  6. Then you ask the player to roll for the damage he has done. "12 points? Very good, that has stung the monster a bit and made him mad." "Gulp!" "As you are standing right next to the monster, it gets the double to it's skill. A hit and lets see now, 52 points of damage. Are you wearing any armour?"

  8. The Garrison Hotel Hillsborough Barracks Penistone Road Sheffield S6 2GB The Garrison Hotel in Sheffield - Hotel, Conference Venue, Weddings and Parties Getting into the venue is straight forward, use the white door [which will have a Furnace Logo on it] to get to the main stairs. The main room is on the second floor. Or you could go through the main door of the Jailhouse restaurant and either go through the big brown wooden door to the right to get access to the main stairs or take the lift to the second floor. The main part of the venue we have for Furnace 2008 is the Garrison Room. It is located on the first floor above the main Jailhouse Restaurant. It has it’s own bar and the registration desk, the sign-up boards, the traders and main gaming area is located here. We also have a few other rooms available for games, The Cell located in the basement of the main building that contains three gaming tables and The Armoury located across the courtyard from the main building that also contains three more gaming tables. The Jailhouse Restaurant, downstairs, is open to the public but has some comfortable leather chairs with tables that would make good gaming tables for card or board games. The Garrison Room The main part of the room contains three gaming tables and has some space around the bar. This area is perfect for demonstration games and also has the signing up sheets for each session. On the lower section, where the lift is situated, there are four cells, yes-real cells that used to house miscreants and ne’er-do-wells, that make excellent gaming rooms. They are big enough to fit seven gamers into and are quite cosy, though players may struggle to walk around freely in them. They are also sound proof so are ideal for getting the game atmosphere just right. The Armoury The Armoury is located across the courtyard from the main building near the hotel’s reception. It is a large single, cavernous room with a high arched ceiling and thick strong walls so the Armoury is nice and quiet. Inside are three gaming tables that can be rearranged to suit the gaming group. The Cell Deep inside the gaolhouse at the dark bottom of the building is the Cell. Getting down there through the twisting stairways is an adventure itself though it has another entry way from the hotel’s courtyard. It is a large room with a long bench seat along the length of the room. Three gaming tables are in here, each host to the 'Cthulhu Mythos'.

  11. Here's mine: I am fast and loose with my games, especially at RPG conventions. I like to focus on story and setting mainly and like to have the game rules support this. Hence I use a rules-lite system like HeroQuest. I follow the game rules but I try to allow players creative freedom in the game with their actions, characters and with the setting. I like to have a good pace but I also allow the players to slow down and plan their moves and speculate on what is going on [this is where I get my coolest ideas from, paranoid players are a great source of inspiration]. If players have a choice between taking a sensible action that is boring or a more risky action that is more fun, I will support the more fun option. All dice rolls, even my secret ones, are in the open as failure is often more fun than success. Expect plenty of props, handouts and maps! My plots are not sacrosanct, having fun at the gaming table is.
  12. I saw this in another thread on another forum. So question is 'what is your GM style?' If you are not a GM what style do your prefer as a player?
  13. My photos are done and posted up! The main set here: Continuum 2008 - a set on Flickr The main group collection is here: Flickr: Continuum & Convulsion RPG Conventions
  14. So I have finished the Continuum 2008 FAQ and posted it up on various websites and forums. You can find it here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Continuum2008/files/CONTINUUM2008%20FAQ-04.pdf I have also posted it to the Tavern forum here: www.gamingtavern.eu :: View topic - [Continuum 2008] FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS to UK Role Players forum here: UK Role Players • View topic - [Continuum 2008] FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS and on Yog-Sothoth here: [Continuum 2008] FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - Yog-Sothoth for Lovecraft & Cthulhu - CONTINUUM FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Some general rules for getting the most out of Continuum... 1. Study the programme - note what events are happening and when; decide what panels you want to attend. Plan your weekend! 2. Study the sign-up boards for games that interest you - note any clashes with panels or other events: don't sign-up to a game that you know, or think, you'll drop out of at the last minute! 3. Don't deliberately sign-up for multiple games that overlap or clash just to secure a place. This is frustrating for GMs and other players who will commit to playing but find all the spaces gone. 4. Please be aware of your behaviour. Everyone wants to have fun at Continuum, but we will not tolerate abusive or aggressive behaviour, whether from the sober or the drink-inspired. Remember that there are families and youngsters here - and that the convention is in a residential area, too. Continuum reserves the right to ask anyone behaving in an unacceptable manner to leave the convention (and we really, really don't want to be placed in that position!). 5. If you're stuck for something to do, find a Mentor. They'll be wearing big colourful badges and are both friendly and approachable - don't hesitate to make use of them! 6. Come and see us at Continuum Control if you're still unsure - the committee will do its utmost to get you into something we think you'll enjoy.
  15. Residential registration closes at 5pm, today, Monday 21st July 2008. If you want to buy Day Passes you can do so up until 31st July. Cost if £9 for Friday and £18 each for Saturday and Sunday. Our convention membership at present is the same as 2006 (217 delegates), which is excellent news and we're all looking forward to Continuum. However, please check the Cast and Crew section of the website and, if you find your name isn't on the delegate list and should be, contact me ASAP. I'll need to know if you registered by Paypal or snail mail, and the date.
