  1. The percentile Warhammer RPGs are notorious for their whiff factor. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4th edition solved this by subtracting the loser's Succes Level (SL) from the winner's SL in combat and using that as the base of damage. So if you as attacker have an SL of 5, while the defender has an SL of 1, your damage is 4+bonuses. What's best is that minuses count too. If your attack would be failure, but your opponent's defense is an even bigger failure, you still win and deal damage - e.g. if you have -1 SL, but your foe has -9 SL, your damage is 8+bonuses. There is always a winner. While I won't bother converting this to BRP-based games, I will sure as hell use it in earlier editions of WFRP.

  2. For my past character sheets I used Inkscape, which is a free vector graphics app. I dig it, but it's for vector graphics, not laying out documents, thus it only works with single pages - for multiple pages you will need a separate tool to merge them into a single document. Nowadays I tinker with Affinity Publisher, which is a full blown publishing application. It's pretty damn good, dirt cheap compared to Adobe InDesign, and currently on sale. I started learning it for my own d100 hack, but I had to put that project on hold thanks to work and our baby. I did revamp the character sheet I intended for our table for OpenQuest, which I will share after I add some finishing touches.

Neither of them can create form fillable sheets though - you will have to use another application for that. I had some luck with the automated form generators of Foxit and NitroPDF, though they aren't perfect.

  3. Got my OpenQuest rulebook today and had a sudden urge to write about my first impressions and post some pictures on the Vorpal Mace blog. It's a rather pointless and short post, but I didn't want to wait another month or two to get my shit together before I can write a review and say kudos for the honest craftsmanship of the book. Keep up the good work!

    Hi

Can you send me any errors you find to directly via personal message rather than posting it here.

This way I can update the document and make my editor/proofer aware.

At the risk of sounding defensive, there isn't a dedicated errors thread, because it the draft that was sent out to backers was a pre-edited/pre-proofed version.  I do actually have a dedicated editor, who is working with the text now, and proof reader, who will proof it after the document is updated after editorial.

Sure, I'll drop you a PM later. And don't worry, you don't sound defensive - in fact, I'm the one who might be nitpicky, but more eyes never hurt. :)

  5. I started plowing through the document finally. Since I didn't find a dedicated topic for errors, I'll post the first batch I found.

pg. 2. "Dwarfen captain" should be "dwarven captain" for the sake of consistency.
pg. 4. "Not only does this remove the number of fiddly additions and subtractions, players have to do, but it means that when modifiers are meaningful and have a significant effect on play." There is no need for comma after "subtractions", and the second part of the sentence doesn't need that "when".
pg. 5. I would add to the "A Set of Polyhedral Dice" section a mention of d10s numbered by tens.
pg. 6. "Character generation" is a title, thus should be "Character Generation".
pg. 7. The sentence "Nope" lacks period.

Major Wounds get mentioned several times in the book (pg. 6. How To Use This Book, pg. 90. Healing, pg. 131. Fear Effects, pg. 147. Casting Time, pg. 182. Bloodweed stat block), but the optional rule has been thrown out as far as I know.

Print will be Print on Demand, with the option of me sending it to you directly. I may if the numbers warrant it look into doing a print run.

The book will be black and white through out.

So basically shipping won't cost me an arm and leg. That's good news! Thanks for the answers. :)

  7. Hello! I'd have a few questions which I couldn't find answers for on the blog or in this topic. :)

Will we get an option for working from single pool of skill points at character creation, or it's still by categories?

Will skills based on a single characteristic still start at 10 + characteristic value, or will they get something else (eg. 2 x characteristic)?

Where will be the new eidition printed? Will it have a normal print run, or print on demand, or both?

And finally: will the magenta/pink titles and boxes remain? :D
