  1. Didn't want to derail the "what we'd like to see" discussion. Here's what we've got so far:

    From a game mechanics standpoint, a Planet of the Apes campaign wouldn't be hard to put together. We've already got the 19th Century firearms rules posted in the BRP Central downloads section, which is where the ape civilization is militarily, although they are more advanced medically. We already have professions templates for doctors, soldiers, and such, and psionics rules in the new BRP edition.

    Actually, I just watched the marathon on New Years Eve. In Beneath the Planet of the Apes, when the apes were preparing for the attack on the human mutants in the underground ruins, one of the apes (the general I think) had a submachine gun. When the first apes first attack. he comes in spraying bullets.

    While the other apes use bolt-action rifles, submachine guns do exist but are rare.

  2. Okay, I did some lokking over the CoC rules and some thinking. Here are the latest tewk ideas for the BRPVDR.

    1) Impales-since these reprensent hiting vital locations, slashing muscles, and tearing open ateries, they don't make sense against vehicles. So you can't get an impale against a vehicle. SPecial Successes DO get to rollon a Vehicle Special Charet, where you can take out headlight, blow tires, tear open fuel and brake lines, damage the steeering, and other things.

    do impales against undead either. This would tell me it is only against living targets.

    Whats it like? Well for me anyway, it's the best of everything

    I have ever loved about BRP under one set of covers.

    My group and I submitted playtest reports right up to 2 weeks

    ago and most of them made it in. So I love it.

  4. You could combine both methods. You get ticks for failing skills in stressful situations; and at the end of the scenario the GM could give out a number of skill improvements, which the player can choose to place anywhere.

    This would model both real-life processes of learning-by-failure and focussed training. :)

    My players are happy with the skill check system combined with the "Training" rules from RQ3. This allows them to spend a couple hours each day practicing with weapons or skills they wouldnt dare to use in combat situations as they may not be all that good yet, and still improve their normal skills "on the job" so to speak.

    THe only problem I can see id that some powers need to be bought by SIZ. For instance Speed and Flight in WoW were SIZ based. So a POW 11 SIZ 13 character would be out of luck.

    I don't remember what it was in WOW, but the cost to purchase Flight now is 1 per Level and each level will lift 3 SIZ. So to purchase the power for my adaption of Nathan Petrelli from "Heroes" only cost me 5 points. This left me plenty to boost his speed.

    Its not one point for one point. I don't want to go into further detail due to the non-disclosure agreement. I'm sure Jason could though.

  7. Just POW could be interesting. Almost on par with physic abilities or mutations. Someone who could fly or run fast but nothing else.

    During the playtest I created all the characters from the TV show "Heroes" using this method as they all only have one power for the most part.

  8. Not in the core rules (as it's never been a characteristic of BRP), but there's no reason a GM couldn't reward automatic skill checks or the like as a reward.

    This is what I have been doing. When one of my players fast talked his way out of a bad situation using only his roleplaying ability I still had him check the Fast Talk skill.

    Sometimes, if the roleplaying is VERY impressive, I let them make an immediate check for skill increase.

  9. Now I'd probably just do a quick roll of dice for each stairwell and if someone blows his skill roll, he get hurt, two failures and he drops. Probably get results similar to doing it out the long way, too.

    But I bet your players still look back on that battle in a way they wouldn't have if it was finished with just a couple of skill rolls.

    I was meaning to ask this and figured this was a good place in case anyone else is wondering the same thing.

    I know this wasn't in the Playtest document I saw but was kinda hoping it could be a late addition.

    In Pulp Cthulhu (I believe, as I havn't seen it) there was mention of a "Trait" system, something like a lighter version of advantages and disadvantages. Any chance of this making it in as an option?

    Some sketches of the interior art for the book can be found in Skook's sketchbook, the artist's blog.

    A preview of the cover illustration have just been released, but the latest rumours say it may be replaced, mainly due to the negative feedback it has gotten:

    I just joined the forum and thought I would say hi.

    I'm one of the playtesters of the new BRP and have to say i'm looking forward to this release as much as you all are.

    I started role playing back in 1978 with Traveller and ran a long 3 year campaign in the Spinward Marches that my players still talk about from time to time.

    I got into AD&D and GammaWorld in 1980 and finally discovered RQ in around 1982. At that point RQ and BRP became my system of choice and while I can't say I have not played other games (I have a spare room that I can't move around in and just use it for game storage) I always found may way back to BRP.

    As a matter of fact, I have prolly converted almost every game I have played over to BRP at one time or another.

    Anyway, I plan to post after I have had time looking over what has been posted so far.

    Oh, and for those who were not able to experience the playtest, Jason was the best writer I have ever playtested for and I've playtested for a few companies.

    I don't think anyone has anything to worry about.
