  1. Something like this, anyway. It shouldn't be necessary to roll for each member of the mob.
  2. :thumb: Greg has said many wise things over the years, but this has to be the wisest.
  3. Finally posted this puppy - in the downloads section under "Alternate Rules" - look for "BRP - MA v. 1.0" I welcome any and all constructive input!
  4. Working on my "Celtic" setting. The allegiance rules and magic rules really helped me rethink a lot of things, so it's much less of an RQ and more of a BRP setting now. I just finished the "Pictish" shamans chapter. Several more to go. GURPS Martial Arts converted to BRP, as mentioned elsewhere.
  5. I do apologize if I came off too harshly. That wasn't my intention. I am going to say something in my defense, though. I really did think that: "For the unofficial "Martial Arts" rules (yes, I'm working on them), I'm trying to come up with a way to handle splitting attacks among multiple opponents." ...pretty much made it clear that I was (a) working on a set of rules to handle martial arts and ( soliciting suggestions - not presenting a houserule for critique. If it didn't, I'm sorry for any misunderstanding. To be honest, Fun Guy, in your response it seemed like you were demanding that I somehow justify developing such a set of rules. That may not have been your intent, but that's how it looked. So that rubbed me the wrong way. Then Claudius, though well-intentioned, didn't seem to understand what I was saying. Since I was already peeved, I dashed off a needlessly harsh response. This is pretty much a friendly list, and seems like a nice bunch of people, and I'd like to see it stay that way. It was a misunderstanding, and I didn't need to be an ogre about it. I will look at these. I know about the "skills over 100%" - I've been an RQ guy for 20+ years. But that isn't a "skill," per se - it's more like an effect - if you're at 100%, you can do it. I'm thinking more of an actual, specific "Fight Multiple Guys At Once" skill - that one could train and develop in. Or maybe having such a skill is a bad idea. I don't know yet. I think everyone here as interesting suggestions, and worth thinking about. When I get the whole thing written up, I expect to include a section of "stuff I couldn't quite get a handle on," and I welcome the input of others' on such topics. My hope is that this thing will be a living document, and other people may revise/add to it. On a side note - I realize some may feel that BRP doesn't need supplemental martial arts rules - and guess what - you're right! It doesn't need them. BRP has always been excellent and Jason and Co's new book is terrific, comprehensive, as near to perfection as things get. But I myself never really found the "Martial Arts" skill in any of it's BRP incarnations satisfying. And I liked what GURPS did with it and think it can be adapted pretty well to BRP. It isn't anything necessary - just something thats of interest - to some of us (clearly I'm not the only one, as others have expressed interest in seeing such a supplement - that's why I'm working on it and planning to post it). For those who have no interest in such a thing, that's fine. It's easy enough to ignore any postings about it. I have no interest in the current or recently-raging "firearms" debate, but for people who are into that sort of thing.... Anyway, again, I hope my intentions are now clear and there's no hard feelings.
  6. Claudius - it's NOT a houserule. It's not anything right now. I'm working through updating a rough conversion of GURPS Martial Arts to BRP, something I initially did several years ago. I'm working on it now to make it consistent with the current BRP rules. Most of the ideas adapt to BRP quite easily. A few don't. The idea of having a skill allowing one to battle multiple opponents in a single round is one that doesn't. Things that jut plain don't adapt well may simply get dropped. Right now, I happen to think that it might be best to simply drop the idea and stay with the traditional BRP splitting attacks rules, as outlined by Shaira. My initial post was ONE idea I was toying with, and one that I found unsatisfactory - for exactly the same reasons you did. Nothing more. I posted here to see if anyone had, perhaps, a suggestion I liked better.
  7. I'm inclined to agree with you. It's just something I'm thinking about as I go along. It may be better to leave it alone.
  8. Refer back to this thread: http://basicroleplaying.com/forum/basic-roleplaying/545-anyone-doing-martial-arts-supplement.html
  9. For the unofficial "Martial Arts" rules (yes, I'm working on them), I'm trying to come up with a way to handle splitting attacks among multiple opponents. What I'm thinking of: There's a "Splitting Attacks" skill which can be learned If you're using it, you can make as many attacks against different opponents in a single melee round as DEX rank or Strike Rank will allow. Your chance to attack would be either your attack skill or your "Splitting Attacks" skill - whichever is lower. Possibly a further penalty on each attack after the first? Any thoughts?
