  1. Now that's a review! Told me everything I needed to know (except for page count*) in a well-written and most engaging manner. Thank you!

Looking at the images of the two main characters, I can't help but wonder... human artist only, or AI (might just be the image resolution and my new glasses playing tricks on me)? No offence intended if the former is the case.

Regardless, your review has sky-rocketed this scenario from a "probably will buy" to a "definitely will buy" (I own all the other "Alone Against" 7E scenarios, but have only played "Flames" and "Dark" thus far).

EDIT: * Found that info on the Drive-Thru RPG website - 104 pages (guessing that includes the covers).

Perfect!  Never listened to a lot of Metallica, but maybe I should start ...

I like their earlier albums, but their new ones not so much. In my opinion, Master of Puppets is their very best (and The Thing That Should Not Be is on that album). While you're at it, give the following track - Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - a listen, too. There might be a theme running between those songs. 😉

  3. "The Thing That Should Not Be," by Metallica.

    Messenger of fear in sight
    Dark deception kills the light
    Hybrid children watch the sea
    Pray for father, roaming free

    Fearless wretch, insanity
He watches, lurking beneath the sea
    Great Old One, forbidden site
He searches, hunter of the shadows is rising
    Immortal
    In madness you dwell

    Crawling Chaos, underground
    Cult has summoned, twisted sound
    Out from ruins once possessed
    Fallen city, living death

    Fearless wretch, insanity
He watches, lurking beneath the sea
    Timeless sleep has been upset
He awakens, hunter of the shadows is rising
    Immortal
    In madness you dwell
    In madness you dwell

    Not dead which eternal lie
    Stranger eons death may die
    Drain you of your sanity
Face the thing that should not be!

    Fearless wretch, insanity
He watches, lurking beneath the sea
    Great Old One, forbidden site
He searches, hunter of the shadows is rising
    Immortal
    In madness you dwell

  4. The product blurb says:

"This new edition of Nameless Horrors contains brand new art, player handouts, and maps for each of its six stand alone adventures."

Doesn't look like there are further enhancements to the scenarios, but that's up to the higher powers to confirm. I'm just happy that it's getting the full colour hardcover treatment, as I never got a chance to pick up the original B+W softcover (and thought secondary market and even POD + shipping prices were out of reach, given my current circumstances).

  5. Distributor's webpage suggests it will be released in Canada on March 15, 2023, which I don't consider a long wait at all. And even if the release date ends up delayed by several months, I'm in no hurry. I understand that buying directly from Chaosium is better for the publisher, but I think it just as important to support Canadian retailers (401 Games is an independent retailer with 2 brick and mortar storefronts/play areas) in these tough times... and as I've been unemployed for a long while, paying extra for shipping from the US is not a luxury I can afford (I don't know if Chaosium ships to Canada via FedEx, but I've been less than thrilled with the "brokerage fees" the latter charge in addition to shipping).

It's a wonder I can still buy RPG products at all.

  6. Saw the unfortunate, but understandable news in the most recent Chaosium newsletter that the company is temporarily suspending the operations of its Canadian fulfillment centre.

That decision only affects direct orders via the Chaosium website, and not the regular distribution of products to Canadian retailers (via Universal Distribution), correct?

Nice! I want my investigators to be too scared to go in... then a session or two later uncover a compelling reason to go in.

That right there is the ticket to ensuring the players feel like they have to go in, even if they're terrified of doing so... and if they don't ---> consequences. Ah, who are we kidding... bad sh*t's going to happen either way, right? But what set of consequences are the worst, from a PC point of view?

  8. Thinking on it some more, Bokrug inhabited a lake that bordered Sarnath in the Dreamlands, and Dreamlands creatures weren't featured in the latest edition of the Malleus Monstrorum. That said, I would expect his (its?) stats to appear in the upcoming 7th ed Dreamlands sourcebook... though I don't think anyone other than Chaosium knows when that's likely to be released.

  9. Looks like the Grand Grimoire is referring you back to the 2006 edition of the Malleus Monstrorum, since that was the only version in print at the time the Grand Grimoire was released (even though the new slipcase edition was released only months afterward... which means they were in the production pipeline around the same time).

Rather disappointing. Hopefully Chaosium will release a downloadable PDF addendum to the MM slipcase edition featuring Bokrug in the near future.
