Well, the passenger is a baboon so I guess they will need to go down the 'mounted infantry' route.

Who wouldn’t want a baboon dragoon?

  2. One thing I'd lean into is his charisma- while I agree with the suggestions that he'd often be distracted and focusing on things outside of the players' ken, I'd imagine that when he pays attention to you it would be like staring at the sun. He clearly has a personal magnetism that he uses to convince otherwise fractious Praxians, Orlanthi, and others to come along on his mad adventures.

  3. Probably makes sense to cap the bow skill at the LOWER of the firer and the rider's Ride skill- an inexperienced rider would make it extra bumpy, while an inexperienced passenger would just be bouncing around. Of course many Praxians or Pentans have ride skills as good if not better than their weapon skills, so not much of an issue for them, but would hamper others.

That's why the preferred platform for missile (and magical) troops outside of people born on their mounts is the chariot. Much smoother ride.

Conceivably, appointing a Red Emperor has, in the light of Seven Wanes' experience, turned out to be a mistake

I always thought appointing an Emperor was mostly to keep the Dara Happans in line- but perhaps it’s precisely that tie to Yelm that mucks everything up.

Jar-eel is an exception to this

Jar-Eel always struck me as almost more of an incarnation of the Red Goddess than an independent agent- born after generations of a careful breeding project, allows the Red Goddess to have more direct influence than other Gods usually do. But as @Nick Brooke points out, this does fail at a critical moment, although Jar-Eel has had decades of exemplary service before then.

  5. Perhaps it’s because they’ve awoken their Hero Soul, perhaps it’s because they are worshipped, or maybe it’s just that most of them are Illuminated, but Heroes in Glorantha often seem to transcend- or even transgress against- their original Cult. Delecti, Ralzakark, Harrek, even Argrath, seem much more driven by their own designs than any God they used to follow.

spirit magic all come from the same source

Spirit magic is quite different in RQ:G- you’re not learning a spell, you are making a connection with a spirit that you then use to impact the material world (see https://wellofdaliath.chaosium.com/magic-systems-i/ ). That’s why your CHA is the limit- you can only befriend so many spirits. And I find it perfectly reasonable that the more spirit helpers you have hanging around, the less you can concentrate on casting sorcerous spells (which involves the direct manipulation of runes, as opposed to divine magic where you are channeling the power of your god).

Now, it you’re a sorcerer and want to cast lots of spirit magic, you do it the right way- dominate a bunch of spirits that know spirit magic and shove them in binding to do your bidding on command.

  7. The page count (and number of cults) has significantly increased from the Cults preview volumes at the time the Red Book was published until now; it’s no surprise there are new spells to match. The only question is whether there will be a second edition of The Red Book once the Cults volumes are done that contains all the new spells- and whether those of us who bought the PDF will be able to download the updated version for free, or have buy a new one like for the updated Sourcebook.

Why would they need to specify not being able to attack or parry while standing up, if you can get up before anything like that would likely occur?

I don’t see a conflict- if someone can strike you during the 3 SR it takes you to stand up, you can’t parry or dodge. If it takes them longer, you can (see also that exact example in the Cormac saga excerpt).

Looking through the RQ 1,2,3 and G rules, that paragraph in RQ3 page 47 on performing a non combat action was the only one I could find that explicitly referenced standing up. There’s also an example on page 47 of Cormac standing up and drawing his hatchet which only takes 3 SR for both actions.

Overall, I like @DreadDomain’s suggestion- it takes 3 SR (5 in RQ 2/G) to stand up if you do it quickly but can’t defend, or a full round to do cautiously while being able to dodge or parry.

variant of the Arming of Orlanth

Clearly the Arming of Orlanth is a Heroic ability that lets you grow additional arms, so that you can wield all four magical weapons at once.

What if someone else comes along and heals the body?

Lucky Shaman, their spirit can rejoin their healed body without needing to spend POW. You might rule it takes at least 1 permanent POW.

    25 minutes ago, Shiningbrow said:

couldn't they just cast a Heal Body instead?

Sure- although I'd rule the rune points used in either Heal Body are Heal Wound are permanently lost.

RuneQuest One Page Character Sheet - Javascript app for Character Creation

Note that this is more intended to be a live character sheet for use in play- you can add buffs, make rolls, track HP, etc. There's a live version you can try out here https://platypus.pepperfish.net/~vivek/glorantha/glorantha-character.html?CHAR-NAME - data is saved locally in your browser by CHAR-NAME.

  12. There's also the set of tools at https://basicroleplaying.net/rqg/ -

Are we making characters wrong (the pregens seem tougher)?

Just to repeat an earlier note, the pregens both start with high stats (which boost all skills thanks to skill modifiers), and were also created by people familiar with the system who knew which skills to boost. With the exception of a few things like Brother Monkey, they can all be created by the rules- @PhilHibbs has a great thread where he goes through them one by one, even loading them into his excellent Google character sheet for completeness.

I also realised that there weren't any repositories that had links to tools and also had data and code people could use to build their own tools.

That would be fabulous- in addition to the Family History generator, there are a few others I've seen like this one page character sheet. The closest existing repository is arguable the collection of character sheets on the fandom wiki- https://runequest-glorantha.fandom.com/wiki/Character_Sheets_and_Forms .

Remember that this is all spirit combat, the Humakti isn't using their sword skill, but their spirit combat.

That seems to be contradicted by both the core rules- "The physical attack is resolved normally, but opposed by the spirit’s Spirit Combat skill." and the Well clarification- "The player rolls the adventurers relevant weapon ability (with augments, magical bonuses, etc) and checks the result using that score for critical, special, success, fail, miss, fumble. If the adventurers weapon ability or the spirit’s Spirit Combat score is over 100%, reductions occur as normal." (bold added for emphasis)

He has a Greatsword, which has the ‘double damage after armour’ Gift

As a simple fix, you could house rule this only applies to physical targets, not spirits.

Natural skill over 100% and much better than the spirit(s)? Split the attack for even more.

This works in physical combat, where even a parried blow can smash through, but not in spirit combat where if you both succeed, no damage is done. There's no penalty to multiple spirit combat defence rolls, unlike parries, so better to reduce their skill than try twice at a lower chance (e.g. 120% vs 80% becomes 100 vs 60, much better than 2x 60 vs 80).

Most lies could be revealed with a Divination.

Which is fitting, since both cost Rune points (assuming your God would be familiar with the subject of the Lie. Of course, impacted people wouldn't have any reason to doubt the Lie themselves and cast Divination, and if you use it for an immediate benefit like MPs revealing the truth wouldn't strip that benefit.
