Internal Consistancy

As a player and GM I love it when a system remains consistent from one setting to another. For example, I hated D20 stuff when you would find 10 different stats for a 44 mag in 10 different books, yet all for then same system.

In an effort to remain consistent with some of the other stuff thats out or coming out I have contacted a couple other authors and gained permission to use some of their ideas in Sword & Spell.

Nick Middleton was nice enough to let me use his Fatigue rules from Outpost 19 and Stuart Godbolt (MrJealousy) sent me some of his mundane critters stats from Aces High for my druid's reincarnation spell.

We have a great community of writers here that want to make awesome supplements for the best RPG on the market.

I'm making an official announcement that If anything that may be in Sword & Spell may be of use to another writer in an attempt to remain consistent please let me know so I can pay it forward.

Obviously, one worlds ogres do not have to be the same as another, but I would like to see consistency between things like weapons and mundane critters.

I assume you have potions in Sword & Spell as they are somewhat integral to a lot of early sword and sorcery games. As I have witches brewing potions I'd be happy to swap ideas with you... no promises that they will end up matching, of course, but as you say consistency is nice. PM me if you're interested and we can swap e-mail addresses.

This is a very good idea. I wish it would have come up a little earlier.

I do not know if I will be of much help here, but I have noticed that some of my creature stats for the Green are a little different than those in Aces High. I can easily bring them into line though. The two that I noticed right off were the Ghost and the Saber-tooth cat.

I have a system for alchemy, but I do not know if it will work with other paradigms though as it is not based on traditional Alchemy, like permutation, the arcanum and the philosophers stone, but rather like primitive pharmacology or herbal lore mixed with magic.

One thing that has been bothering me a little is the Elementals. I wrote up stats a little different than those in the BRP book as those seemed a little too potent and I liked the old RQ way of scaling them up. I am not particularly confident in the results. Has anyone else struggled with this?

And I wish I had thought of it a little sooner. The help its given me in such a short amount of time has been awesome.

I cant speak for everyone, but I personally like it when stats match. However, with critters there can be a little more leeway. After all, one settings Saber-tooths don't have to be as big, or small as another. But, If we were voting, I would vote for consistency.

It probably wouldn't feel classic enough for Sword & Spell, but Byron may find it interesting.

I stuck with the way they were done in BRP, but for certain settings I do think the RQ way is better.

This is turning out to be a very beneficial thread for me. Thanks everyone for participating as well for as the private messages.

Hey Rod,

I think that consistancy is a good thing and like you say, for mundane weapons and critters is probably a laudable goal.

I would probably hesitate to try and bring things like Alchemy or Elementals into any sort of universal consistency. I say that simply because such things are going to vary so much from setting to setting (like the non-real world Alchemy example for the Green). Elementals in the Young Kingdoms aren't the same as those in Glorantha, for example.

But otherwise, yeah, I think trying to get a mundane consensus would be a very good idea!