  16. Continuum 2008, John Foster Hall, Manor Road, Oadby, Leicester, LE2 2LG. Here is a map showing where the venue is located.
  17. July Update 1 Greetings Continuees, The committee had its final uber-meeting and site recce of John Foster Hall yesterday in order to finalise the programme and where various events will be staged. There will be some amendments to the published schedule as a result, so do keep your eyes on Continuum over the next week or so (and here, and over at the Tavern). Special Room Deal Our supply of en-suites has been more or less filled, but we have secured some single rooms in the adjacent houses. As these single rooms have shared facilities, we've decided to offer them to those who haven't booked yet at a discount on the normal price. The usual en-suite room-rate is £40, but we're offering shared faciilities singles at £30 per night instead (including breakfast) - a £30 saving if you book for all three nights. However, please note that this offer is unfortunately not open to people who have already booked: the university is already working through the room layouts and, because there are quite a lot of people who have requested to be roomed next to or close to friends and family, it will prove a major headache for the arrangements. So, if you haven't booked already, you do have a choice of an en-suite room at the standard cost (but we are now down to limited places), or a shared facilities single at £30 per night instead. Please let me know if you have any questions. Continuum Goodies Pre-Orders We'll be selling Continuum poloshirts as usual - a nice bottle green colour with the con logo - and you again have the option to have your shirt monogrammed with the name or slogan of your choice. Polos cost £20 for a standard or £25 for a monogrammed. If you want a monogrammed shirt, please send us either a cheque or Paypal (payment@continuum.uk.net) payment for £25 before 14th July (cheques payable to Continuum) along with your size (S, M, L, XL, XXL or XXXL), and tell us what you want on the shirt (names/nicknames and nothing offensive!) We are also proud to have available 'Liber Newtus' and 'Shreds of Light and Reason', con books exclusive to Continuum and packed full of gaming goodness. 'Liber Newtus' is a collection of Newt Newport's superb HeroQuest scenarios for Glorantha and Mythic Russia, whilst SOLAR deals with the Dara Happan empire of Glorantha and collects together old and new material, updated and refined especially for the con. Each book is £15 and we are accepting pre-orders. Again, cheques or Paypal, and clearly stipulating the titles you want to buy. 'Hearts in Glorantha Issue 1' will also be for sale; the new Glorantha fanzine, covering HeroQuest, Mongoose RuneQuest and general sage advice from Gloranthan luminaries. Issues cost £5. But how about the Continuum super-bundle? Bought individually, all the above goodies would set you back £55/£60 (if you have a monogrammed shirt). Instead, you can pre-order all of the above and receive a £5 discount - so £50 or £55. This is pre-orders only! We'll have your super-bundle ready for collection at registration. Just send us a cheque or Paypal payment by 14th July, clearly marked 'Super-bundle' with your polo shirt details as outlined above. Please CC the Polo Shirt orders to darransimsATgooglemailDOTcom. Size small med large x-l 2xl 3xl 4xl 5xl To Fit 36" 38" 42" 45" 49" 50" 53" 57" There'll be further updates in the next few days, so watch this space!
  18. Just a quick update. The Continuum Programme Book has this content sent so far: - Evilgaz's Players Guide to Convention Gaming. By Evilgaz with cartoons by Darran Sims. - Armagada, a D&D world and setting. By Len Simpson, map by Steff Worthington. - Thorula an adventure location in Glorantha. By Stuart Mousir-Harrison. - Berlin '61 a scenario for D20, GORE or RuneQuest. By C.S. Barnhart and Art by Robert Schoolcraft. - Where's the Dog Bowl? Tongue-in-check GM advice. By Twisted. - Tarot! The Game. By Mike Mason. - “We Will Remember Them” A story By Jane Williams. - The Sword of Batradz A Mythic Russia By Mark Galeotti. The cover is by Jon Hodgson and additional internal art by Darran Sims and Jonny Gray.
  19. We are looking for items to be added into the auction that takes place at the convention on Sunday afternoon. We do get special, unique and rare offered by the Guests of Honour and by the publishers attending Continuum as well as items from those organising the freeforms and other games. Attendees bring items that are of interest to the membership and furious bidding wars often take place and the spectacle is worth seeing. Details on the Continuum auction can be found here - http://www.continuum.uk.net/events/Auction_PreReg_2008.pdf We accepting registration of items that Continuum attendees wish to sell in the auction - just complete the forms (in the above link) and email them before the deadline. The auction will take place at 2pm on the Sunday.
  20. Please be aware that the Freeform GMs asked for these slots and times, if you have issues with the times please take them up with them.
  21. So this is the cover I have done for Newt for the first issue of 'Hearts In Glorantha'. I am pleased with it, especially the letters in the main title as they are my own design from many years ago. I hope to make them into a proper font once I have found a font making software package for the mac. I am by the way the un-official Art Director for HiG so I will be producing more artwork and trying to source new artists for the future issues.
