Lloyd Dupont
For my Master of Orion setting I plan to have some cultist that want to summon Antarian to rain fire and destruction on their world... Now I was wondering, this seem nihilistic, self destructive, doomed and pointless... I know why the head of the cult want to do it.. but I am not sure it makes sense it gather many followers... Antarians don't distribute favor much if at all.... Then I thought, I know who to ask about this conundrum! Our Cult specialist CoC GMs! So, what's the point of being a cultist? Why are there cultists at all?! 😮
Dethstrok9
It could be a number of different things, but in most cases for me it is a fanatical or extremist religion. They believe this is their way to heaven or favor with their god or patron. The leader has to be charismatic enough to gain the followers trust, or they will have been show proof of the "god's" existence. Or the leader or god could be using any form of mind control or blackmail. Or the cultists all just have very low self esteem and wish to die. Or they think very little of their fellow man and decided the world deserves to burn. Lloyd Dupont
Well.. I did ponder that a bit.. (after seeing a scifi setting with demons and sorcery) but, for now, I don't think I am going that route... my scifi would be more or less atheistic... (so am I and my players..) Although... I got another idea while googling (at work, oops) - many could be lied too... - but a few powerful member will need more than simple lies.. (like head of industries..) but come to think of it.. the head of the cult can do more than simple lie.. (he has Antarian tech, including communication devices to Antarian planet, it can polymorph)... Edited May 1, 2020 by Lloyd Dupont

KarlF
Yep I think that idea of "many could be lied to" is a good one - there are lots of naive or simply too trusting people who could be swayed to join in nefarious plans without realising what they've got themselves into. This is a key plot line in the Walker in the Wastes campaign, with many of the cultists seeing it as just an alternative religion (obviously they do not know of or join in the more extreme rites conducted by the senior members). If the PCs treat them all as evil minions they are going to end up murdering a whole lot of "innocents".
