One of Dormal's companions was a troll, and "stole" the secret that had helped discover and that was freely given to everyone on the coasts, however despicable they may have been (Alatan scum, Vadeli, cannibalistic Yggites).

I thought that was the case, but couldn't remember. Thanks.

Trying to compare the new dwarves to RQ2 . Any thoughts?

RQ2 had Flintnail as a Mostali heresy and Mostali dwarves in their mountains. RQG has the same.

The only difference is that the Mostali have been greatly expanded on.

    Now my head hurts!  😵

I prefer simple tactical movement systems.  "Your character moves X hexes per combat round, period.  You can move half of that and still attack."

So do I. Anything else is just too much hassle for me.

  4. I played a Duck Trickster in our Runemasters game at Continuum 2018. He disguised the Humakti Ducks and Storm Bull Duck as corpses, to hide them from the Crimson Drake, but they flew off to fight it, when the Humakti saw the Storm Bull as a flying corpse, they attacked him, so he fought back and all 3 died in the combat. I was so proud.

Possibility 2. Or was it Zistor? Zazistor? The Machine God is destroyed in 917 but seems to fit the role of the Devil better than the EWF. Orlanth himself is credited with the destruction of the Machine God, but presumably this was actually achieved by some Orlanthi hero or collection thereof.

Possibility 3. Was the Devil a product of the God Learners? Certainly Aringor is the best candidate for the Hero of the Age, since he performed the LBQ to defeat the God Learners. So who took the role of Wakboth?

Whoever Aringor fought was the Devil, as the best way to defeat the Devil is through the LBQ.

  6. I'd do what David said and have a Corruption breakout for every corrupting magic Ability, increasing it with every corruption. How it affects the PC depends on what effects you want it to have in the game.

Perhaps this should be in the Heroquest section, since it's partly a question about HQ mechanics. But here goes.

One element of the cult of Vinga that used to be emphasized what that some women joined the cult temporarily to avenge violence (such as the killing of their husband), and that dying the hair red was part of the process. What is the current thinking on how that works? Does the ritual hair dying allow a women to replace her Earth rune (her soul) with an Air rune? Does she keep her other runes, or can those be swapped for Orlanth/Vinga runes too? It seems to me that this would produce some odd dynamics, such as a women with Air, Harmony, and Life.

I just say that an Ernaldan who does this can replace Earth with Air/Storm and Life/Fertility with Death, if she wants. If she then returns to Ernalda, I just let the runes revert back, if that's what she wants.

EWF tried to manifest a dragon from the land, geography was important to their great dragon project. Perhaps the EWF effort was an imperfect attempt to replicate what Dragonewts do instinctively. This could mean the location of the nests critically important, shifting the nest would potentially undo centuries of painstaking magical effort.

My personal opinion is that the Dragonewt Cities were the equivalent of the Great Dragon's Chakras.

So a bunch of spells in RQ2 had a hard 4 point limit (Bladesharp, Protection, etc). This has been removed ever since RQ3. Is this a good thing?

In my opinion, it is a good thing.

Don't forget that not all Battle Magic was capped in RQ2. Healing, Xenohealing, Countermagic, Dispel Magic and Detection Blank were uncapped, as I recall. It was mainly combat spells that were capped, spells like Bludgeon, Bladesharp, Protection, Parry, Ironhand, Shimmer and Spirit Shield, although I am not so sure about Spirit Shield.

Strike and Fumble are a great combination, RQG doesn't have the latter unfortunately.

    Yet.

It is a Thed spell, so I assume will be in the "Chaos Gods" book for NPCs.

That annoys me a bit, as any PCs in a Gloranthan game might worship 6 cults, perhaps, but their NPC opponents might worship any number of cults, especially Chaos Cults, so I really would prefer the Chaos Cults before PC Cults.

Fun jokes notwithstanding, pondering whether the Argan Argar Atlas might be a Gloranthan document that reflects the sum total of the Chain Gang's knowledge of the surface world makes me think back to the obscure "frightening armada of pitch-black ships crewed entirely by trolls" the OOO was once said to have launched to consolidate his post-EWF empire.

