  1. Weren't the old Hero Quest/Hero Wars PDFs taken off the Chaosium site and moved to DrivethruRPG? They currently lead to a 404 page.
  2. Earlier today I happened to read this blog post on an old Games Workshop (they reprinted for the UK) version of Call of Cthulhu. That is where I was getting my information. Before I reread it to confirm I would of sworn the author mentioned the 3rd edition didn't change much and just split out the info but that isn't there on a second read through... I am sure someone will be along shortly to correct me on early Cthulhu editions, my knowledge is based on reading these forums and other places on the internet and not familiarity with the source material at the time. By the way the Refereeing and Reflections blog is fantastic for RPG reviews of Chaosium and non Chaosium products and I highly recommend giving it a peruse.
  3. First edition had the BRP rulebook and a separate Call of Cthulhu rulebook and you needed to reference both. Second edition took the relevant rules from the BRP rulebook and put them in the Call of Cthulhu one. You can see the BRP rulebook in this post that Chaosium posted on their blog a few months ago. With 3rd edition I believe they split the existing Call of Cthulhu rulebook into a GM booklet and a Player booklet but not 100% positive on that bit.
  4. Say no more! I wasn’t trying to get more product info out of you guys just wanted to double check I had blog posts to hype me up for Pendragon in the future 🙂
  5. My wallet is ready! I’ve been training it for a few weeks now to make sure it’s in fighting shape for this challenge.
  6. I’ve recently just bought RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha and one of the things I read through to decide if it was for me was the old designing RuneQuest series of posts on the Chaosium blog. Are there any similar plans for Pendragon to give us some behind the scenes info? Or even something along the lines of the posts on the starter set for Pendragon like the ones this year on RuneQuest which worked so well at hyping me up for RuneQuest they acted like the starter set itself and got me to purchase the slipcase set before I even got my grubby mitts on the set.
  7. Thanks for the reply. Sucks to see that 😞 I’ve now switched to just ordering from Chaosium directly instead of other retailers to help out as much as I can AND get free PDFs! I shall just have to learn patience I suppose…
  8. I am very glad to hear this! I just ordered the RuneQuest slipcase and I had to have a long talk with my Keepers and Investigators Handbooks (they ganged up on me) about why they weren’t in a fancy case and did that mean I didn’t love them enough. It was a mess they were already jealous after I spent a lot of the evening reading my new books instead of them but seeing the slipcase put them over the edge… Please don’t take this as complaining about a situation out of your hands but im curious about how much the pandemic has impacted your shipping schedule. Im estimating its at least doubled the time spent shipping based on the timeframe for books releasing physically going from 3-4 months to approximately 6?
  9. I didn't realise it was based on an old CYOA until after I had bought it. Does it cover only a portion of the series or the full 12 volumes? I used to read CYOA books as a kid but I can't remember any of the ones I used to have, pretty sure they didn't involve dice or keeping track of inventory stuff (or I just ignored that aspect). After reading some of the alone in the... Cthulhu books I got interested in them recently and started picking up the new Endless Quest D&D ones that have been released in the last few years. I've got an eye on the Fighting Fantasy books to pick up at some point too. Any other suggestions of what to look at?
  10. So I've now bought Solasta! Steam sale tempted me and I grabbed that and the Fabled Lands game Simon mentioned earlier (thanks for the recommendation @simonh! I haven't played Fabled Lands yet but Saturday night started up Solasta and started to make some characters, I was talking to some people from my D&D 5e group on discord at the the time and ended up streaming it for them so we could all see the character creator. 3 hours later it was midnight and I had 10 characters but hadn't started a campaign yet! Excited to see if the actual game will be as engaging as the creator. Just hope they add more classes and races. I also grabbed another game called Wildermyth which is a tactical RPG that might be of interest to people here. Just released so not in the steam sale sadly but it was under £20 so should be fairly affordable in other currencies that aren't on fire right now...
