the wedding rituals in the Southern reaches sound awesome ...
  2. Numenera and 13th Age did very well off the back of shiny production values and slick marketing in the right places. A hard cover MagicWorld kickstarter with stretch goals, bookmarks and errata (sorry) sounds like it could be a hit.
  3. http://www.chaosium.com/magic-world-quick-start-pdf/
  4. That's great news. Magic World and Trollslayer will be next on the purchase list.
  5. How would you convert the characters from "In Search of the Trollslayer" to the recommended heroic level? Add 12 points onto their chracteristics or soften the encounters a little?
  6. There is the 2nd edition over at mindjammer that is scheduled for release Winter 2014/15 based on Runequest 6: http://mindjammerpress.com/chronicles/ Not sure about the supplements, but the page count has gone from 114 pages to 296 pages in the second edition which could indicate that some got absorbed into the new edition.
  7. Thanks for the links. I read with interest the publishing saga with Chaosium and your ultimate decision to release the Drums along the Frogtoe as a free release. Although I am very happy and grateful to read such a well designed publication for free, it seems such a shame that Chaosium didn't support this project and let you continue to develop it commercially. Have you considered rolling Frogtoe into an enhanced second edition and publishing it with one of the other BRP publishers? After all, Chronicles of Future Earth is getting a second edition at MindJammer and Classic Fantasy has found a new home and second edition at The Design Mechanism.
  8. My intent is to set up a campaign using RQ6 (once I've re-read the rules), but I keep being drawn to Magic World. I was thinking of taking a non-gaming group through the quick start to get a feel for the system and to expose some interested muggles to the world of table top rpging. So, whadaya think? Am I being too ambitious and better off aiming it at some D&D mates that need to see the light or what?
  9. This looks very interesting. Is there a review of The Green anywhere?
  10. Yep, I'm over there now trying to figure out how to install it on linux. Thanks for the heads up
  11. Yes, I feared as much. I guess we might be able to come up with some suitable name that might catch on in the industry (like the BGB did), that would help distinguish BRP / d100 family games from distant cousins (Pendragon, Eclipse Phase) and other percentile based games. However, I suspect that what is needed is a bold move on the part of Chaosium to embrace the opportunity and create a "BRP100" logo or some such, with a set of clear, qualifying guidelines. Sadly, I think there are 2 hopes of that and one of them is Bob.
  12. How about creating the BRP Big Gold Book forum (after all, was it not BRP Central that coined that name?), add a couple of pinned notices in each forum advising that from this moment on, it is advised that general questions go here and specific questions relating to the BGB and its mongraphs go there. Add an additional notice that when time permits, maybe (maybe not) some of the older articles will be migrated. Would that not satisfy the desire to split the groups without the admin burden falling on you?
  13. I've been snooping around the Roll20 virtual tabletop and it looks like a great system for playing games remotely. Has anyone at BRP Central tried it or is interested in trying it for any of the BRP or d100 games? https://app.roll20.net/home/ Although there is an entry in the drop down menu for Call of Cthulhu. No entry exists for any other BRP or d100 games. There is however a Runequest 6 character sheet which is a good sign. https://github.com/Roll20/roll20-character-sheets/tree/master/Runequest_6
  14. Here is another possibility. (Ok, it's actually very similar to those already mentioned, but a teeney weeney bit different). If people prefer to keep the name of this forum as Basic Roleplaying, then why not create that subfolder in the d100 and call it BGB or Big Gold Book or whatever. That way we have our central discussion area and the BRP/BGB discussions have their own separate forum. Its late, I'm tired and this may not just be similar, it may be down right cloned. Apologies if it is.
