I was thinking about getting AtV for a friend of mine. I was wondering does he need the Mythras book, or is it a stand alone book?

It is a setting book/supplement, se he needs the MYTHRAS core book to use it.

you will likely need the core rulebook to gain the most use out of it. Sorcery features fairly prominently in the setting. It could be done without it, but I expect there are a few other edge cases that might be impacted.

if you went without the core rulebook, you would need the free Mythras Imperative for certain, as it does not contain any of the rules for combat, falling, etc.
