  8. Chaosium Inc, publisher of the Call of Cthulhu and RuneQuest tabletop roleplaying games, welcomes acclaimed artist Ossi Hiekkala to the Chaosium team. Ossi has formally joined the company as Staff Artist, working with fellow Staff Artist Loïc Muzy and Staff Cartographer Matt Ryan as part of the company's internal art team. Based in Finland, Ossi studied graphic design in Rovaniemi, Lapland, followed by three years studying illustration in Japan. After almost 20 years illustrating in the commercial world for advertising and packaging, and having achieved acclaim for his art in boardgames (Flamme Rouge, Honshu and Hokkaido, Nanga Parbat, etc), Ossi has ventured into illustrating for tabletop roleplaying games for Chaosium. Ossi says that RPGs were an essential element of why he turned to illustration: "In my early teens, RuneQuest was the first roleplaying game I ran. Call of Cthulhu was the second. Stormbringer may have been the third or fourth." Ossi's work for Chaosium includes the covers for the RuneQuest Starter Set, RuneQuest: Weapons and Equipment, and the forthcoming Lords of the Middle Sea (shown above). He is also working on the official movie poster for our blockbuster actual play series Graveyards of Arkham. You can also see Ossi's art inside Basic Roleplaying: Universal Game Engine (shown below, top), and titles in the new Cults of RuneQuest series including Cults of RuneQuest: The Earth Goddesses, Cults of RuneQuest: The Lightbringers, and most recently, Cults of RuneQuest: Mythology (shown below, bottom). Ossi currently has a slate of art commissions underway for RuneQuest (below, middle), Call of Cthulhu, Pendragon, BasicRoleplaying, and Lords of the Middle Sea that will appear in coming releases. 12. The Greg Stafford Memorial Award for Gloranthan Fandom was established in November 2018 in memory of Chaosium's revered founder and original creative visionary Greg Stafford. With the blessing of Greg's family Chaosium will occasionally and irregularly present the award to recognise a significant and exceptional contribution to Gloranthan Fandom in a current year. This month marks the fifth anniversary of Greg Stafford's passing, and we are pleased to present the 2023 award to the artist Mark Smylie. Chaosium community ambassador Nick Brooke said, "Mark’s beautifully-detailed artwork has brought community content authors’ imagined Gloranthan scenes vividly to life on the Jonstown Compendium. His most recent contribution is a massive amount of meticulous technical artwork showing all stages of Gloranthan shipbuilding, along with a diverse range of stunning nautical portraits, for Martin Helsdon’s 2023 magnum opus Ships & Shores of Southern Genertela." Mark’s art can be seen in several other Jonstown Compendium releases including Martin Helsdon’s Armies & Enemies of Dragon Pass and Men of the West, and Chris Gidlow’s ENNIE Award-nominated Citizens of the Lunar Empire. As with many other community content creators, Mark Smylie’s work has since featured in Chaosium’s own books (see the cover of the Red Book of Magic and many illustrations in the RuneQuest Starter Set, Pendragon Starter Set, and RuneQuest Weapons & Equipment). When not in Glorantha, Mark develops his own Renaissance-era fantasy world of Artesia, and is working on a BRP-derived role-playing game in that setting. On receiving the award, Mark Smylie said: I’m surprised and honored to be offered the 2023 Greg Stafford Memorial Award. I don’t know how many people currently at Chaosium know this but my very first art submission to a publisher was to Chaosium in 1983 when I was still in high school, and somewhere in my files I still have a very kind (and well deserved) rejection letter from Lynn Willis and a very brief letter from Greg describing some of the events that were going to mark the end of the Third Age (a letter that made my friends and I realize we really had no clue about the scale of what was going on as this was years before King of Sartar would see the light of day). Greg’s ongoing work on Glorantha, RuneQuest, and Pendragon was an enormous inspiration in my own creative endeavors—in no small part because it was and is always ongoing—and it’s been an honor and joy to be able to contribute artwork to all three in recent years, particularly for Martin Helsdon’s Ships & Shores book (and let’s face it, really I am getting this award because they can’t give it to Martin a second time) as well as to some of the as-yet unpublished books on Dragon Pass and Sartar that are in Chaosium’s extraordinary pipeline of material that continues to grow Greg’s legacy. Many, many thanks and I hope my small contributions bring some of that same joy to Greg's and Glorantha’s many fans. Previous recipients of the Greg Stafford Memorial Award for Gloranthan Fandom are: Lev Lafayette (2018), the driving force behind successfully bringing back RQ Con Down Under after a hiatus of twenty years. Martin Helsdon (2019), author of the monumental fan work The Armies and Enemies of Dragon Pass, based on Greg's writings. Nick Brooke (2020), for his passionate advocacy of the Jonstown Compendium, Chaosium's community content platform for Glorantha on DriveThruRPG. Katrin Dirim (2021), for her vibrant Gloranthan art, inspired by art styles from antiquity and the middle ages and capturing the essence of mythology. Andrew Logan Montgomery (2022), creator of the critically acclaimed and bestselling Six Seasons in Sartar trilogy in the Jonstown Compendium. All art featured on this page is by Mark Smylie and appears in Martin Helsdon's 2023 community content title Ships & Shores of Southern Genertela, available at the Jonstown Compendium, Chaosium's platform for independent creators for RuneQuest and Glorantha at DriveThruRPG.
