Military Background for 1920s PC Veterans

Hi Everyone, wanted to run this by you and get some feedback if you‘d be so kind. Can you take a look at the uploaded file and let me know what you think?

Here’s what I have. For those choosing a military occupation for their PC, this will provide historical 1920s detail so one can say, “I was in H Company, 2nd Battalion, 104th Infantry Regiment in the 26th Infantry Division and fought at Chateau-Thierry and Soissons”. (GMs can also use it for NPC backgrounds).

My goal is to make it easy for a player to flesh out a historical military background. And to provide anchor bits of information the players can use to research more if they wish.

I have a lot written and use it for my group so I thought I’d share it. Let me know if you’d like to see more. If so, is it too much history, too much detail or not enough detail, change it or add, etc?

I’m going to be adding to it, like the rest of the divisions in the AEF, which will be shorter than those provided here. Then also units from other wars, ie, the Banana Wars, Philippines, China, AEF North Russia, then some Allied units, CEF, BEF, Czech Legion, White Russians… maybe not in that order,  it’ll be a work in progress.

Anyway, here are the first 3 units with some general WW1 info and a TOE. These units are a little longer because they have a more colorful background.

 Thx, Gil

The netflix show Peaky Blinders is set in Burmingham 1919 and several of the characters are Great War veterans. It's interesting to see that version of things like taking 'work' back from women, soldiers respecting each other even if enemies,  and PTSD from trench warfare and the battle of the somme.

The Show, incidentally, is about a crime family of British gangsters. Good drama and period piece.

Cool, i'll have to check it out. BTW, i just uploaded an updated version. I added the rest of the 2nd division, then also added the 77th, 82nd and 90th divisions. Also edited the Marine brigade and the 42nd division (added Medal of Honor recipients, the PCs could have known them). I think next i'll added some aerodrome and naval info for those who are sailors or in the air services, naval or army... (there's no USAF at this time).

@10baseT I know its been 6 years, but any work on the updates for other units for this?

One thing iirc from high school history when we covered the Great War, you also had US citizens who enlisted to fight with other countries, such as Herbert West serving with a Canadian Detachment or Indiana Jones serving under the Belgian Army (The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles TV Show from the 1990's). So there were other ways for a US citizen to serve in the Great War before the US entered the conflict.

@EldorfDragonsbane Hi Eldorf, sorry for the delay and thank you for the question. Yes, i've been working on this and have a lot more. I've been spec'ing out the planes (top planes from the major players), tanks and a few armored cars. Here's the FT17 tank for example, pasted below, which spec-wise may still change a little, some things i'm still solidifying on that. (I still want to flesh out damaging certain internal components on the tanks.) I've put together some dog fighting rules with advantage based on your plane vs you're opponents. Like the Fokker scourge happened because the Fokker was the superior plane for that period.

I added civilian organizations and their professions/backgrounds. Those orgs being The American Red Cross, Salvation Army, American Field Services/AFS, American Fund for French Wounded/AFFW, and the YMCA. These allowed civilians to work in the war and many helping the allies. The AFFW specifically worked with the French. You're right, Americans fought with other countries like the Canadians or Lafayette Escadrille. I didnt add those because i'm unfamiliar with those unit TOEs. Maybe I can add the unit names.

I also spec'd out specific WW1 weapons like the 37mm Puteaux and the Vivien Bessiers grenade launcher. Mmm, I also spec'd a subhunter... this was mainly for an Innsmouth scenario but it should be included here as well. (our listening technology and depth charges are a real eye opening surprise to the Deep Ones lol, and a great initial advantage for us... like a subhunter scourge). I've added optional rules to make things a little more realistic but still keeping it easy (dont want to muddy or over complicate). Thank you for the interest, i'll give this more focus now!! And if you have any questions, please dont hesitate to ask. Thanks, Gil
