    A little nomenclature.

We have the Theyalans - this is the big linguistic-cultural group that covers much of central and southern Genertela. They include the Esrolians, the Manirians (except the Ramali), much of Ralios, southern and eastern Fronela, the Pelorian hill country, Dragon Pass, etc. They speak related languages, all descended from Stormspeech.

Orlanthi - these are Theyalans that have Orlanth as one of their main gods. Most Theyalans are Orlanthi, but in Peloria many Theyalans are now Lunars and not Orlanthi.

The Heortlings. These are the Orlanthi peoples that originated in Heortland circa 1300. They are the old Sartarites and the Hendriki. Also called Heortlander or even just Sartarite.

Tarshites. These are the people that settled northern Dragon Pass circa 1350 or so. They are the Tarshites, the Tarsh Exiles, and the Far Point and Alone tribes.

Esrolians - these are the Theyalan people of Nochet. Ernalda is the main deity and they are matriarchal. Sometimes considered Orlanthi, sometimes not.

This was very helpful to me.

Wenelia- the Orlanthi people here are called Harandings and Entruli. Entru is a god, associated with pigs and with the goddess Ketha who gives her name to Kethaela. Harand, however, is a figure from the Lawstaff story, who rejects Orlanth's legal judgement and attempts to invoke the Law of Violence to steal land. It's possible that this is an exonym to emphasize the brutishness of the Wenelians, the "western barbarians". Harand is also called "Harand Boardick", so this may well be an endonym instead.

Culturally, we should probably presume they're distinct from Heortlings in general like Esrolians are, in that they grew from a distinct population of people who were brought into the Theyalan sphere, but I don't think there's any clear signs of how distinct they are, beyond the Ditali people next door to Esrolia adopting Esrolian material culture and the Pelushi people doing the same with Caladralander material culture.

Yeah, I'll be babbling about the Entrulings soon enough, but they're definitely not Alakoring, even if that is a useful label.

The Entruli of the Second Age were small, isolated clans who lived in the hidden valleys of Kotor (what is now central Maniria).  They were Orlanthi more than anything else, but Orlanth was a distant king for them, not someone you worship to survive the next year.

  3. I'm getting a lot of laugh reacts, so to be clear: while I wrote the last post with a light tone, the skillsets for discussing Glorantha and doing an academic literature review are extremely similar.

  4. Sometimes, I think that my education in sociological theory and my avocational reading of systematic theology is all just prep work for making sense of the corpus of Glorantha texts.

Secrets of Dorastor has a map if the sacred Mountains of Orlanth and you can clearly see a gap in the Mislari Mountains, a Mount Ramor. The gap also has Goat Hsunchen, so i think that this is the sacred Mountain of Ragnaglar.

    Oh, wow...

Having the sacred Mountain of Ragnaglar overlooking Maniria would explain some things, including why the GLs thought it'd be a good place for a Trickster College (there are some steps to get to that claim, but I feel it is a plausible extension)

I have no more info but for this sentence, all "true" hunshen have this abilities (rune spells), haven't they ?

I guess?  Probably?  At sufficient levels of power?

I'm being hesitant because hsunchen aren't someone I have good recall about on the top of my head.  One question is if shapechanging is commonplace, and then another question is if shapechanging into a middle form* is commonplace.  I'm assuming the latter is less common, but I dunno.

    * I'm trying very hard not to use the phrase "Crinos Form" here :)

  7. Thanks for the cites.  I really appreciate it.

....Heh.... I'm now imagining a hidden community of Caroni Goat Hsunchen who have converted to the Atroxic Church.  I'm sure my players would react in a very calm manner when they find humanoid goats talking about the holy significance of murder and betrayal...

(I know it doesn't work that way)

  8. Does anyone know of published ("canon" or otherwise) information or stories about the Mislari mountains?  I've been looking, and it seems pretty scarce.  Here's what there seems to be:

    • The Guide
      • About 7,000 mountain goat Hsunchen live there.
        • The fact that some incorrectly think they are Broo make me think they have some shapechange abilities that include middle-range forms.
      • They are impassible, save for a single pass that is constantly forgotten and lost.
        • Ethilrist in his White Horse Troop days was the last person to find it.
      • Wind Children live in parts
      • Significant mountains include Selon, which was a part of the Sky Dome that fell to earth, and Ramor, that somehow is related to illumination (Perhaps that is where Palangio's Vrok is from?)
    • Bestiary
      • Unicorns live on its Northern slops
    • Other
      • In Old English, "Mislar" means "bad teaching" (literally "Mis-Lore")

And.... that's all I can find.

Is there anything else extant?  I mean, I can go wild with the mythical origin of a mountain range, but... I'd like to know what is out there first

I'm not counting this as a Manirian Scratchpad thread, as I don't have any thoughts, just questions.

  9. The game will be starting up on Thursday, after a hiatus due to one of the players moving cross country.

They have explicitly requested that I lean into the "metal", meaning they like the more gonzo elements of Glorantha.  Dinosaurs, bizarre demons, heroes with reality breaking Feats, etc, etc, etc.

So, the Ogres have fled their lair in Selgos, leaving behind some Chaos monsters for the PCs to deal with.  It's not the Cacodemon, but it may take out a market or two, depending on what they do.

Presumably, no relation to the "Tar" sound in Tarsh, Tarkalor, Taraling, Tarinwood.

Hmm... not completely sure about Tarinwood, as IIRC, its named after a deity.  Tar-In could fit that scheme, though it is pretty far from Dorastor

  11. This isn't a big issue, but one that I've had fun puzzling with is that the suffix "-plose" appears, as far as I can tell, exactly twice: Erenplose and Kaxtorplose.  Additionally, "Erenplose" is not the original name of the city, which is either Herilia or Porluftha.

My current best guess is that -"plose" indicates a protected place in 2nd Age Slontan (which is probably a pretty dead language at this point... except maybe Ramalia).  Erenplose is therefore "the city saved/protected by Eren," and Kaxtorplose is "the city saved/protected by Kaxtor."

It is far more fun when everyone is on different pages.

That way you get the Arkati and Rashorans arguing, the Lunars looking down from their moral high-horse and the Gbajites just stirring up trouble.

    KINSTRIFE!!!!!!!!

  13. 1 observation and 1 question

Observation: the Reforestation will create mass migrations in Maniria by the Manirians seeking to escape the forests.  I would imagine this population to generally follow rivers downstream.  Consequently, the coastal cities of Handra, Fay Jee, and Peelo would likely have to figure out what to do with refugee populations, as would Thelos over in Vinvale and Roskoth in Esrolia.

As for the question: How do the Aldryami of Arstola differ from the Aldryami of Tarinwood?

    • Thanks 1
  14. If there is one thing this thread has taught me, it is this:

If I ever play a relatively high powered game set in Glorantha, regardless of rule system (RQG, HQG, 13AG, etc), the question, "What is Illumination?" is probably something I'll want in the Session 0 discussion making sure everyone is on the same page.
