My hobby shop hasn't had one of these ever. Anybody know where one can be acquired for a less-than-ruinous price?

I don’t know what country you’re in (I’m in Canada) but ultimately I had to sign up to a couple of “Notify me when available” notices from a couple different Canadian online shops to get one. I had to wait a bit, but pounced on the first one that became available. I didn’t buy direct from Chaosium only because I was trying to keep the shipping cost down and didn’t necessarily need the PDF.

The complicated 7e rules basically boil down to:

    • -If you have skill 60%+: roll to hit twice (the second time with a penalty die). Each success = three bullets hitting
    • -For skill 40% to 59%: roll to hit thrice (2nd roll w/penalty die, 3rd with two penalty dice). Each success =  two hits
    • -For skill below 40%: you probably shouldn't bother with auto-fire

In practice though, PC's typically aren't very skilled in automatic weapons, and attacks with penalty dice are unlikely to hit, so I just have PC's:

    • make one roll (but use 10 rounds) and treat a success as two hits

That’s a succinct, easy to follow guideline. 🙂

I had it come up in my first session of Two-Headed Serpent last week. It's actually pretty fast and easy at the table. Didn't take much longer than anyone else's turn and the PC wasted two mooks right away.

I love the “Mook” concept in Pulp Cthulhu.

    @GrimmshadeYes, the maneuvers are excellent!

@ClosterphobiaI haven't had the occasion to use the automatic fire rules yet, but I have heard similar concerns.  I should probably do a mock combat with them sometime and see how they play out.

That’s what I did, sat here with my son for an hour and “tested” out the various methods of semi / automatic fire. Buuuuut, having said that, it hasn’t even come up in the past couple years of play so it’s pretty much out of my head. I found a cheat sheet online (from somewhere I can’t recall) and keep it nearby just in case.

"Another couple of titles I need to mention are Gaslight and Dreamlands for Call of Cthulhu 7th edition. Both of those settings are getting the full color treatment and should also be going into final manuscript form soon. Each of those would also feature a boxed Starter set as your entry point into those realms of the Mythos."

I have yet to read the blog post, but you’ve already given the best news.

Ya, trying to watch play through s of Masks of Nyarlathotep is painful.

It sure can be. I’ve only been checking out CoC actual plays for a couple years at most, primarily via podcast. I tend to skip the “Masks” games simply because so many are doing it, I’d rather latch onto something a bit shorter and more unique. Just my opinion though, and I’m sure there are a few great Masks actual plays out there in the world that many are enjoying.

I'm sorry to confess that the only book partially authored by Greg Stafford in my vast library is the BRP core book.

I would like to pick up Pendragon someday. Don't think I'm quite as interested in Runequest/Glorantha, in spite of all the great things I've heard about them.

Pendragon has piqued my interest as well. Will probably end up buying a few of the books, even if I don’t get a chance to run any of the games. (I’m sure that’s a familiar path for many of us here.)

  8. This looks great. I was mulling over the PDF, but after seeing the guts of the book the hard copy + PDF may be the way to go. I wish another member of my regular gaming group would run a CoC scenario, even just once, so I could play something as fun (horror-based) as this. 😄 I’m the CoC / D&D 5e GM for our regular crew, so for now am only a player in a campaign for The One Ring and a (VERY) occasional Fall Of Delta Green game. That aside, thanks again for the great review.

In my opinion, Carl Sargent - the author of Night Below - was the best writer TSR/WotC ever had.

I own but have never actually run Night Below, but other great products of Sargent's (all for the AD&D 2e era) are:

    . Monster Mythology

. Greyhawk: From the Ashes boxed set

    . Greyhawk: The Marklands

    . Greyhawk: Iuz the Evil

. Greyhawk: Ivid the Undying (unpublished except for excerpts in Dragon magazine, but the complete book is widely available on the net... if I'm not mistaken, TSR themselves authorized its release back in the day)

Many grognards don't like what Sargent did to the Greyhawk timeline, but I think the grittiness and historical/political cohesiveness he brought to the setting are second to none. Just as importantly, what he wrote was a pleasure to read, which I can't say is true of all D&D material, regardless of era.

I look forward to seeing how you adapt the adventure to CoC. Many of the monsters in Night Below are great candidates for - and were obviously themselves inspired by - the Cthulhu mythos.

These were the best products for 2e, Sargent is my personal favourite for D&D supplements. My friends and I still use these today for our 4e / 5e campaigns today and the books are a treat to read.

FYI, they are not tarot size. They are significantly larger than the other Keeper decks, so the sleeves I bought don't even come close to fitting. I'm not going to complain about nice large cards, but just wanted to let you know the size that you reported was not accurate.

I initially didn’t have much interest in the cards but after seeing the physical size of them in your video they’ve been added to the “must purchase” list. They look great. Did you have any luck sourcing sleeves?

  11. I think I’m goign to hold off until the new edition comes out in 2 - 3 years. I’m sure the POD version will be great, but I just bought Harlem Unbound and will nab Malleus Monstrorum  when it’s available in hardcover, and man I still need to eat. :) There’s a lot of books out now on my wish list, I’ll never “catch up.”