  22. 0 Continuum 2008. John Foster Hall [also known as New Hall], Leicester University. UK. Friday 1st - Monday 4th August 2008. Continuum To all freeform fans, The Continuum Freeform sign up has gone live today 24th June 2008. There are six games (one running twice) for you to play in. Continuum 2008 1) BEST OF THE WURST "It is Friday the 13th of November 1942. You are in Occupied Brittany, in the sleepy town of Quimper, near Brest. In the Castle Quimper Hotel, a Sausage-tasting competition is being arranged, ably supported by eminent Charcutières and the hotel staff. There is a buzz in the air, as a very important guest is anticipated by all present." BASIC INFORMATION A Game for 9 Players Saturday 10am-12pm Entrance Fee £2.00 2) CARRY ON AT CAMP DAVID Carry on at Camp David is set at Camp David, the US President's official rural retreat. President David Nixody has broken off trade negotiations to hold a reception in honour of astronaut Buzz Leapyear who is to be presented with the Congressional Medal of Honor. It is a relaxed, informal occasion, and the speeches are expected to be kept short. BASIC INFORMATION Number of players: 18 (5 female, 11 male, 2 gender-neutral) Saturday 8pm-11pm Entrance Fee £2.00 3) DIAMOND GEEZERS "The Millennium Dome was raided earlier today by an intrepid armed gang, who used a JCB to break in and steal the De Beers diamonds worth an estimated 220 million pounds. They escaped by speedboat up the Thames." "If you have any information as to their whereabouts call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111." The governor Mr Jackson told you to come to meet him early at the lock up, because you're the only one he trusts, but when you got there he was brown bread. Who killed him, who will take over the gang, and most importantly where's the bloody loot? From the same stable as Farewell Father Ted this short and potentially rather silly game gives you the chance to release your inner East London Gangster. Game Duration 1 and 1/2 hours, a must for people wishing to try this hobby. BASIC INFORMATION This game requires 6 Males and 3 Female players Sunday 10am-12pm Entrance Fee £2 4) EVIL HIGH PRIEST II Tired of goody-two-shoes investigators thwarting your plans to bring on a New Dark Age? Get annoyed when smarmy so-called "heroes" break up your sacrificial rites? No more! Because it's time for EVIL HIGH PRIEST – the LARP where you are the enemy! The stars are right! The spheres clash as horror looms. Humanity is doomed. All players are awful horrible villains attending the final Grand Conventicle to determine Earth's fate. Play Wilbur Whateley, the High Priest of Leng, the Shoggoth, or Great Cthulhu himself in a darkly humorous game of the Old One's final triumph! A Game for 31 Players Duration 6 Hours 1-7pm on Saturday Entrance Fee £5.00 5) MURDER AT THE GREYDOG INN The Greydog Inn is heaving. Couples flirt, warriors boast, merchants barter, Lunars and Orlanthi glower at each other over their mead. Just another typical night. But death walks the darkness, and foul murder is uncovered. The clan honour has been tarnished, and the guilty must be found before the killer strikes again... "Murder at the Greydog Inn" is a 16 player, 3 hour freeform for 16 players. Written by Graham Robinson. This event is running twice. Saturday 9am-12pm Sunday 9.30am-12.30pm Entrance Fee £2 6) SURVIVORS OF THE NARONIC February 11, 1893. In the freezing waters of the mid-Atlantic, the survivors of the SS Naronic await their fate. Despite its being less than a year old, their vessel has sunk in mysterious circumstances. The occupants of its lifeboats have little chance of lasting the night. The survivors will be rescued, but by a craft thought destroyed and a Captain believed dead. The legend who claims to be 'no man' has saved them for now, but has set course for an erupting volcano. Sped beneath the seas in a marvel of modern engineering, the SS Naronic's passengers and crew will find themselves in an extraordinary adventure that takes them to an outpost of a vanished civilisation...and perhaps beyond. Survivors of the Naronic is a rip-roaring game of Victorian adventure and intrigue set in a universe slightly more interesting than our own. The game is inspired by the works of Jules Verne, Maurice Leblanc and others. In our more mundane world, the Naronic was carrying a crew of cattlemen. In this reality, however, its passengers are European luminaries: Scientists, Celebrities, Scoundrels and Heroes. All have their secret goals and agendas. There will be Bartitsu. The game last 3-4 Hours approximately. 24 Players Sunday 2pm-6pm Entrance Fee £5 All games can be signed up at Continuum 2008 Please note GM's will inform you of receipt of your sign up. They will be casting in a couple of weeks, you will be notified if you are in a game at that point. Only people who have registered to come to the Convention can sign up for Freeforms, please do not waste time registering for games if you are not registered. Fees are payable on arrival at Continuum and will be added to you bill. Wild,Wild,Wild,Wild West Freeform Please note this is a closed game, invitation only which has been sanctioned as by the Committee as part of the wedding celebrations of Jeff Richard and Claudia Loroff. All invites have been issued. There are no places remaining. Please do not contact Jeff or the Committee about this event, unless you have a personal invite. We know this may annoy some guests, but these are special circumstances agreed by committee.