  11. Yeah we don't have a lot of hot days either. Last year we had a brutal week or so of 35 degree heat and 20-22 nights. Now this may not sound so bad but I've never been in a home in the UK with air conditioning (businesses tend to have it however) and our homes are built with big thick walls for retaining heat and big windows for maximizing the light we get so once the house gets hot it doesn't really cool down. We ended up spending all day with all the curtains closed to minimize the amount of thermal energy transferred and still bloody roasted...
  12. Everyone here (outside of the Bay Area and Australia) should move to the U.K. down in sunny Sussex it has been a typical English summer of rain, rain and more rain. Between showers today it will get up to a blistering 19 Celsius! I had to close my windows last night as it was down to 12 degrees and got chilly enough to wake me up. On the plus side we are looking at a scorcher of a day on Friday! 21 degrees hot! If any of you manage to move here before Friday then expect the locals to instantly go from complaining about the rain to how bloody hot it is. And if all of this sounds too warm for you might I suggest my native Glasgow where any weather above 12-13 Celsius is taps off weather (tops off so walking down a street you need sunglasses to avoid snow blindness from the reflections of pasty skin that never sees the sun). They also do deep fried Mars bars (milky ways for you US folk) which are a nice delectable treat if you limit yourself to 1 a year at month or a heart attack in any more frequent occurrence.
  13. I haven't played D:OS 2 yet as I haven't quite finished the first one yet. Just checked Steam and 50 hours in so making some progress. I couldn't help buying Baldurs Gate 3 the second it was available, I loved the originals and I've played too much 5e to not be curious about how it was all implemented. I don't know what you mean about Unity however? Larian uses an in house engine for their games. Were you referring to the low quality of some unity games? If so I think that's more down to how easy it is to get up and running with Unity and their licencing structure making it an attractive tool for people trying to make the quickest game possible to try and scam some people out of money rather than an inherent aspect of the engine. There are plenty of good games made in unity out there. Yes that's the one I mean! I've had it installed on my PC for a while now trying to psych myself up to play it. I really really struggle with horror games and movies (but love horror books and RPGs) but keep thinking I should probably at least give it a go... Now if they did a point and click Call of Cthulhu game that would be my jam right there. Also sorry to have slightly dis-railed the topic, I would really like to see an open world first person RPG in the same vein as any of the Elder Scrolls games but I too think that is unrealistic to expect. If you look at Pathfinder Kingmaker that is what I am hoping to see something along the lines of.
  14. Thank you all for the game recommendations! I already had Baldurs Gate 3 which I've been enjoying recently and have now added Solasta and Fabled Lands to my wishlist to pick up soonish. Also turns out I already have Outward in my library (I buy a lot of bundles) so installing that now! As for what I'd like to game to be like, ideally I'd like a top down 3D game like Divinity Original Sin or Baldurs Gate 3 but that might just be my massive nostalgia for isometric CRPGs from my youth talking... Has anyone here played the Call of Cthulhu video game? I have it but I am a massive wimp when it comes to games and movies so have yet to give it a go.
  15. Well I will go back to crying quietly in private and putting on a stiff upper lip around people then...
  16. Finally living in the U.K. has paid off! Everything is coming up Milhouse!
  17. I just hope the non human adventurers promised in one of the blogs are available in the folio character sheet option. I need me some full page duck portraits!
  18. I think he also did the novelisation of those amazing hobbit movies. I bought the book all excited to read it then I got confused and kept wondering why he kept skipping all the awesome scenes from the movies.
