Running Horror on the Orient Express
EldorfDragonsbane replied to Greypathos's topic in Call of Cthulhu
Have plenty of backup investigators ready. This campaign along with the likes of Masks of Nyarlathotep can and will/has killed/driven insane many a party of investigators. Luckily you could have it where the new investigators are friends/family/colleagues of the deceased/insane investigator(s) who were called in to help arrange for the body(s) to be shipped back home/care for the insane investigator(s) at an asylum. Also remember you dont have to run every scenario in the campaign there are many that are optional.- 2 replies

Any ideas for alternative damage systems for CoC?
EldorfDragonsbane replied to KarlF's topic in Call of Cthulhu
I may be misremembering but I thought I seen something over on Drivethru RPG under the Miskatonic Repository. IIRC its called Visceral and Emotional Damage. -
Looks good so far. Only have skimmed through it, havent done an indepth read through yet. Love the Deck Plans for the SS Champagne. I am already planning on getting them printed on a large format printer as possibly 18x24s or 24x30s for use on the table for other campaigns/scenarios where the investigators are traveling on a liner. Also love the new "monster" it has a great little twist to it that I am not going to spoil. Bwahahahahahahahaha Can't wait to fully read though this and run it for my players. REMEMBER EVERYONE: When buying from Chaosium, if you get the physical copy, you get a free copy of it as PDF so you can instantly start reading though and planning your sessions.

Version 3 is a 7th ed scenario/at least has 7th ed stats. Totally forgot I had it in my Drivethru RPG library, or I would have mentioned it along with the Blasphemous Tome scenario I mentioned above.

IIRC there might have been a scenario or two for the previous CoC editions, one of which was a Dreamlands scenario, though I may be misremembering. There is one 7th ed scenario that I do recall "The Worship of Atlach-Nacha", found in The Unspeakable Oath #25. It can be downloaded as a pdf or purchased as a print copy here https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/248043

Luck, Spending Luck, and POW in CoC / BRP
EldorfDragonsbane replied to Myrmidont's topic in Call of Cthulhu
I like having luck as a separate score. You could have a character with a real high POW score but low Luck score or a low POW score and a high Luck score. Think of it this way just because John Doe had a POW of 90 and 18 MP doesnt mean he is going to be a individual with a lot of luck. He might be starting off with 30 luck points and that has to last him though the scenario, does he burn it to improve a roll or two or keep it in case he has to make a luck roll? Or how about Bill Blank he is a character with a low POW score of 40 but his luck is 75, with that 75 luck he has more opportunity to pass that luck roll to see if there's rope in the trunk/boot of the car that he just stole to pull John Doe out of the pit he fell into, or he might spend an 15 luck points to turn that failed locksmith roll into a success so he can pick the lock and escape the cage Cultist Craig locked him in, which in this case spending that 15 points of luck isn't as big of an issue as it would have been for John Doe if he had to spend those 15 points. Now when it comes to learing and casting spells, John has the advantage both in MP and in SAN, a spell that requires say 5 MP and cost 3 SAN is less of an impact to him then it would be to Bill (John goes from 18 MP to 13MP and SAN 90 to SAN 87 when Bill goes from 8 MP to 3MP and 40 SAN to 37 SAN, for this example we are going to assume both John and Bill have their full starting MP and SAN, though in all likely hood they wouldn't have the full starting SAN). Here as you can see while John doesn't have the luck that Bill had he does have the advantage of the better MP and SAN, to me this helps offset the fact he isn't as "lucky" as his buddy Bill. -
Military Background for 1920s PC Veterans
EldorfDragonsbane replied to 10baseT's topic in Call of Cthulhu
@10baseT I know its been 6 years, but any work on the updates for other units for this? One thing iirc from high school history when we covered the Great War, you also had US citizens who enlisted to fight with other countries, such as Herbert West serving with a Canadian Detachment or Indiana Jones serving under the Belgian Army (The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles TV Show from the 1990's). So there were other ways for a US citizen to serve in the Great War before the US entered the conflict. -
Christmas looks to be coming a little early this year for all of use good little cultists. October has the Order of the Stone (along with the projected fulfillment of the Sassoon Files 2nd ed Kickstarter), and now this in November. What other surprises are in store for us? The Arkham scenarios if No Time to Scream isn't them? Gaslight Cthulhu? Cthulhu Britannica re-release (since Chaosium now owns it)? The next Lovecraft Country sourcebook??? Seriously cant wait to see what these scenarios are along with the Order of the Stone scenarios.

Coming in October for Call of Cthulhu: The Order of the Stone
EldorfDragonsbane replied to MOB's topic in Call of Cthulhu
Looks like Octobers on track to be a great month for Call of Cthulhu. This is slated for release plus there is also the Sons of Singularity's Sassoon Files 2nd Edition Kickstarter which has a October 2024 estimated delivery. Hopefully we will also be getting the next Lovecraft Country sourcebook be it Kingsport, Dunwich or Innsmouth soon too. -
New licensed Call of Cthulhu Kickstarter: the Sassoon Files
EldorfDragonsbane replied to MOB's topic in Call of Cthulhu
Less then 8 hours to back this. Luckily its already reached the funded mark along with a couple of the stretch goals. Glad I was able to back this, cant wait to see how the physical props such as the Bagua Battle Mat and the Fengshui Mirror look in real life. -
SIZ Characteristic and Stealth Penalty
EldorfDragonsbane replied to ColoradoCthulhu's topic in Call of Cthulhu
Another thing to note about SIZ and Stealth is look at the movies, a big guy like Lurch from the Addams Family actually moves around quite quietly and can startle people when he comes up behind them without knowing, same goes for some of your movie bad guys like Michael Meyers in the Halloween movies or Jason Vorhees in the Friday the 13th series (remember for the first one though it was his mom that was the killer not him). These movie baddies while of a larger more muscular/taller build actually move pretty stealthily, coming upon their victims with out the victims realizing it until its too late, even when the ones who see them coming and run are surprised when they think they are safe and then BOOM theres the killer. I actually knew a guy I worked with at one time, a good 6ft 5in and 350+lbs, he moved like a cat, if you didnt see him coming he could easily startle you buy walkign up behind you, and he wasnt even trying to be stealthy. -
I typically have then use persuade if they are trying to tell a convincing lie, as they are trying to persuade the other party that what they are saying is true. Another possible skill would be Charm though for that you would probably need more then a few minutes to charm the person into believing the lie.