  15. There seems to be confusion about the definition of a d100 game. For many (like here at BRP Central), it means that the game is derived from the Runequest/BRP family of games. For others, it means that the system uses percentile dice, which would also include Warhammer, Rolemaster (& MERP), Eclipse Phase, Star Frontiers etc. on these boards its pretty clear that d100 is the former, but as soon as one explores other rpg sites, it appears that the d100 family has a brand and identity issue and that d100 can mean many things. As an example of the confusion, check out this discussion over at rpg.net: http://rpggeek.com/thread/888047/d100-and-brp I can't shake the feeling that the d100 family needs to have a name that distinguishes it from other percentile dice games. Especially, as the pedigree of games within the d100 family are so strong and it deserves some recognition. Here are some possibilities: Using BRP as a distinctive name, especially as Chaosium claims that their games are part of the BRP system. Also, games in the d100 family are assigned BRP as their system on rpg.net. However, there are potential problems with using the BRP name. Firstly, how does Chaosium feel about that? I believe they have copyright over Basic Role Playing and possibly even the usage of BRP. Also, how do d100 manufactures feel about using BRP? Refer to the games as being d100 SRD or d100II SRD, but that also comes with some challenges. Firstly, its a mouthful and secondly it doesn't distinguish the d100 family from other percentile based games very well. Moreover, I can't see Chaosium saying that their games are part of the d100 SRD family. Can you imagine? Refer to the games as being Runequest based. This is probably out, because the Runequest name is licensed and is also strongly associated with Glorantha. Have BRP refer to Chaosium games. And have BRP/d100 (or something more catchy) as a separate name for licensed and SRD based games. Another possibility is that a generic term for all BRP/d100 family games already exists. That it is supported by a recognisable logo and website and that I have somehow been a dithering idiot and missed it. Now, I am also going to look a complete muppet if it turns out that Chaosium has no issues with d100 SRD and other games in the same family (Openquest, GORE etc) marketing themselves as part of the BRP family. However, certain comments and the recent debate on this site over having a separate d100 forum (so as to allow BRP / Big Gold Book discussions to remain separate from d100 family discussions), has lead me to believe that this is not the case. So, is it important? Well, maybe. Depends. I think so. After all, clearly delineating between D&D 3rd Edition and D20 OGL, helped wotc sales massively (well, until the whole Pathfinder/4th edition cock-up occurred). It also helped many d20 publishers get established and helped the fans get some amazing games and licenses (even with that inferior class based, AC using system). What do you think?
  16. We have had many magic systems in the d100 verse. As a d100 newb, I am curious to know what people think have been hits, near misses and backfires. So, here are some questions to hopefully get some debate and discussion started. Naturally, not all questions need to be answered, just those you feel you have some thoughts on and any extra comments and other would be great: What systems have you experienced? What is your favorite? Do you prefer simple or complicated Magic systems? Is balance or creative flexibility more important? Which is the most elegant and simple version? Which is the most comprehensive yet uncomplicated? Which is the most fun for players? Which is the easiest to role out to new players as they get used to the game? What are the best combined systems from 2 or more existing sources (including expansions and monographs)? ... Oh, and please add any extra questions you think are relevant
  17. Hey Newt, congratulations on getting pick of the week on drivethru and being one of their top sellers. One thing tho, they mentioned that the game system was "SYSTEM: Unique system (OpenQuest)" and only mentioned its connection to d100 deep within the description. Was this an error or deliberate? Wouldn't showing its parentage and connection to the d100 universe more clearly enhance the possible sales?
  18. Thanks for the suggestions. I shall be looking into all of them. Corum looks very interesting but sadly doesn't appear to be available in pdf form and I am very excited to hear of the half a dozen MW books in the pipe.
