The ability to speak to the examiner is irrelevant.  If I, or another player, ever run a mute PC (this thread gave me that idea!) they would have no problem initiating into a cult.

If this player has learned to speak (because mute persons do speak, if they have learned a proper language) and if the priest can understand them, they will have no problem initiating into a cult. That being said, there are undoubtedly initiations that do not involve questions and answers and oaths pronounced aloud. But I can't see an awakened snail (to use an example from @French Desperate WindChild) passing the initiation tests at Lhankor Mhy's libraries ! 😁

    Thanks. I don't (yet) own the W&E book !

Awakened animals can talk (25%). I would assume that goes for other sapient animals as well

In terms of playability, I think it's a good decision. But from a more 'realistic' point of view (if that word has any meaning in this context), I don't think an awakened animal speaks any language at all, unless it is taught one. How could a barely awakened Alynx speak Sartarite, even at 25%?

but, for me, an awakened beast is like any other sentient individual. Is a troll able to be initiate ? an elf ? a human ? a griffin ?

What is the difference ?  for me there is none 🙂

Can an alynx, a bat or a dog talk ? Can they speak any language undetstandable by the common priests of a cult? I don't think so (though there are known exceptions, such the Zola Fel priest who can certainly understand some animals of the River).

An awakened animal should be able to communicate spirit-to-spirit. Even in this situation, I think that communication would be through images, sensations, feelings, and not through words. Would this be enough to pass the tests for initiation into a cult? It's doubtful, in most cases.

  4. The question may well be, not whether or not to be "tolerant" of this kind of omission, but whether or not it would create an interesting story of "punishing" the adventurers for not keeping their promise. It may involve the players more in their characters and the world, or they may find it unfair. So you need to know them well.

One of the things I really liked in this reboot of Glorantha is that you really did not need to go hunting old sources (though I still like doing it), as there is a solid rock foundation in the Guide to Glorantha and the Gloranthan sourcebook. Now a small crack has appeared in that foundation, and for a reason that honestly I find weak, as a work in print should trump an unpublished note, at least while it remains official.

From a rational point of view, you're right. But Glorantha is also and above all a story of friendship and loyalty to its creator. This can lead to some contradictions that trouble our brains but I think our hearts understand that they are less important than the loyalty to what Greg Stafford gave us.

  6. Thank you all for these rich and diverse suggestions!

For the moment, I get the following ideas:

    • Children should only participate in certain celebrations of Sacred Time, those that are safe for the participants, and in particular those that open and close a cycle. For example, the departure and return of the Lightbringers.
    • There are activities for children which allow them, often in the form of a game, to learn about and honour the gods, both those who protect the clan and those who are hostile to it.
    • Among the children, a distinction can undoubtedly be made between those who are older and close to the time of their initiation into adulthood, and those who are younger. The former, in preparation for their initiation, may participate in certain rituals that were forbidden to them in previous years.
    • Most often, the children are grouped together under the supervision of a few minders who tell them what is going on that they cannot see and who supervise the day's 'games

It would be interesting to 'build' an orlanthi myth about how, during the Great Darkness for example, Grandfather or Grandmother or the Good Warrior kept the children close to the hearth and occupied them while outside the Enemies threatened all life. This would allow the minders to participate in the Sacred Time in the same way as other adults, even if they did not take part in the rituals performed in the sacred area.

    Perhaps such myth already exists.

  7. I wonder what children do during Sacred Time in a typical Sartarite clan. Are they allowed to participate to the rituals ? Are they spectators, outside of the sacred area ? Do they stay "at home", the elders taking care of the younger ?

I would be surprised children were allowed to participate to the re-enactment of Myths. Can they even give magic points to the community ? (Do they even have magic points ?)

I read this thread and found it very useful about what happens during Sacred Time, the meaning of this season in the Gloranthan year, the rituals and the ceremonies performed day by day. In this thread, @Bohemond makes a wonderful suggestion related to children :

    Quote

Many clans hold a special Voria Hunt on Day 1 to commemorate Voria's appearance on Flower Day--so the children search for toys and sweets and the first child to find where the Voria Priestess is hiding (or the clan's carved Voria Flower treasure) is the Spring Child and plays a role in the Sea Season ceremonies that year.

I ask this question because I want to tell my players the story of their childhood.

Here's the current .pdf of corrections. Note that this is not every typo or grammatical/consistency error. These are just the fixes for things that might hinder gameplay in some fashion or cause some confusion.

I bought the Starter Set from Chaosium site. Will the .pdf be updated ?

He is a big reason why the Orlanthi of Sartar really don't resemble the Orlanthi of King of Dragon Pass or Thunder Rebels.

In what way do they differ ?

The God Learners podcast recently broke news of a Culbrea RQG book, written by some of the Beer With Teeth crew, that's in the process of being submitted to Chaosium - the final MS is probably getting handed over this week.

    Great news !

I have been working for some time on the Elk clan as a good place to begin a campaign for new characters. I can't wait to see what you say about the Culbrea tribe.

However, Movement Week of Stormseason is the high holy day of Orlanth, and time for initiation into manhood, so there may well be large gathering then anyway that a Tribal Assembly would fit with.

I rather tought that the adult initiation took place at "clan level".

Didn't Sartar create flying, air-breathing fish?

    Yes, he did.

"His second miracle was when he caused some small, silver fish from a stream to grow wings and other parts and live in the air. From more than a foot away they appeared to be insects, and they served as familiars to Sartar." (KoS).

Porter: Orngerin Holdfast, of the Greenhaft

    Caster: Minaryth Purple, of Jonstown
Healer: Ernaldesta the Vigorous, of the Elkenval

I may misinterpret your bold prints, jajagappa, but the Greenhaft clan no longer belongs to Culbrea tribe in these times (see Coming Storm, p. 94). On the contrary, the Elk clan, settled in Elkenvale, is one of the Culbrea's, as far as I know.
