  5. Call of Cthulhu's Horror on the Orient Express has long been revered as one of the most iconic and acclaimed horror campaigns in tabletop roleplaying — so we're very excited that a new board game adaption is coming! In this design journal series, co-designers Adam Kwapiński and Michał Gołąb Gołębiowski share insights on the development of the new game, which is to be launched on Kickstarter in 2024, and released in early 2025. Horror on the Orient Express: The Board Game Design Diary #1 – Where Our Journey Begins Horror on the Orient Express: The Board Game Design Diary #2 – The First Prototype Post by Michał Gołąb Gołębiowski Analysing Expectations In the previous Design Diary entries, Adam told the story on how everything started. Now, let me take you through the initial phases of our design process. Both Adam and I have created many games over the years, so when we first sat down to work together we had many differing ideas on what a proper board game design process should look like. But fortunately our dieas on the first step was very much the same: answering the question of what the game should actually be? This is where we asking ourselves: if someone told me about the game today, what would it be about? If I bought the game today, what would I expect to see in the box? If I got to play the game today, how would I expect it to go? Now you can see the pattern: analyzing expectations, as they are guides to making an exciting board game. We appreciate we are standing on the shoulders of giants - the Horror on the Orient Express TTRPG campaign is a magnificent theatrical experience, building off both the supernatural world of Cthulhu and the amazing tension of Agatha Christie's train-confined mystery. So we thought: let's have our first first prototype represent everything that fulfills these obligations! So, firstly, the passengers: a proper story needs the protagonists, the antagonists and the supporting actors. This last group is key – while most board games do feature the players and their opponents, it is very rare for the game world to be actually populated. Here we placed on board the train some 20 passengers the players can interact with, each with their own attitude! There are three types of people: investigators, controlled by players; suspects, a small subset of passengers, each hiding secrets (and some of whom are the cultists); and the unsuspecting fellow travelers who have yet to realize what is happening. Next, the train – and I mean THE TRAIN: the stage for the dramaturgy of events in the game, and the physical bounds for characters to move around. Obviously we want to evoke the Orient Express is as seen in the original HotOE campaign. And the Train does not go through a void. Actually it sort of does, as we've based the story around the Dreamlands part of the campaign journey, but that's even better! We've created a long set of tracks going by a long line of ever changing landscapes that the train encounters on its unstoppable way forward. Then the obligatory Mythos creatures, the stuff of nightmares lurking around in the darkness outside the train, waiting for people to stumble. And the last one, but very important to the game and the story: the evil antagonist (who we shall not name here), moving from car to car unhindered with its own agenda. Putting all these elements together, we knew there was an amazing game somewhere in there. But we also understood that the devil is in the details, and so now it was time to start the real work – turning our vision into a reality, and making this board game true to its legacy.

  7. Today marks a significant milestone – the 150,000th product sold on the Miskatonic Repository Established in December 2018, the Miskatonic Repository is Chaosium's platform on DriveThruRPG for independent Call of Cthulhu creators. Since then titles in this community content program have received critical praise, won several ENNIE and other awards, prompted the creation of a dedicated Storytelling Collective stream for first-time Call of Cthulhu creators, regularly topped the best seller lists at DriveThruRPG, and have sold out at pop-up stores at Chaosium conventions. And, most importantly of all, the program has fostered a thriving and dynamic community of independent creators, each exploring the Cthulhu Mythos in their own way, yet strongly supportive of each other in such groups as the Miskatonic Repository Creator's Circle on Facebook and community-run events like Miskatonic Repository Con. There's even the Miskatonic Playhouse, a podcast dedicated to playing and showcasing scenarios from the Miskatonic Repository. The #MiskatonicMonday posts at the Chaosium news blog also promote new releases in the Miskatonic Repository on a regular basis. Chaosium vice president Michael O'Brien said, "We congratulate the hundreds of independent creators involved in reaching this significant milestone, many of whom got their first experience of publishing a TTRPG title in the Miskatonic Repository. They are part of a thriving and supportive Call of Cthulhu creator community, producing works of amazing variety, set in mysterious locations all over the world and in time periods from Ancient Egypt to the far future. We encourage Call of Cthulhu fans to check out everything on offer in the Miskatonic Repository, and if they have an itch to create something themselves, our community is ready to help!" A number of writers, artists, editors, and cartographers have gone on to create directly for Chaosium's official Call of Cthulhu line, and even joined the Chaosium team. Check out the Miskatonic Repository at DriveThruRPG here.

  17. As Dicebreaker exclusively revealed late last week, following the release of Call of Cthulhu: Arkham this month, the next two releases for the Call of Cthulhu tabletop roleplaying game will be scenario collections. Quoting Dicebreaker: "[Arkham] will be followed by two adventure collections for Call of Cthulhu. The first will be Call of Cthulhu: The Order of the Stone, a new three-part campaign set during the 1920s. The Order of the Stone will be released this April. Following that, an currently untitled Call of Cthulhu scenario collection will make its way to the table in May. The previously unannounced anthology is billed by publisher Chaosium as a follow-up to its 2020 book Gateways to Terror, which featured three standalone adventures and four pre-made characters designed to showcase the game’s mix of horror, investigation and mystery in sessions that could be wrapped up in just an hour or so. The new scenario collection is similarly designed to work as a next step from Call of Cthulhu’s Seventh Edition Starter Set, allowing new players to take on the scenarios without requiring the RPG’s full core rulebook [Keeper Rulebook]. Each adventure will last around one hour." Read more at Dicebreaker!

  24. -- David Waldron receiving the prize at the awards ceremony in Melbourne, Australia -- Congratulations to Miskatonic Repository creator David Waldron, whose Call of Cthulhu creation William Bailey's Haunted Mansion is a winner at the 2023 Victorian Community History Awards. This commendation for the History Interpretation Award, recognising "projects which use unique formats of historical interpretation", was given in a ceremony in Melbourne, Australia today by the Royal Historical Society of Victoria in conjunction with the Public Record Office Victoria. First presented as a live actual play production at the Ballarat Heritage Festival in May 2023, William Bailey's Haunted Mansion was published as a one-shot adventure on the Miskatonic Repository, Chaosium's platform for independent Call of Cthulhu creators at DriveThruRPG, in October 2023. Set in the turbulent 1890s of the historic city of Ballarat in Victoria's Goldfields, Australia, the scenario explores some of the places, figures and legends in that folklore and the machinations of a real but today largely forgotten cult which operated in western Victoria in the late 19th century; the New Lights or Stephenites, named after their ruthless and charismatic leader Stephen. Chaosium vice president Michael O'Brien said, "William Bailey's Haunted Mansion is a masterclass of showing how you can deftly concoct a (fictional) Cthulhu Mythos tale out of real historical happenings, bringing in known locations, authentic artefacts and documents, and actual people who lived at the time. We congratulate David Waldron and the talented players and musicians who brought the story to life at the gaming table, and have now published the scenario and received recognition with this award." William Bailey's Haunted Mansion is available in PDF and print (POD) formats at DriveThruRPG.
  25. They will go sale very soon, hopefully early next week.