  19. The intent of the forums is a bit confusing to me. First off, although I've played rpgs for 20+ years, I've only recently returned to rpging and so consider myself a newb. My attraction to D100 comes from fond memories of CoC, Stormbringer & Runequest. Moreover, I like that the system is rules light, realistic, tactical, hasn't changed much and is largely compatible within itself. The quality of the game system speaks volumes, but I didn't know which variant to invest my limited time into. I'd read reviews on rpg.net and elsewhere for many of the current games, but I wanted a sense of which is considered the best (very subjective I know), has the greatest support material and the most future in it before the dreaded (or sometimes welcomed) update. I was so glad when I found BRP Central. Not only did it provide a great location for me to lurk and read up on opinions, but the pinned tabs provided great links to currently published material to help with the research and the decision. However, some things confused me. It seemed that the forums were fiefdoms for their respective game and largely favored only currently compatible products and discussions. The excellent pinned tab of products, lists those that are of the current version. Curiously, there is no pinned tab for recommended and highly compatible products (not all, just most relevant) from earlier versions. Not only that but I wondered where to ask questions that were related to multiple systems (I chose the BRP forum in the end). The cross compatibility and backward compatibility that attracted me to d100 was not easy to find. Right now, we are blessed with multiple versions of a great game. Having separate folders for each currently supported games makes sense (subject to them receiving enough individual traffic) as the variations in character generation, combat, magic systems and even genre necessitates. It also allows the publisher to communicate with its audience, which is another attractive quality of BRP Central. However, imo there is a need to also show the cross and backward compatibility of the system and have a place where unbiased discussions and comparisons can take place. Treating BRP as a separate variation of the game alongside the others also makes sense to me, so I favor putting BRP (in the form of the BGB) there and having a separate, neutral d100 folder. just a newbs 10c
  20. Apart from Advanced Sorcery and the forthcoming Horsechester adventure book, the Magic World seems to have very little official books for it. I'm guessing that means either the players are great at creating original adventures or adapting existing material. Looking over the comments in the threads, there are some products that lend themselves more to Magic World than others. I'd sure love to see a list of which BRP, Monograms and other publisher material are a natural fit for the system and which ones are pretty good with some modifications.
  21. I did consider OpenQuest, The Age of Shadow, Magic World and even BRP with the BGB. I am open to hearing about the benefits of the other systems, especially in light of GM and player ease. I only looked briefly at Renaissance but admit to ruling it out until its line was more developed and was unsure how disconnected it was from the Clockwork setting (which is one of the many other BRP settings I'd love to explore with my players in the future). I am still reasonably open at this stage and just need convincing.
  22. Wow, thanks for the responses. You guys raised some excellent points and have convinced me of the Runequest 6 route. I recently picked up the bundle of holding deal (thanks Allen and Loz) and have to admit that the length of the book did skew my perspective, especially as its been a long time since I GMed anything. I chose the fantasy route over CoC or Delta Green as I have never GMed either and I was concerned by the points deleriad makes about setting complexity as well as GM workload. However, RosenMcstern does make an interesting point about the simplicity of the CoC system. What do you think is the best route for a rusty GM that also wants to ease his way back into GMing without too much up front investment of time? Also, what do you think are great introduction adventure --> campaigns?
  23. I want to get my gamer friends back into rpgs and have decided the BRP route is the best way to do that, since it is well supported and easy for newbies to get into. My plan is to use a rules light system and a pre-made fantasy intro adventure in a no named world, that if successful would lead into a pre-made campaign in a pre-made setting. If that all works then I hope to get them into CoC and Delta Green. At the moment I am leaning towards using the Legend rules (rules light) with the RQ6 Caravan Intro adventure, leading into the Book of Quests. At some point I plan to transition the group over to RQ6 rules (more crunch and more magic systems) and set the world in Age of Treason/Koranthia. Soooo, my questions are: Does that plan make sense or would I be better off sticking to one ruleset from the outset? Are there other systems and starting campaigns that are great to hook players in?

    Shores of Korantia

This looks really interesting and will probably be the setting I will choose once I have gotten through all the great stuff I picked up from the RQ6 Bundle of Holding deal (thanks Lawrence & BoH for re-doing this). However, I am curious about The Age of Reason. I assume it is not necessary for Shores of Koranthia, but I would love to know if it is worth tracking down to help flesh out the campaign setting or not. It would appear that neither Mongoose nor Drivethru have the pdf available any more, which is a shame as I am convert to rules being searchable on a tablet. I would prefer not to get the hardcover edition if it isn't essential. Thoughts? Jae Edit: Any chance of a PDF deal on drivethru for both books and that adventure that Jonathan Drake released awhile back? Speaking of which, what has happened to Jonathans blog?
  25. Level up and super happy. Told my buddies to get on it whilst they can.
