  3. So I really want to run a hexcrawl with brp as the basis for the rules. I have posted a few times with elements like a calander and random encounter table that I have put together. My question is this, are there any hexcrawl resources that people recommend that fit well with the brp ruleset? does anyone have any advice or tips for running it? I am trying to compile a few different things to help me create a single document for reference for running the sandbox. Also, if I finish this document, would anyone be interested in having a look at it and giving some feedback? I really like the idea of publishing it for others to use. Some of it is put together but the final document will basically have a solid framework for running a hexcrawl sandbox, a lot of tables. Very little fluff, mostly function. Thats the dream anyway.
  4. Yeah I get that. Up until now I have always run games as a kind of self contained adventure or adventures that were linked together, that I would kind of plan before each session depending on what the players were doing. I always felt that I was playing catchup though. What I like about this method is that i can do a lot of the major prep before session 1 and it frees up time between sessions to work on other parts of the game. Very few of the encounters are old final fantasy style "you fight 3 wolves", but things they can react to and will help flavour the world. It also helps me come up with more typical adventures too. If for example the players encounter animal remains with fungal growths on them, more than once, I can build a story from that. I could decide between sessions there is beast from the fungal forest in that area and maybe throw it at them without use of the table. Maybe I could come up with a quest were this fungus is ravaging the livestock of a nearby village and they could help if they want. If they choose not to then I can work with that too. But if that were to happen it wouldnt feel completely out of the blue for them because they kept finding the animal remains so this feels like something they were going to bump inot anyway. Forshadowing. Instead of just "you fight 3 wolves now move along" the table is as much for helping me world build and come up with adventures as it is to make the world feel alive for the players. At least thats the goal 😅
  5. I have yeah, and I really love them. I have used a hex flower like that (I think it was made by the same person) to pregenerate weather for my calender. So that way, I dont have to worry about generating weather on the fly. I ultimately decided to make my own map rather than randomely generate terrain but I do love these kinds of generation.
  6. I have just finished the random encounter tables for my first major region of my sandbox map. Its the first random encounter table I have ever put together and I am pretty happy with it. If anyone here has any expience with this sort of thing then please let me know if I am missing anything that would make running the sandbox a lot easier 😛 Of course I will be putting together tables for other major regions in the map but I want to get the framework down first.   8. Ever since I decided to switch to BRP as my main system, I loved the idea of using its universal nature to create a science fantasy setting. I started doing some world building and fell in love with the idea of setting it on earth 250 million years in our future. Technology is basically magic and AI Gods govern the balance of the world. This time frame means the worlds landmasses have formed another supercontinent known as Pangaea Proxima, which for now I think will be the name of the setting. I will occasionally write updates for the setting so people can throw their ideas at it and of course take anything they like. The map is for my first few hexcrawl sessions is basically complete. The first sessions will take place in the top left of the map, the only part thats really finished. The yellow start is the safe starting town of havenbrook, an isolated settlement surounded by farmland and hilly plains. The mountains surrounding it are perfectly ordinary except for the range to the south which fits the part in winter but when the snow melts, the rocky remains of a massive felled creature loom over the landcape. A remenant from the end of the world. Around its remains, a strange fungal forest has emerged over time with starnge unatural creatures emerging from time to time. Littered across the landscape are the remains of massive machines of war, all constructed to kill this one collosal being. Most are dead, but rangers tell stories of ancient machines roaming the wilds, carrying out their long forgotten purpose or purhaps long malfunctioned. I am still coming up with stat blocks for creatures and filling out the random encounter tables but hopefully I should be good to organise my first sessions soon. Also sorry if this is the wrong place to post something like this 😛

  10. Thanks very much for your advice. I hadn't even considered about rival npc adventurers but its totally doable.   11. Thanks for this advice, I am still deciding on the powers I want to be available in the setting so I will bear this in mind.

Of course, just as in old hexcrawls where a group of level 1 adventurers can stumble upon a dragons lair, there are things in my setting that can kill them if they choose to push ahead unprepared. But I will always make sure they have enough information to make a choice in situations like that. Also depending on the region of the map they are in, they can encounter different things so the initial region will not be too dangerous but they will have full knowledge of how dangerous the mountains can be well before they choose to go there.
  13. True. I was thinking of running it with herioc setting rules and using Con + Siz for the Hit points without dividing by 2 to make the players a bit more resilliant. That combined with the fate points ruling so they can reroll by spending power points and hopefully that will be a lot less deadly.
  14. So I have been preaparing a hexcrawl and putting together some rules for running it with BRP. Here is what the map looks like so far: As well as this map which is a work in progress, I also have: - Regions in the map (certin forests, the ominous mountain range, etc.) - Random encounter tables (events, creatures, sites, etc..) that correspond to those regions. - A growing list of creatures for my setting. - Some rules for hex travel. The idea is to have the map set with some key locations prepared but then to fill the wilderness with things from the random taables as the players encounter them. The travel information in the BRP has been pretty useful for determining hex sizes although I am thinking of making travel a bit more abstract for simplicity. For example, the players have so many points a day. They can spend a point to travel or to search or to do something else. I have set up the tables so searching a hex massively increases the chances of them finding something where as if they just travel through a hex there is about a 50% chance they will encounter nothing. Something like this: The outcome will lead to me rolling on another table except for no encounter. Here are my main questions: 1. Do you think the BRP can work with this kind of play. 2. Do you have any suggestions for things I might be missing. 3. Should I make more use of the D100 in the tables. 4. Just general thoughts and feedback would be super appreciated. ❤️ Thanks everyone. p.s.   15. Thank you all very much. These are all extremely useful. This definitly gives me a good idea of how to explain it to my players. I might even be able to make a visual list to represent a range of Size fro some of my more visual players. Thanks, you are all the best ❤️
