1. Well, if you need a playtester or four, I happily volunteer my family >:-> -STS
2. Greetings ronnyquest. Glad to see another Cultist on here (Stormbringer, Nephilim, and Call of Cthulhu, oh my!) -STS
3. When watching a movie (any movie), you start picking characters with the other gamers watching the movie and have them all statted up in 5 minutes and use the movie like a "convention game" with a railroading GM As you read a book, you start statting up all the interesting characters "just in case" you need an NPC...in three different gaming systems "just to make sure". -STS
4. Argh! Are these beings part of the Mythos!?! Shuma-Gorath with tech and photo-chromatasphores...I think they would scare a lot beings on first contact. That, my friend is "muy awesomo", which is Spanish for Muy Awesomo! -STS
5. Oh  That was a joke... Ooops..sorry. :focus: A new Starship Troopers game that goes for gritty and hard core combat (like the book) instead of that glossy paper travesty that was put out by Mongoose (blech...) And since I'm thinking about it...In Nomine! Awesome game idea with a fairly...so so presentation. In Nomine could tie in with Nephilium in a most excellent way...of course, it would have to munchkin-y as all get out...but come on, it's about angels and demons using humans as literal pawns... -STS
6. I'm going to go with Trifletraxor on this one...need spoonfeeding. As far as the non-crunchy bits go, the Cova seem pretty cool...I get the impression they look a bit like Shuma-Gorath (for some reason ) though you don't describe them that way...and way more cool than a space cat! As for Skaven in space...oh yeah! Of course when you show up at the WH table with your Necron/Vampire Counts...you get odd looks...although High Tech Skaven (modded off orks??) would get some odd looks too...Bah! -STS
7. Ah, Space: Above and Beyond...I'd buy it, and now I shall have to look for it. Opinion follows: The show fails (as do all other TV shows about military stuff) in one respect...Pilots are not Infantry are not Military Police are not Special Forces.... The problem with military themed games/TV series is that every job in the Army is pretty lame after a while...the sameness begins to equate to boring. If there was a show (almost used with success by "Over There") that focused on key individuals in a unit that had all of the goodies instead of stretching credibilty to have a small group do all of that... Opinion ends: -STS
8. Hey...I've played the modern version of that game...Afghanistan:The Land That Everything Forgot!?! It's got warlords, terrorists, drug dealers, mercenaries, corporations, hippies and a military bent. -STS
9. Wow, a lot of traffic. Going from post to post…
10. Greetings all. Since BRP is IMO, the best gaming system out there, I would like to see how our BRP community goes about converting good ideas from other systems to the beloved BRP. I would ask that if you post something pulled from somewhere else, please put who made it. Also, if you disagree with how someone else does it,give your version and why you feel yours is better...simply saying "you're wrong" does nothing to further the hobby or your argument. So, here are some that I found already on the forums. If there is already a thread with this topic, feel free to merge it friendly moderator If there is a copyright issue, feel free to delete West End Games D6 to BRP by Wolverine (Nathan Baron) I'm using the equipment straight out of the BRP book. One thing I must point out is, because Star Wars is very heroic, hit points are worked out using CON+SIZ as a total. BRP is a very gritty system, and can very horrific when it comes to personal combat. A critical and that's scratch one player character. That's why I doubled hit points for heroic characters. That includes major antagonists, such as Darth Vader, to represent the threat they pose. Non-heroic characters, such as Stormtroopers and the like, then keep hit points as normal. A blaster bolt should fell them easily. I've decided that if you have 5D in a skill, a player simply adds +50% to the relevant skill base in BRP For converting characteristics, here is an idea: 1D = 8 2D = 10 3D = 12 4D = 15 5D = 18 New = Original WEG STR = Strength DEX = Dexterity CON = Strength SIZ = Roll for using normal rules INT = Knowledge + Technical divided by 2 POW = Perception + Technical divided by 2 APP = Perception + Knowledge divided by 2 Traveller to BRP by Stefan Matthias Aust Traveller/BRP Rules Fallen Future: Cyberthulhu Gaming by Sandy Antunes (Psuedo converstion from Cyberpunk) Fallen Future: Cyberthulhu Gaming GURPS to BRP by Aycorn (SIZ by Joseph Paul) Okay, as requested. Basically, it's like this = ST = STR DX = DEX IQ = INT HT = CON APP = APP or CHA WILL = could be translated to POW. Or not. SIZ = Racial maximums for some of the BRP games was highest roll plus the # of dice rolled I believe, which would take a 3d6 human to 21. That makes a 2d6+6 trait top out at 20 then. For SIZ you could consult some of the different weight to SIZ charts that were part of different BRP games. Jason has written that there is a SIZ chart included in the new one. Weight in GURPS does not seem to come into play all that much but there is a table for rolling it. You may need to wing SIZ for the spear carriers and NPCs though. In Superworld weight over SIZ 20 is found by wt(kilos)=2^(SIZ/8)*25. This does not work below SIZ 20, does anyone know what was used for that? Anyone want to take a stab at rearanging that formula so that you can input SIZ and it will spit out mass? That's really pretty much it. After that, just ignore GURPS ratings and plug in appropriate ones from BRP. If you understand BRP, that shouldn't be at all difficult. Only potential tricky part is that GURPS allows well over 18. You'd just have to make a decision - over 18? Or stop at 18? All in all, GURPS > BRP should be a piece of cake. D20 to BRP by me Ability Scores The same six ability scores used in D20 are used in BRP, with some additions. Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence transfer directly over to BRP without modification. Charisma becomes Appearance. Education is equal to INT+WIS divided by 2. Power is equal to Wisdom. For races that do not have a D20 corollary, use the following table to find their racial speed.
