  1. Personally, I think that there is not just one way of defining blood relationships in Sartar.

    • Most clans follow an Orlanthi model
    • Some clans from the north may follow kinship similar to Yemlanian clans.
    • Some clans from the south may follow kinship similar to Ernadlan clans.
    • Some clans follow one model but with influences from another model.

So, most clans in Sartar would follow the normal Orlanthi way of determining kinship.

However, some clans in the south may well have kinship determined by matriarchial descent, so you belong to the clan if your mother did. Some clans would combine the two, so you belong to the clan if your father did, but a certain bloodline in the clan is determined by the mothers.

I much prefer a messier approach, as it can lead to ambiguities. If one clan is patrilineal and another is matrilineal, then an Adventurer could well belong to both clans, one through the father and one through the mother. A relationship approved by one clan could be considered taboo by another.

I may have missed something in the thread here, but to get good translations it may a good idea to see if we can agree (more or less) upon what God Learner means in English. Should 'Learner' be read as meaning both 'Teacher/Master' and 'Student' at the same time, or is it just the 'Student' part that applies?

What other English terms could have been appropriate? Pupil, beginner and apprentice capture the student aspect, while scholar can be both a student and a teacher.

It's more like Researcher or Studier, maybe Knower.

  3. For many years, RQ fans have said that RQ suits Glorantha better than D&D because Classes and Levels don't work in Glorantha. Then 13th Age Glorantha came along and showed that Classes and Levels do work in Glorantha. I am convinced by Classes, but not so much about Levels.

So, now that D&D sort-of works in Glorantha, there is an argument about which flavour of D&D works best. That is an argument that nobody will win.

I played AD&D back in the day and bought 3e. I thought that 3e was D&D with a lot of things from RQ, for example different spells for different gods for clerics, which matched the Gloranthan experience. I freely admit that I haven't seen, and know nothing about, 4e or 5e, except that different people say that each edition is the work of the devil and is nothing like D&D "should be".

People have different preferences. People will prefer one edition over another. That's life. RQ has goine through more versions than D&D and there are passionate people for each version.

Not sure what the point of debating different versions of D&D here is, though.

My opinion would be...does it REALLY matter...if you want to change the price do so...i mean  what actual difference does it make, if your story demands someone can have or get a bow then do it....

Special offer - two bows for the price of one, genuine Praxian Bows, not your Grazeland knock-offs, Roll up, Roll up!

  5. I've been roundly thrashed playing Dragon Pass at EternalCon for the last couple of years. However, that's the only place I get to play this glorious game.

Personally, I prefer Dragon Pass to White Bear & Red Moon. The map is far better, the rules are tighter and more compatible with Nomad Gods.

  6. One problem is that people compare price lists and equipment from vastly different periods.

Glorantha is supposed to be Bronze Age (It isn't, but let's pretend for a bit). In the Bronze Age, nomad bbows were very rarely present outside the steppe. Self bows were around and the Egyptians seem to have used a bow, but were usually slingers (But let's not get onto Bows vs Slings, eh?).

However, people are comparing them to medieval Yew Long Bows, composite bows and all sorts of things, over a couple of thousand years.

In any case, the price of a bow in medieval England or in Brionze Age Scythia should have no bearing on the price of a bow in Glorantha, other than to say "They were cheap/They were expensive".

  7. Griffin Mountain had a weather table that you could use to determine what the weather was going to be, based on the previous weather and time of year. It was very useful, especially when I generated the weather for the next week or so. Orlanthi and Storm Bulls could determine whether weather was "natural" or "magical", using their weather senses, which turned out to help with certain plots.

It would be nice to be able to do the same thing for Prax, Sartar and the Holy Country, but the weather in those places is different and would have different rules.

In my games, weather is ignored, unless it becomes important. So, when travelling,, heavy rain/snow/thick fog and so on makes travel times longer, fog helps with ambushes and that kind of thing. Where there are Yelmites and Orlanthi, Cloud Cover affects certain spells, so it us useful to know. A Cloud Call/Clear contest between Yelmalians and Orlanthi is always fun.

  8. "Normal" people wouldn't have a large Rune Pool, maybe one or two points, so they can cast some runemagic but not a lot. They would also focus on those spells that affected their lives the most.

Traders would probably protect their stalls with a Create Market spell, as it makes sense. It also makes Create Great market more useful. It always bothered me that most Issaries Traders were likely to be Initiates, but only Priests would routinely cast Create Market.

I've read that the Qin dynasty confiscated weapons, but not that the Roman Empire tried it.

One of the many reasons for the Iceni Revolt was that the Romans took away their weapons. One of the reasons the Angles took over East Anglia so easily was that the Iceni were stripped of all their weapons after the revolt.

I haven't found the Ultimate Mongol Empire Guide for Legend, only for EGS and Savage Worlds. Where can I find it ?

I bought it from Drive Thru RPG. It's pretty good as a bare bones character generation and tactical book, but doesn't have a great deal in the way of fluff. But, there again, I always try to write a 40 page book that ends up between 200-300 pages, so I am biased to having lots of fluff in Alternate/Mythic Earth supplements.

  11. I think that RQG prices tend to go with the concept that "swords and bows are expensive and only the elite can adfford them", whereas a lot of people have been brouight up with images of medieval people carrying swords and bows routinely.

Personally, I prefer them to be fairly routine items.

Even composite bows, which were once the preserve of nomad groups, are pretty much freely available. Don't forget that, in Glorantha, Pentians ruled much of Dara Happa several times and Praxians have been trading for many years, so composite bows are far more common that might be imagined. Having something more common should reduce the price.

Lots of cults don’t have rune lords, Ernalda, Eiritha, chalana arroy to name but a few. It’s not a new concept. Rune lords are the martial aspect of a cult, if your not martial you likely don’t have them.

    Ahem, Arroin ...

Thed and the Bloody Tusk are NOT NOT NOT intended for players. Frankly, I'd be inclined to kick any player who wanted to play a Thed cultist in an ongoing campaign out of my gaming group for obvious reasons.

I understand that CHA means leadership not charm.

But it is a change. Formerly, some Swords of Humakts were leaders - and some were duelists, and some were champions supported by patrons, with no great need to get others to follow them. Given that they are generally "cold, fatalistic, merciless, and taciturn", it seems safe to assume that at least some of them were not overly charismatic.

In the past, Rune Lords had to have POW 15, which meant that they were magically powerful. Now, they have CHA 18, which means they are charismatic leaders. I prefer that they are charismatic leaders.

However, I'd probably use CHA 15, rather than 18, leaving CHA 18 for Priest-Lords.

In RQ2, we played that a Rune Lord who went below POW 15 stayed a Rune Lord, but a Priest who went below POW 18 temporarily lost access to reusable Runemagic. I take it that this does not apply in RQG?

If you reach a threshold to become a runic level and then, at a later stage, go below that threshold, do you retain the runic level?
