  1. Spirts that lose all their MP's can be controlled if the victor has the ability, or else they are cast into the Spirit World. Depending on the cause this could also destroy the Spirit, either way it may require significant effort for the PC to regain their Allied Spirit.

  2. I voted for the scenario books. When I first started RPG's having 32page scenario books was a key driver in which game I played. I wrote my own adventures too but I earned a lot by reading the published ones. Also they were affordable and sustained a prolonged relationship.

The GM pack's scenarios wonderfully illustrate a range of NPC's, homesteads and landscapes. I also think they would provide a great opportunity to allow writers to flesh out some regions without the need for a fully fledged source book.

  3. why does David hang about? His SoI was flee so on his Dex SR he turns and runs. If he was in single combat that is when the opponents would get the free attack (which seems to ignore all SR so a GM may impose limits). The presence of Ella however would prevent a free attack on David as the opponent is engaged. Basically having allies in a fight makes it very easy to withdraw.

Can I just say how fab Dustin is! I can't imagine how many emails he's getting right now and last night is sorted my special order in double quick time! Cheers!

  5. For me the Spirit Plane is just a phrase that describes our perception of what is NOT the mundane world. Shamans, priests, heroes, spirts, sorcerers etc access it in different ways to achieve their own ends. What it is differs from each viewer and there are areas inaccessible by some and not others. The vast majority of the Spirt World may not even be are of the existence a Mundane World or Worlds and are ambivalent toward our wellbeing, assuming that they can even see it.

The Spirit Plane is so alien that each tradition has constructed its own interface to get what they need. Heroquesters are those who venture beyond the known so as to expand their communities knowledge.

  6. I usually start by saying that everyone can cast spells, everyone can swing a sword and everyone can wear armour. Its what you DO that defines your role not what your ARE. Likewise there is no good or or evil and being part of a cult or two is essential. And finally, your character does not exist in isolation - he/she has dependencies, responsibilities and community obligations.

do they realise who they are dealing with? 😉

Does the leatherette edition come in the slipcase? Or would they be individually purchased?

Selfishly disappointed at the delay, but all in all a good call from Chaosium -

  8. The spirit world's geography does not equate the physical world. There are places where they share space and time, but buy and large they are not analogous. To stand in the mundane world and look into the spirit world would overwhelm the senses and disorient the viewer. Second Sight, and a shamans ability only perceives those entities that are present in the mundane world.

  9. I always believed that only the victor could learn the spell, as Vishi defeated the Spirit he learns the spell, he cannot force the spirit to teach is to someone else. As Vishi is only an assistant Shaman he also could not teach the spell. It would be Vishi who would be repairing the weapons.

or isn't there a "bargain" or other non-hostile way to the same end?

This could be played out as a Spirit Combat with the PC waging some other collateral.

  10. I would imagine saying a ring set with rubies and emeralds would would far more Gloranthan if referred to as Moon drops surmounted by Ernalda's tears - and would immediately conjure probable magics in the minds of the PC. Remember that Runes have colour affinities, no reason not to carry this through to gemstones.

As an extension of my original question, it is now Davo and Macca battling and their weapons are prepared,

Davo has a Dex SR of 3, a Siz SR of 2, a weapon SR of 2 and wants to move 4 SRs to close on Macca and then attack.

Macca has a Dex SR of 2, a SIz SR of 1 and  a weapon SR of 3 for a total of 6.  Macca also has a skill of over 100% (or uses a weapon in each hand) and wants to attack twice, (normally once on SR 6 and again on SR 12).

If Davo's actions are calculated as using Move SRs first, then he arrives at Macca on  SR 4.  Macca can then attack on SR 6 and again on SR 12.

If Davo's actions are calculated as Dex SR first, then Move SRs,  he arrives at Macca on SR 7 (4 + 3),  Macca can attack on SR 7 but his second attack would then be on SR 13 which isn't allowed so he only gets to attack once.

    Which way should it go?

I play that character start acting in their DEX SR, so Davo will start closing on SR 3, while Macca prepares for the attack. On SR 7 Davo reaches Macca who can immediately attack. Davo then attacks on SR 11 with Macca can't make a second attack as they is not enough time in the round.

  12. What do they look like in your games?

    P. 179 of the Bestiary: "It cannot leave the soil and looks like a whirlpool or pulse in the earth itself." The description on a Gnomes attack supports this view. But all the images, such as the one where the Ernaldan priestess is summoning a giant gnome on page 180 depict a human/serpent creature.

  13. P164 of the Guide:

"Travel is usually much faster by water. A sailing ship that is coasting with good wind can cover about 75 miles in a typical day of sailing (10 hours). A sailing ship in the open sea can average 150 miles per full day (24 hours). An exceptional day’s sailing can cover 210 miles. River travel is not as fast as open sea. Downriver, vessels commonly make 40 miles in a day; upriver depends on the speed of the river current, typically between 10 and 40 miles in a day."

Initially that was what I thought I would do as well. But I started to put together the Heroquesting material, I realised I needed to have all the "core cults" in one collection. Otherwise it was just making more work.

good call, also helps dilute the 'good guys gods v the bad guys gods' you can get with separate books.

  15. another thing to note is that with other systems unions can be represented by half a dozen or less factors which makes easier to roll out the nameless canon fodder. You can do this with RQ but you are missing out on one of it's key advantages, the uniqueness of individuals. With a little planning an encounter with 6x trolls can become quite memorable by selecting interesting spells, allied spirits (which have personalities too), terrain, equipment and goals. Give all of your NPC's a little motivation, then act accordingly.

Will all variant names (e.g. Uralda for Eiritha) be listed for each deity?

As a reference that would be great, with the caveat that regional differences can be direct, refer to an aspect or simply speculative.

  17. Rune Magic is about channelling the divine power. The same spell from different sources would look, sound, smell and feel different. All Rune spells would be obvious - except of course those that are meant to be hidden.

Spirit magic can range from the mundane to the magnificent, Bladesharp 1 would look very different from Bladesharp 6. Note to that due to the origins of Spirit Magic those spells could be far more varied in colour and texture.

Sorcery is arcane, bound by the will of the caster. Long casting times would make the process obvious but the effects less so in my opinion due to conservation of energy. Personally I think Jack Vance's Dying Earth with regard to Sorcery.

It is up to you - don't make the visual effects too obvious least you negate the usefulness of Detect Magic!

We didn't have time. We didn't even notice there was a problem until half way into the first session. And I dread to think what a new player at a convention game would think when this dawns on them.

I don't see any issue with Vishi. Yanioth is just a poor combatant (but one of my favourites), Nathem is just as bad at melee (basically artillery support and my least favourite PC) and Sorala is only moderately better. There is much more to running a RQ game then how well your character can fight.

  19. He is NOT a front line fighter. In one of the games I ran he was devastating with the dagger-axe so long as he remained in a supporting role. Perhaps the player in question should have picked Vasana or Vostor.
