to win it! On the front it says "Display Copy", but I don't mind!

I'm trying to include a few pictures of the grand price -I HAD to brag- :

  11. Hi all.

I'm just wondering, Chaosium has stated that preordering the BRP book is now available from their website. But, if one have already done that (as I have) from Steve Jackson Games' website, what preorder goes first??

I know this is probably the wrong place for this question, but maybe I'll get lucky and get an answer from the Chaosium people here also? Otherwise I'll get in touch with them there.

Happy with all answers on this one.

    Erik Brickman.

  12. Well, I've gotten a sad string of thoughts in my brain: is the main problem that paper prints are beginning to get so out of favour with the younger (and much younger) generations, that pen&paper RPGs seem like something out of the dark ages these days? Is everything that isn't an end product online getting jawns as a response? Maybe it's the schools of our western civ that's to blame for this?

Or is it just me and my inherent pessimism?

    Erik Brickman.

  13. I've always loved the idea of using mecha and other equipment from that particular brand of sci-fi, but have never really seen a rules system that handled them with the same level of intuitiveness and ease of use as BRP.

Simply treating them as vehicles with the appropriate stats doesn't feel right to me. It lacks a certain something.

Has anyone else given this any thought?

I own Fasa's Battletech RPG; Mechwarrior 2nd Ed. It's surprisingly good and has even game mechanics that you can adapt (with a little work) for BRP. Right now I can't give you an example, but I could look it up for you.

Try to find the rules and you'll have a lot of examples of Mech vehicles.

The setting is also very good. Five great houses that fight for the succession of Earth's old Imperial Throne. I recommend a read.

  14. Harnmaster Morality is a better fit. It measures the degree to which principle motivates the character... low morality characters have more vague and subjective ideas of right and wrong (shading toward psychopathy at the low end) and high morality characters have more demanding universal codes. Frankly, speaking as someone who loves the Harnmaster ruleset, I find this characteristic poorly defined (codes of conduct vary in more than just strictness) and slighted in the rules (it doesn't affect anything except choice of god-- and a great deal of latitude is afforded even there).

Very interesting. Could it be that I've been indirectly, subconsciensly influenced by Harnmaster...? Seriously, this could very well be the case. I've always been an admirer of Columbias excellent RPG (Only one thing really buggers me; the names! Areas can be named with names that sound quite arabic next to areas with clearly Western European middle ages names styles, without a change in culture). Other than that, they're doing a great job over at Columbia. Frankly I'd like to see a close workproject with those two: Chaosium and Columbia on a joint fantasy setting.

It'a also very interesting that they have the game mechanic of this Morality already. I'll have to look into this! I owned the first edition of Harnmaster back in the days, but found the system a tad to much (then). But I've heard and read about the newer versions and find them very good from hearsay.

Personally, I really like the way Pendragon's personality traits work, and try to use them in all sorts of games, to an admittedly mixed reception. It's a concept that either clicks with a player or it doesn't; it really does with me.

Me too. Nice to hear that more people than me that enjoys the Pendragon game system way of thinking. It'd be more than enjoyable if you could tell which games you've used the traits in?

  15. Just a quick answer: TrippyHippy wrote a few days ago:

    - Morality is an interesting stat - although, it's something that's not easily definable, universal or easily measured as such.

That's absolutely on the spot. Morality is probably one of the hardest things to evaluate. My ideas along the line, as of late, are these:

First of all: I hate the old AD&D alignments, which are among the most blunt elements of showing PC values as there can be. I thought: I'm not having those "Evil" and "Good" values on Morality if I can help it. Instead, I'd like to replace them with "Egotistic" and "Generous", because these values describe a lot more of basic views on life and living than does Evil or Good because people and creatures everywhere tend to see the latter as totally different things from culture to culture.

Secondly, I do not intend to replace the more detailed Personal Values or Cultural Values with just Morality. No, Morality would just work as a fast test value when needed. I have an idea of numbering it between 1-20, with a value of 15 as "the normal" value of human or atleast ordered societies. The lower you go, the more depraved it is and inhuman in the worst meaning of the word. I'm looking for the notes right now on this right now, but can't find them, but a lot more on his may be said, hope to clarify more on this later.

    Erik Brickman.

  16. Yup. Very much so. Partly because the game had no real "defensive" abilities. [...]

Wow! These are some very good answers. And I'm going to answer them all (or atleast most of them) in turn. Because this discussion about traits are one of my favourite ones. But, right now I'm learning the basics in three Microsoft Office 2007 programs, Excel, Word and Outlook, all because I'm going to teach them all during the following wednesday, thursday and friday to a small group of people at a business company here in town. So, my time isn't all that free right now! Sorry for that because I'd like to talk about this right away.

But I'll return with some new energy soon (I hope)!

Bye for now, and thanks again,

    Erik Brickman.

  17. That sounds really good. Are you going to release it under a CC licence so we can all use it and integrate it into games and projects?

Either OGL or CC would be great, and of course you can also sell a POD version on lulu!

    :)

Hello Tavern Guvnor (I like the title)!

Well, to be honest, I haven't even begun to think about it. My aim right now is to somehow post the whole material (complete or incomplete) on my website for my world/BRP clone-system EBROS. It'll literally take years I think, mainly because I work alone on this. But, I think it's ok for people to borrow from this work, hopefully not copying it raw.

This magic system of mine is wholly my own invention, but, as I myself have borrowed a lot from material for other parts that has/is been produced from Chaosium and others, why shouldn't everyone else? One little warning though: be sure to post your own copy of the copyright text for Chaosium and/or other companies.

The best thing would be to get people who's interested in this gathered on one forum specifically for this topic, like this one. Mainly because: I'm not done with all the work on EBROS. And, it has taken so many years for me to come this far. Therefore, all new ideas on developing this are welcome.

So, that's why I'm willing to share. I know it doesn't say so on my website, but, heck, better to share and develop than not, and stand still.

    Erik Brickman.
