  1. In my opinion the problem with the use of BRP for "realistic" RPGs is that it has rarely been attempted, because the focus of BRP development usually was on "heroic fantasy".

I use BRP for "Realistic" games all the time. But for many many people realism = complexity and so they steer away from BRP and play GURPS or HERO instead. That level of (unnecessary IMHO) detail just puts me off a game.

  2. My simple answer to this question is that a large number of players either instinctively like or have been trained to like RPG systems that let you "game" the system (EG: All editions of D&D but especially 3rd & 4th) or alternately are fixated on "realism" where realism = complexity and detailed weapon stats.

BRP does neither of these things and so isn't aimed at those players/GMs. BRP is essentially a simple system which in GNS terms is set about half way along the gamist/simulationist access. As such it will neither appeal to hardcore gamists (a large number of D&D style groups fall here) or to those obsessed with "Realism".

    My 2 cents.

  3. My first thought when I read about the game was, "That's the dumbest idea I've ever heard." Then, as I thought about it more, "There might be some potential...

First time i heard it I thought "Awesome! Ulysses 31 the RPG at last!", when I heard it used the Talislanta (Omni) system I was completely sold.

  4. In that case the 880% should be listed under the Stormbringer entry not Elric's. And with your explanation, Elric's player must be the worst roller in the world.

Elric doesn't have a player, hes a character in a novel. Genre novels do not emulate gaming its the other way around.

Ultimately it doesn't matter, you shouldn't really ever be near Elric and other iconic characters in an RPG IMHO. Some smart ass is always going to try to shoot Luke Skywalker in the back before he can destroy the death star in "a new hope".

  5. The setting will be called Desolation's Edge

Sounds interesting, did you ever read the living steel RPG? Really over complicated system (based off Phoenix Command modern skirmish rules) but there was a similar plague dropped on the human population by invading aliens called Kvisr which basically made everyone infected into psychopaths, the aliens then proceeded to dump a shed load of low calibre smgs that could kill humans but were ineffective against their warriors.

EDIT: What the hell is "simira"? :D

  6. Its still a hit location system that requires looking at a chart so it doesn't really work as a non hit location system as far as I'm concerned.

In the original hit locations system there's nothing to stop you rolling a d20 at the same time as your d100 attack roll after all.

Personally I will be sticking to the no hit locations system as its quicker and easier, those are the reasons I use BRP for almost everything.

  7. The problem with that would be that if you trained your Unarmed skill up to 100 then you would start at that percentage with any weapon you're unskilled in.

You say that like its a bad thing? I like the idea of having melee training apply to every hand weapon, 90% of the time you'll only ever use your own melee weapon anyway, also having a single melee skill stops the "golf bag of weapons" tick hunting phenomenon you sometimes see in runequest games.

  8. Its a kind of a historical one from RQ1/2, different named spells differentiated between different cultures, since weapons were/are very culturally based in Glorantha.

Sure but its just as easy to have "damage boost" as the spell in the book and then say "Lunars call it channeling the red queens might" and Heortlings call the same spell "Orlanths Prowess". Same end result though, one spell in the book instead of two.

  9. Anyway I played in Dead Pot County at Continuum and had fun (I played the Death Warrior undead hunter type), but to be honest I couldn't really see the difference between SQ and MRQ, I guess whatever differences there are never really came up in play.

  10. Tell me more???

I have had A/State for some time now but the system is not all that great.

What rules did you use generally and how did you go about converting weapons etc? Was it easy?

All I really had to do was rationalize the skill list and make a life path style character generation system that fitted the setting and use it to generate appropriate skills and so on. Weaponry pretty much translates directly EG: a Sparklock = 1 shot medium pistol, etc. the same for Armour.

I also added a Soc (social level) stat instead of EDU, which decides what background options you can move to depending on your PCs origins and original social class.
