  1. No. DQ is not a BRP game. It's a truly wonderful example of how to write an rpg as an SPI game, with headings and sub heading and all that.

It is a truly underrated game that deserved a much greater light in the sun.

You friend will have no problems with BRP, save that he may see similarities and interpret them in a DQ way, but that'll pass.

In fact he'll probably find BRP as much looser, which he may or may not like!

  2. I did my homebrew cult writeups for RQ6, very heavily influenced by the ones in the Cults of Glorantha. I also did a writeup for the Cult of She Whe Dwells Beneath the Black Water for my scenario in Book Of Quests, but it was deleted for space. Cult writeups are very easy, especially if you have a copy of the aforementioned Cults of Glorantha.

    Tryph

    Can you post it here?

  3. MRQ2=Legend.

RQ6 is MRQ++, more nuanced but lots more of it.

OQ has a certain RQ3-lite feel to it, RQ6 is more RQ3++.

Magic World is pure Stormbringer fun.

Renaissance is a very nice clean version of OQ with guns, witches, and some great Factions rules that are a good alternative to classic RQ cult rules.

Age of Shadows is an OQ clone tailored to a very JRR style game, but more 1st or 2nd Age than 3rd Age.

What kind of game did you fancy?

  4. I would go for 99%.

According to the size table (in GORE) Clegane would be SIZ 25.

Bloody heck. No wonder he floors people with a flick of the wrist.

I'd give Jamie 95% Sword in my game before he lost his hand, and then he'd be at half skill with is off hand thereafter.

But there are others I'd give more to, since I quite like the Magic World level of game, and althoug it maybe a touch too ueber for GRR Martin, I like good characters in the 100-150% ranking.

  5. Sounds like it'll make combat more complicated for no apparent gain.

I like variable armour rolls, but they're an added dice roll, which you're going to add another modifier to..

Why go for fixed HP, what does it gain, you have a CON stat and a SIZ stat, why bother with a third?

Or to put it another way, what effect do you gain except for having some fun changing the rules?

  6. I like the BRP Auto Character Sheet a lot, but do we have a Magic World version yet?

A spreadsheet one would be funky, or an Adobe one like the BRP main one.

Just a downloadable dumb pdf would start me off..

  7. Just got the final pdf of OpenQuest 2 and I have to say it looks lovely, still got that Newt layout vibe going, error checked by Cakebread and Walton and some wonderful artwork by Simon Bray. Newt really has made a big impact on d100 gaming with this excellent OGL engine that has powered so many other games and manages, in a way all of it's own, to plough a furrow between full BRP/BGB, RQ6 finesse complexity, and Magic World rock'n'roll.

Well done Newt and the team, and aren't the rest of you just wishing you had you copy yet?

  8. RuneQuest itself is a perfect rule system for Classical Greece. So what you need then is a sourcebook for the culture of the Spartans. Frankly I'd start with Wikipedia, and from that you'll probably have enough. You then want a conflict and an enemy and the traditional enemy for Sparta is Athens and the democratic city states. That's another few Wikipedia pages. The big epic conflict between them is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peloponnesian_War.

There you go, enough fun and games for a Sparta versus Athens game.

OR you may want to have the Persians as the enemy and Athenians as allies, in which case: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_Wars

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_Athens

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sparta

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achaemenid_Empire

If you want to understand the gear a warrior might wear, always look to Osprey.

Osprey Publishing - The Peloponnesian War 431

Osprey Publishing - Spartan Warrior 735

Since this is Iron Age warfare, a copy of RQII or RQ6, or BRP BGB will allow you to quickly identify which kit is available, which skills, which cultural packages, and also whether you want to make religion a real and active thing or not. Spartan religion, politics and social order are quite different to what you might expect, and you'll have to decide how much to play that up and whether you need to have a view as to it's effects.

  9. I'd say it wasn't made as clear as it could be. Probably since it was being boiled down from another ruleset where it was clear by someone who knew what it meant!

'Spell level' wasn't a traditional core BRP term.

I worked it out cos I know how BRP magic usually works.. but I remember actually pausing and thinking 'that term is being used but not explained'..

  10. Do you think this is the Moon Design guys using some of the Kickstarter cash to pay back Greg for all his work, and give him something for his senior years?

He's never been great with money and I think it's actually a really cool and nice thing they've done.
