  1. Thank you!

We'll make sure parrots and monkeys are in there somewhere, just for you :)

I was in a pirate game once where the bad-tempered captain had a parrot that kept shouting "X marks the spot!" and "keelhaul them!" at the most inconvenient moments. Much hilarity ensued. I think people will find monkeys and parrots an excellent addition to their pirate game. ;)

  2. The KS was unfortunately canceled, BUT... they did a relaunch that was immediately succesful! So check it out once again and help them reach some of the interesting stretch goals!

Pirates & Dragons RPG by Cakebread & Walton — Kickstarter (relaunched)

A new thread was started for the new KS:

  3. There are already monkey bats...but you're persuading me that maybe we need to stat monkeys as well...

I would go even further: monkeys need to be available as PCs*! At least the pirate pet par excellence: the smart and devious capuchin monkey. Howler and spider monkeys could be NPC-only. But seriously, what good is a pirate game without monkeys? Also make sure to add the undead variant! B-)

And speaking of pirate pets, there should also be parrots. ;D

*As you can tell I'm a big fan of the Terra Primate RPG.

EDIT: There ya go. I pledged to show you my support even before you added in the monkeys. ;)

  4. Certainly more Caribbean (the cultures and maps are very much inspired by the Caribbean), although the monster list reflects a combination of influences. If you're looking for something "PotC and Monkey Island-flavoured", you won't be disappointed. We've given a brief account of some of the influences on design and development in the FAQ at the bottom of the Kickstarter page :)

So, are there monkeys? ;) (Though seemingly insignificant, this mere fact could win me over, hehe.)

  5. I used to sneak out of my bed at night to watch the Poe adaptations on BBC downstairs while my parents were sleeping. Sheer magic.

If you enjoy The Old Dark House also check out three vaguely Poe-inspired classics - Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932), The Black Cat (1934) and The Raven (1935) - for beautiful atmospheric photography and fun scenario ideas for Call of Cthulhu, though not particularly Lovecraftian.

  6. While the game sounds really great, I'd love to use it to build something slightly more PotC and Monkey Island-flavoured and a bit less high fantasy. How well would this work as a toolkit for your own Caribbean + fantasy elements? Is the included piraty stuff - weaponry, ships, equipment - more Caribbean or more Sinbad?

  7. Great news. I'm waiting for OpenQuest Basics myself, as I have no interest in OQ's default setting, but that will also benefit from quality proof reading.

Newt, with regard to estimated release dates I'd suggest just adding 6-12 months to those in advance. Nobody is going to complain if a book releases earlier than "expected". ;) I've actually been wondering why all publishers don't do this.

  8. From what I've seen of the artwork this is going to look spectacular!

You may want to hold off for a little while on launching the Kickstarter, until dedicated consumers of Cthulhu product have financially recovered from backing Achtung! Cthulhu, CoC 7E and Cthulhu Wars! ;-D

  9. I have yet to read the Laundry books and wanted to know if the RPG had anything interesting to offer besides the setting. Sounds like it would even be useful to streamline/structure the old Call of Cthulhu rules which, IMHO, have some fiddly and some inconsistent bits that the basic BRP book did not give me any solutions for. Using BRP I can only see CoC getting more complicated when I actually would like to simplify/streamline it a bit more. I am doubly interested in The Laundry RPG now!

  10. (...)I've streamlined a lot of the BRP rules, and eliminated almost all "optional" rules. APP is back to CHA. EDU is a core stat. Success levels are just "specials" (no crits), and the results are handled more consistently. Rules that weren't applicable were removed. Systems were stripped down where possible and made more consistent. No magic points, endurance, strike ranks, etc. Circumstance modifiers and difficulty modifiers are clarified far better than they were in the core rulebook. Spot rules are clarified and less crunchy, and those that don't apply aren't there.

In short, this is my idealized BRP 2nd edition, a faster and leaner iteration specifically aimed at the occult/spy genre.

However, the rules are clear enough that you could easily use the book as source material for Call of Cthulhu, or CoC for The Laundry.

Does it include a Sanity mechanic as per CoC?