  10. Just thought I'd get in on the monster-creating fun. Here's a couple from literature and/or urban legend (or whatever you wish to call it): THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN STR 18 Move 10 CON 18 Hit Points 17 SIZ 16 Armor: 1 point INT 11 POW 17 DEX 17 Weapon Attk% Damage Parry Saber 75% 1d8+1+1d6 70% Thrown Object 75% 1d3 x item SIZ +1d3 - Skills: Brawl 75%, Ride 100%, Grapple 75%, Jump 55%, Listen 60%, Spot 60%, Stealth 45% THE HEADLESS’ HORSEMAN’S HORSE STR 31 Move 12 CON 15 Hit Points 22 SIZ 28 Armor: 1 point INT 4 POW 16 DEX 14 Weapon Attk% Damage Bite 40% 1d3+1d6 Kick 40% 1d8+2d6 Rear/Plunge 40% 2d8+2d6 Trample 40% 4d6 Skills: Dodge 45%, Hide 25%, Sense 75% Of course, the Headless Horseman is best known from Washington Irving’s famous short story, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” The Horseman was said to be a Hessian mercenary, killed in a battle for Chatterton Hill when his head was taken off by a cannonabll. His body buried in a graveyard outside an Old Dutch Church in Sleepy Hollow, his shade appears as an all-too physical ghost who hunts nightly travellers, presumably with intent to decapitate them and take their heads. He may carry his own head, and even use it as a weapon, although a pumpkin or other objects have also been used. There are other headless horsemen in folklore and literature, including the ghost of a beheaded criminal said to haunt Texas. It is assumed that his horse is also a ghost, as horses are generally not known to associate with ghosts. MOTHMAN STR 18 Move 10, 20 flying CON 16 Hit Points 17 SIZ 19 Armor: physical weapons (guns, knives, clubs, etc) do only minimum damage INT 5 POW 15 DEX 14 Weapon Attk% Damage Parry Fear 100% see below Radiation 100% see below Skills: Fly 100%, Hide 25%, Jump 65%, Sense 50%, Stealth 100% “Most observers describe the Mothman as a winged man-sized creature with large reflective red eyes and large moth-like wings. The creature often appeared to have no head, with its eyes set into its chest. A number of hypotheses have been presented to explain eyewitness accounts, ranging from misidentification and coincidence, to paranormal phenomena and conspiracy theories.” (from Wikipedia) Mothman is a creature of mystery. Whether it is a single, unique entity or a member of a species; whether it is extraterrestrial or supernatural in origin; whether it is malicious or merely curious, what its intentions are, and what powers it may have are all unknowns. Mothman is not known to physically attack, but its mere presence inspires terrible panic in many people. Any character encountering Mothman must overcome it’s POW on the Resistance Table or succumb to blind panic – screaming, running away, becoming incoherent, passing out, etc. It may also have a significant SAN cost to encounter the creature. Additionally, Mothman radiates a form of radiation that acts as POT 5 radiation (see BRP pg 231). Any character in Mothman’s presence for more than 15 minutes automatically suffers these effects. Generally, Mothman haunts an area for a period of time, then disappears. It seems to appear as a kind of herald for unnatural activity – its appearance in an area is usually followed swiftly by other bizarre, paranormal/supernatural/extraterrestrial events (bizarre hauntings, UFO sightings, other odd creatures or persons appearing in the area, weird experiences in general), often eventually culminating in some kind of disaster or tragedy.
  11. 1. A skill that covers balance - acrobatics, balance, tumbling-type stuff 2. Rules for fighting multiple opponents at once Haven't turned these up yet. Did I miss them?
  12. Though I've liked several of the superhero movies a lot - I have to agree that "The Incredibles" beats the pants off of them. I'm a huge fan of the Jack Kirby-era "Fantastic Four" (and a huge fan of Kirby period), and I think "The Incredibles" captures the spirit of the 60's-era FF better than any of the films or any of the various animated series. I consider it to be the "real" FF movie. On another note: I don't want to see another "Conan" movies unless someone does it MY WAY. To me, the Howard "Conan" stories aren't about some musclebound clod swinging his sword around - they're dark, heavily atmospheric fantasy/horror stories in which Conan, who's perhaps musclebound but never cloddish - merely a simple, direct, but not stupid, guy becomes a protagonist. Buy I may be alone in thinking that...
  13. Got mine Thursday. It's awesome, beautiful, everything I could have hoped for and more. Just to play devil's advocate, I will say that SOME of the new artwork didn't reproduce well. Too bad, because when I saw the online samples of these, they are actually very nice pieces. Congratulations and thank you, Jason (and Sam).
  14. Not to play devil's advocate (even though I am), but is the alternative, then, that no one should ever endorse an OP game or supplement? Even if, in their honest opinion, it is superior to currently available product - or if there is no currently available equivalent product? If all BRP COC stuff were out of print, and only the d20 stuff were in print, I guess I'd have to keep silent.
  15. I partially agree. I think it's best, as you've done here, to suggest what currently in-print resources a new player can use. But there's hardly anything wrong with recommending OP stuff, too, if you honestly believe it's superior - with the caveat that it's OP and will require searching and possibly paying higher prices. So I would say recommending OP stuff exclusively is - not silly, but not all that helpful.
  16. Well, I've officially tossed in the towel on Amazon. They STILL can't give me an ETA, even though I have confirmed with Charlie and Dustin that the Amazon copies were shipped immediately. So, I've cancelled my Amazon order and re-ordered from Chaosium direct. Bummer. I'd have had the thing now if I'd been a little more patient and pre-ordered from Chaosium.
  17. Yes, this has been a good thread, and I appreciate Rosenstern's articulating his/her argument, even though I might split hairs over the term "dated" (but I won't). Also that it's been civil.
  18. Not meant to play devil's advocate or sound like a jerk, but what, specifically, are these "dated" game concepts?
  19. I just received a notice from Amazon that they don't know when they'll be able to ship.:mad:
  20. Possible Skills: Drive Auto 100% Keep Anxious Gaming Nerds Placated 75% Hide Beer in Crotch 65%
  21. "F___ you. And f_____ people from Wyoming. You ever meet anybody from Wyoming? Not me!" (Lou Reed) George is my new hero.
  22. Gotta hand it to Chaosium for at least keeping us updated and treating the whole thing with humor.
  23. Working out the magic systems for my pseudo-Celtic setting. Thinking about updating my GURPS Martial Arts ->BRP notes, once I get the new BRP book (early July now, from the look of it). Adapting GURPS Spirits along the same lines.
  24. "The only RPG that matters." I guess they could call it BURPS. But I don't recommend it. In re: the main topic - BRP can find it's niche as long as there's good settings and material to support it. Probably wouldn't hurt to stress its connections to COC, since that game is popular. It's not going to knock D&D off the charts. D&D has far more promotional money and muscle, as well as years of name recognition, going for it. But there's room out there for BRP. Anyway, I'll be able to play it. So I'll be happy.