  13. Today is the fifth anniversary of Greg's passing. While there may be a twinge of sadness each time we think of Greg, the smiles and fond memories far outweigh it. As we approach Chaosium’s 50th Anniversary we know his spirit and influence will remain undiminished. He left us five years ago today, but only in body. We have a post by Chaosium President Rick Meints in the Mythic Worlds forum:
  14. Today marks the fifth anniversary of the passing of Chaosium founder Greg Stafford. To memorialise the occasion Chaosium president Rick Meints writes: As one of the keepers of Chaosium’s archives, I cannot remember a day that didn’t involve Greg Stafford in some fashion or another. Every piece of paper from the days of yore either was written by him, reviewed by him, and/or signed by him. He involved himself in every aspect of our company from its inception in 1975 until that fateful day five years ago when he made his last journey to other side. Since his death we still feel his influence. Many of us use the phrase “what would Greg do?” when faced with a difficult decision or in need of a bit of inspiration. These last few months include some poignant examples of how much he remains a part of what Chaosium does. The Pendragon Starter Set published this summer bears his name on the front cover. It was one of Greg’s last projects, and the culmination of decades of his work. The same could be said of the RuneQuest Cults books being published over the next few months. Greg and Jeff spent many countless sessions working on the series of books cataloging the lore Greg first dreamt of in 1966 and enriched over the following half-century. As the curators of his body of work, we continue to work on his vision for them and remain true to it. Most of my Out of the Suitcase posts include Greg by name. I hadn’t thought about it until writing this that the Meints Index to Glorantha mentions him on most of its pages as well. All the “classic” Call of Cthulhu and RuneQuest material we rereleased in the last few years – still recognised as some of the most engaging and innovative TTRPG products of all time – have his name in the credits too. These are but a few examples of how his influence is still present. While there may be a twinge of sadness each time we think of Greg, the smiles and fond memories far outweigh it. As we approach Chaosium’s 50th Anniversary we know his spirit and influence will remain undiminished. He left us five years ago today, but only in body. 15. With the release of Cults of RuneQuest: Mythology, this thread is to catch any typos or errors spotted. Please note them here, quoting the relevant page number, the error, and the suggested correction. We will correct the PDF file and the print file for reprints. IMPORTANT NOTE: this is not a thread for questions or discussion of the rules, we are specifically looking for errors and typos only. Please take discussion to another thread. If you have multiple comments, please edit your previous comment and add them to that, thankyou. Please note @Brian Duguid's helpful notes on page numbering below Attention nitpickers! The page numbering is different in the PDF and the print editions, and so it's worth noting which version you have identified any issue with. In the PDF, the pull-out spread is numbered pages 26-29, so the first page of the Monomyth is on page 30. In the print edition, the pull-out is unnumbered (sitting between pages 14 and 15 in my copy), so the first page of the Monomyth is on page 26. I have the leatherette but I assume the standard print edition is the same. Well done to Chaosium for navigating two separate page numbering systems - the index in my PDF and print copies both seem to take full account of the different numbering, which is impressive 😃. But: if you are directing anyone to a page, for nitpicking or any other reason, you will want to specify whether it's the PDF or print version. Unless the content is before page 26, in which case they are the same.

  23. Newly-released on the Miskatonic Repository, our platform for independent Call of Cthulhu creators at DriveThruRPG, William Bailey's Haunted Mansion is a masterclass of showing how you can deftly concoct a (fictional) Cthulhu Mythos tale out of real historical happenings, bringing in known locations, authentic artefacts and documents, and actual people who lived at the time. First presented as a live actual play production at the Ballarat Heritage Festival in May 2023, this one-shot Call of Cthulhu adventure is set in the turbulent 1890s of the historic city of Ballarat in Victoria's Goldfields, Australia. The scenario explores some of the places, figures and legends in that folklore and the machinations of a real but today largely forgotten cult which operated in western Victoria in the late 19th century; the New Lights or Stephenites, after their ruthless and charismatic leader Stephen. We congratulate creators David Waldron and Shannon Nichols, and the talented players and musicians who brought the story to life at the gaming table! And thanks to Ballarat Libraries who helped make it all happen at the Ballarat Heritage Festival (in Call of Cthulhu, librarians are the heroes, don't you know...) William Bailey's Haunted Mansion David Waldron, Shannon Nichols ($5.99, 39 page PDF) William Bailey was a figure both idolised for his philanthropy yet infamous for his ruthlessness in business and the depths of the skulduggery involved in his running legal battles with the Learmonth family. His 1883 mansion, which still stands on Drummond St in Ballarat is often claimed to be one of Australia's most haunted buildings in local folklore. One-shot scenario, set in 1890s Ballarat. The Investigators, based on the historical figures Detective Thomas Montague, Dr Bella Guerin, Spiritualist James Curtis, and Skeptic Clara Baldwin, will explore the mysterious events unfolding in mining magnate William Bailey's Mansion and the dark manipulations of the historic New Light cult, led by their enigmatic leader Steven. The four pregen investigators, all the NPCs, the backstory, an evil cult and a terrifying artifact* are based on historical characters, events and objects. Illustrated throughout with period photographs and actual floorplans. *The Ballarat Mechanics Institute's Touching the Full Redemption of Mankind by the Death and Blood of Christ Jesus is one of the only two examples of anthropodermic bibliopegy (binding books in human skin) in Australia. This real book - which you can actually go and see in the Ballarat Mechanics Institute's collection today - features in this scenario. And for more fascinating historical stories of uncovering the forgotten secrets of Ballarat’s dark and bizarre past (and potential Call of Cthulhu nightmarefuel) do check out David Waldron's award-winning Tales from Rat City podcast. Originally, William Bailey's Haunted Mansion took shape as a live historical roleplaying session at the Ballarat Heritage Festival in May 2023, held at the town hall.