  19. There is more info in the similar topic on the RuneQuest forums looks like a fairly big increase.
  20. Sorry if I derailed the thread. I wasn't trying to complain about the Call of Cthulhu classic stuff, in fact I'm very very happy about it and will be backing it on Kickstarter (I have stayed away from Kickstarter previous due to the uncertainty but with the track record set since the 2015 change I have no issues creating an account and backing this). I brought up Shadows of Yog-Sothoth as a potential 7e product to highlight what I feel is valuable about getting old products back in print, all the books I have for 7e are highly polished and easy to understand, I'm fascinated by the history of the hobby and want to read through older material without paying collector prices (I know PDFs are available and I like them as a back up while I run but I find it hard to sit down and read through a whole module as a PDF). With Shadows of Yog-Sothoth I can look forward to eventually receiving what I am sure will be another high quality product from Chaosium and I can compare and contrast the original edition with the later one to see what changed which I'm sure will be a valuable learning experience for my own scenarios. I'd like to do this with other books you have such as Masks of Nyarlothotep and Terror Australis but understand why you haven't made those available considering there are newer and better versions for 7e for sale (which I own and have enjoyed reading). TLDR: Sorry I derailed the thread woo classic stuff coming back!
  21. I like this more than if they had updated the books to 7e stats. I haven't read Shadows of Yog-Sothoth myself but from reviews I've seen the impression I've gotten is that it's a bit rougher than later campaigns with things like the Silver Twilight people only letting in men, the Worm that walks chapter and generally it feeling a bit disjointed between the chapters (please note I haven't read it myself so just going on what I've heard). If there is to be a 7e update of Shadows of Yog-Sothoth I'd want it to be in the Masks of Nyarlathotep format with it aiming to be the definitive version. From the picture Rick shared with us it looks like Shadows of Yog-Sothoth is the biggest book in the package but still around 180ish pages which is the original size TL:DR I would be a bit disappointed if the 7e update for the first Call of Cthulhu campaign was pretty much a reprint with updated stat blocks.
  22. Woooooo! I'm mainly excited by the Shadows of Yog-Sothoth, I don't think I own anything in 7e that really features Cthulhu or Cults of Cthulhu except as tertiary things. I'm going to take a guess and assume the scenarios are in their original format just remade as electronic files like in RuneQuest classic? Not that I am complaining if they aren't updated, I'm just happy to see more material back in print. Also that map in the background is gorgeous. Will that be going up on Red bubble? I'd love to get one to hang on the wall without crease marks.
  23. Well in the thread you posted about 40th anniversary predictions someone said that Rick mentioned a Kickstarter for the early edition stuff. They could be running it like they did RuneQuest classic and are trying to get as much as possible back into availability. As far as I can tell the only early Call of Cthulhu products that have been updated and are in print are Masks, Paper Chase from the Starter set, The Haunting from the quickstart, Terror Australis and some of the Alone against books. I am a new player though so could be missing stuff. (I excluded the other 2 starter set scenarios as I think they are from the 5th and 6th rulebooks which were 90s or later same with Horror or Mansions of Madness, I set an arbitrary 80s cutoff for this post. I don't think this is especially likely but it's fun to speculate!
  24. So as far as I can remember the main difference between 1e and 2e was that 1e had the BRP basic booklet, the specific CoC rules and a 1920s book then 2e removed the BRP basic booklet and put the relevant rules in the relevant booklet? https://www.chaosium.com/blogout-of-the-suitcase-10-can-some-investigators-help-solve-this-mystery-with-library-use/ This is an blog post from back in February and should give us some hints of what could be included. From the picture it looks like BRP Basic book 1920s sourcebook CoC rules Shadows of Yog-Sothoth Cthulhu Companion Trail of Tsathogghua Fragments of Fear The Asylum and other tales Keepers Screen A nifty looking map some paper in the box I can't identify Also on the last picture showing everything in the box it shows what looks like the screen at the top but it has the resistance table which doesn't appear on the screen in the image above. Was this on the other side of the screen for player reference or could it be something else? Going to be a long two weeks...
  25. Well it looks like we will have an announcement for the 40th anniversary in about 2 weeks if this blogpost is anything to go by https://www.chaosium.com/blogout-of-the-suitcase-14-helping-stamp-out-the-mythos/