Presumably the archaic troll maritime tradition (Robber being a darkness entity, after all) remains intact but their continued absence from the Ship Types list reveals that they don't sail much any more. Their original design might've been the ancestor of the modern Kethaelan trireme -- I'm sure experts have already weighed in.

Is there still room for troll navies Since Time? When did they sail and where did they go? (Was the OOO a party to the conspiracy against EWF and received the protectorate over the north and west as his reward?) Did they (re)establish communication with the Pamaltelan cousins?

The Black Galleys do roam the seas, but I can't find the reference. Arkati Trolls could steal the Open Seas spell from Dormal, or some Trolls could join Dormal's Cult. The Troll Boat cult is Kogag, rather than Robber, as Robber is a goddess who delights in dragging ships to the bottom of the sea.

I think I read somewhere that Trolls started trading with the trolls of Jrustela soon after the Opening. They would use the Kogagi trolls.

here do sea trolls come from? They're apparently omnipresent in the East Isles and Jrustela if the Bestiary can be believed.

They were corrupted by Pocharngo, in the same way that cave Trolls were, but at different times.

I just thought of something.  The Open Seas ritual became obsolete with the Cradle.  Think about it.  There was no Dormal initiate on the cradle, and no Dormal shrine, and subsequently, rumor has it that ships started sailing without needing the Open Seas Ritual at all (though people still perform it, just to be certain).  So the question becomes, how did the Cradle break the Closing?

Not really. The Cradle was probably affected by the Closing, as it was sucked into Magasta's Pool.

The Ship Raising, or the Return of the Boat Planet is what stopped the Open Seas spell from being required. Dormali will claim that it is still required, though, as it gives them a reason for being, even though Dormal is the Helmsman of the Boat Planet.

How do Orthdox, monotheistic Malkioni like the Rokari, and I guess the Hrestoli deal with Dormal's cult? Not to mention the atheist Brithini of Arolanit (to the extent that they have their own sailors at all)?

In Old Glorantha, Dormal could be accessed as a Malkioni Saint, but I am not sure if that applies in New Glorantha.

In any case, Open Seas is a sorcery ritual, so Malkioni might be able to learn it.

If not, they can hire Dormali.

So it is still necessary for there to be Dormal initiate who knows the opening ritual in the ship.

What happens if the last Dormal initiate on ship dies while the ship is on open seas. Effect of closing (=real bad things) immediately or Real Soon Now?  Minutes, hours? Varies...

How many Dormal initiates one would be expect there to be on the ship normally (one, just a couple, 5% of the crew, 10% of the crew). Would vary by culture?

In my Glorantha, the Open Seas Ritual is for one Voyage, i.e. from leaving port until landfall, so the ship will carry on until it reaches land. Hopefully, it can get to a part and hire some more Dormal Cultists, otherwise it is stuck at the Port.

As to how many Initiates of Dormal, it really depends on the ship. Most ships have the Captain and maybe First Mate as Dormali, but some Holy Country ships might have more. After all, Dormal Cultists need to learn to sail and don't just get given a ship and told "There you go, get on with it".

The whole "person of Culture X won't use item Y because it is associated with element Z" is one of those parts of Gloranthan mentality which I don't like. It just feels like the kind of thing that would be so high-concept that really only zealots stuck by it. Is your average Yelmalian hoplite joe the kind of person who would stop bringing a waterskin if someone told him that it was associated with the Water Rune? Eh.

    Yes and no.

In the Real World, you can usually tell a person's religion in Ulster depending on whether they are called James or William, not always but usually. Some things are ingrained in a culture.

In Glorantha, Yelmalians probably wouldn't use maces or mauls, as they are weapons of darkness. Shargash uses them, because he wrested them from defeated enemies, presumably the same as Tolat and a Sword.

Some people won't mind using other culture's weapons, but the more devout would, in my opinion.

For me, Yelmalian Templars are on the more devout side, so would take cult sensibilities into account more than most folk.
