  1. I can't wait to see the increase of chatter in this thread beyond the already high level when it is announced that Wizards of the Coast have bought the rights to RuneQuest and Glorantha, for a D&D4E version. ;D

Or by PEG, for Savage Worlds..... O:)

... as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced...

  2. what we need a full distribution Basic Role Playing Bestiary with all new art and a good spread of creatures for all genres and styles of play.

And not another rehash of a reprint of a reprint of all the same creatures Sandy Peterson came up with in 1980 in the Gateway Bestiary. I don't recall seeing any (well not many) new creatures since then. =|

  3. And lets face it which is going to be more fun to roleplay ?

    1) leaping from the wooden horse, running to the gates of Troy and letting the Greek army in whilst desperately holding back the warriors of troy for a few vital seconds

    2) ambling over to a farmer and explaining the finer points of turnip growing

    3) Slowly infiltrating and undermining political/cultural control/communication to obtain maximum dominance with minimal loss (which looks like #2 for some) ;D

  4. Soltakss made some notes on converting HeroWars to D100/BRP, which might help with using later Gloranthan material with BRP:

Additionally, a good number of the new (and old) Third Age Glorantha works from Issaries are mostly system independent:

One key point that people have made is that the newer Issaries material does present a Glorantha with a differing feel to the older RQ material. Although you can mix and match to taste.

  5. Because of course extensively using Glorantha as the default setting has caused crippling Gregging issues for Mongoose Runequest that have almost killed the product, such that you can hardly find it in games shops, unlike BRP which.... er... hang on a minute!

On the Gloranthan side, at the end of the Second Age, it all goes away. Perhaps as if it never existed (I am guessing that this (combined with some form of agreement) is why Greg is not so concerned about this version of Glorantha, and hence not inclined to impose any Gregging).

Unless at some stage the Third Age is retcon'ed, as George Lucas has done with some parts of episodes 4, 5 and 6 of Star Wars (in the wake of episodes 1, 2 and 3).

  6. But do you know that, if it's not on the shelf, it won't be bought. ;)

If a lot of BRP material was put on the shelf, is there a feeling that BRP would become popular? Or does the nature of the popularity of the likes of Savage Worlds and D&D give a sense that the risk is not worth taking?

  7. At the end of the day it's all about a lack of product on the shelf.

How do you know that once it is on the shelf, that it will be bought?

If there is an equal amount of of several different systems on the shelf (with equal representation and presentation), will the rate of purchase be the same for all of those systems?

  8. I may well be wrong, but I sometimes have the impression that the preferred style of roleplaying games follows the same trends as literature and movies do, and therefore changes over time.

    BRP Twilight... ;D

Another possible reason is that BRP (and other tabletop RPG's) are competing with the "instant and visual gratification, not much thought or creativity required" nature of most Console "RPG's". These also almost always promise varying degrees of munchkin satisfaction (which is in line with Rust's comment regarding invincible characters).

  9. Happy Winter Solstice Holiday of you choosing, everyone!

Happy Summer Solstice Holiday of you choosing as well, everyone!

Those of you who are off-world, Happy Holiday of your choosing. And for those who are not having a Holiday, have a Happy Time. ;D

  10. How about:

    motif

    Definition: central theme

Synonyms: concept, design, idea, logo, notion, pattern, structure, subject

    element

    Definition: essential feature

Synonyms: aspect, basic, basis, bit, component, constituent, detail, drop, facet, factor, fundamental, hint, ingredient, item, material, matter, member, part, particle, particular, piece, portion, principle, root, section, stem, subdivision, trace, unit, view

    quality

    Definition: characteristic, feature

Synonyms: affection, affirmation, aspect, attribute, character, condition, constitution, description, element, endowment, essence, factor, genius, individuality, kind, make, mark, name of tune, nature, nature of beast, parameter, peculiarity, predication, property, savor, sort, trait, virtue, way of it

Or from the world of Object Oriented programming: property (and skills are methods ;D).

  11. In conclusion the incidence of accidentally striking an unintended location (at that particular practice) proved to be less that one in a hundred.

Would the intended location become the intended location as a result of circumstances and therefore be a target of opportunity that was chosen after it presented itself by happenstance?

  12. I think I may have found a houserule that may fix the issue for me somewhat. I'll do some testing and let you know.

For a thorough rules test you could try simulating the Best Action Scene Of ALL TIME [WARNING: Contains animal scenes that may offend or be found disturbing].

Just as there is a 99 Bottles of Beer program listing for almost every programming language, there should be a play session transcript of this scene for each and every RPG system. ;D

  13. I do think that people are tending to forget that Choose Location is just one of several manoeuvres and that in pure rules terms it is on a par with disarming, impaling, tripping and so on

I think one thing to consider is that when an attacker "chooses" a location, they have generally fought in such a way (either conscious thought, muscle memory or reactive skill) so as to lead an opponent, or generally create those circumstances that lead to the best desired outcome for the attacker.

In contrast, consider the stories of Bruce Lee telling an opponent exactly how and where he will hit, then doing it.

  14. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for something on Elephant Combat!

How about Elephants with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads? ;D

(I know, I know, it's old now, and distracts from the thread. But it seemed funny at the time.)

Edit: And a picture here of a Micronauts Terraphant.

However, a Sci-Fi Rome cross-over source book would also be interesting, and could supplement/combine both Rome and BRP Mecha. I am always reminded of the romanized Ingram MAC-X (10) from Guns! Guns! Guns! by Greg Porter.

... than Legolas-style combat between player characters and elephants.

Imagines Legolas wielding a Beam Gladius (or Light Saber) and fighting Terraphants! - Wickedly cool!

PPS: I recall a Dr Who comic from 1980 called The Iron Legion - Cover Picture, Blurb and Wiki Entry - Maybe something worth perusing for a published BRP source book (with tie-ins to existing Alephtar products). There is even a hook into Call of Cthulhu with Magog and the Great Old Ones.

Imagines Legolas wielding a Beam Gladius (and a Light Saber) and fighting Great Old Ones driving SPQR Terraphants! - Double Plus Good!! ;t)

  15. Personal observations only but Savage Worlds

    a) seems to arouse very strong feelings considering just how dull the ruleset is

    B) has some very clever little bits to it

    c) gets everything right except the core mechanic (a bit like D6 Star Wars)

If you make people feel like they have achieved something through a simple mechanism and made the experience perceived to be stimulating, then you win peoples' favour. Call me judgmental. I wonder if this is covered by a Dunning-Kruger study somewhere.

  16. Could you use this as a feature in a crossover game, where PCs (or the villains they're battling) get transferred to another world and suddenly their powers (magical or otherwise) don't work the way they used to? In addition to comic books, we've seen this trope in The Magician's Nephew and Elfquest #1.

Imagine the fun in a game where characters move from a "Roll Under" game systems universe to a "Roll Over" game system universe (where the requirements from a character's original system mechanics are maintained rather than converted). =|

Otherwise, I would not use "Game Mechanics" to represent "Universe/World Mechanics (Physics/Laws)". I would most likely simulate the change of universe via roll-play and special effect within the rules mechanics of the new system.