Racial Mod|Speed (default 8 for humans) 10’ round| 2 SPD 15’ round |4 SPD 20’ round |6 SPD 25’ round| 8 SPD 30’ round| 10 SPD 35’ round| 12 SPD 40’ round| 14 SPD 45’ round| 16 SPD 50’ round| 18 SPD 55’ round| 20 SPD 60’ round| 22 SPD 65’ round| 24 SPD 70’ round| 26 SPD
Ability score modifiers and attribute checks When converting from D20 to BRP, ability bonuses are lost. Make sure to remove ability bonuses from skills before converting. Classes BRP does not have classes, and class level is immaterial in conversion. Skills The difficulty of converting from D20 to BRP is that most of the skills used in D20 are very broad based. D20 skill ranks x 5% = BRP skill ratings Spells should be counted as skills. The level + 1 of the Spell is the Power cost to cast. The % of the skill is determined as follows (Level of the caster – the level of the spell) x 5% equals the skill percentage. Feats Feats will translate into a skill or act as bonus for other skills or abilities or as situational modifiers. Alignment There is no alignment in BRP. Damage Use BRP equivalents for weapons. Magic damage remains unchanged (although due to the low hp of BRP, you may want to reduce magic damage by ½ or by ¼ depending on the GM’s discretion) Hit Points Determine as per BRP (SIZ + CON)/2 Armor Class Use BRP equivalents, although magic weapons and armor should retain their bonuses (although instead of an AC bonus, it becomes an AV bonus) Rules The following rules are easily able to be shifted into BRP without any difficulty; Initiative, Actions per round, Injury and death, Movement and Position, Combat modifiers and Attacks of Opportunity. Difficulty Class To change a D20 Difficulty Class to a BRP difficulty modifier, multiply the DC by 2. I know there is a Dark Heresy conversion somewhere on here and I am looking forward to any others people may have. I will dig out my palladium notes soon and post those. -STS
11. Thanks, I appreciate that. I think I'll keep hp on the low side, but everything else looks good. I was thinking of maybe starting a thread of conversions to BRP to show how easy everything it is to move to BRP. If this can go in it, let me know so I can start collecting all of these in Word and then just cut and paste into a new thread. -STS
12. So basically 1D = 10% in a skill? When you get the stats converted, please post them, I'd be interested in seeing how you do it. For equipment, I assume you are just using analogues instead of direct conversion, correct? -STS
13. Enjoy it. Being a gamer is hard work and we all need a vacation sometimes -STS
14. GianniVacca, thanks. That site looks great, but since I am mono-lingual, it isn't really helping me, though it does give me a reason to learn French Time for babblefish. -STS
15. To be fair, it is was bit misleading of me to say "all traces of artificiality are removed"...while it is an option for an elf to be a very powerful spellcaster and fly around in a helicopter and have machineguns with magic bullets and a few bound demons...it quickly pushes the game into munchkin level. In the first playtest I had a magic using elf cyborg dual weilding a 30mm revolver and a magic staff, a troll hit man that used a demon bound club and a mute revenant that led a small group of undead. While those characters were good, as a GM, in the interest of game balance and tone, I instituted the increased skill cost per differing culture skill mechanic to still allow those characters, but at the cost of becoming powerful but very limited. While it is quite fair to say that it is entirely possible for a modern western female to become a Shi'ite cleric...it would be highly improbable. The same for in 1850, an Aborigine to travel the United States and becoming a cavalry commander. Perhaps a Russian steppe farmer in 1950 becoming an astronaught or an illiterate African death squad commander becoming a French astronaught or a Chinese submarine commander...or a Thuggee becoming a Cajun clan patriarch... Culture, nationality, race and developmental level all play a role in what is possible for your character (or you, for that matter). It is possible for all of those things to occur, but it will be exceptionally difficult and extremely unlikely. As far as money goes, I already have a good job. :deadhorse: -STS
16. The size is an issue. I've considered breaking into three "region books" or a "setting" book and an "equipment" book. I would be willing to go with either option. I started writing it and just kept adding to the same word file and now it's big. How it is broken up matters little to me. As for the price point, I personally couldn't care less. The only thing that I do care about is artwork and I can drop 3-4 grand into that if I have to. The book is done from my vantage point. It is getting edited now so that by the end of the year, all I will need is .jpg's and .png's to insert into the word file, PDF it and give it to someone to print. So, if I have it "my way", I will have paid for the art, the writing, the editing and everything else...but someone needs to print and distribute it. If I have the option, I would cut my share of the deal to zero dollars to have the retail price be about 20$...the cost to the publisher and the cut to store owner. This is neither a labor of love, nor a job. It is a hobby and I like to make stuff for other people to, hopefully, enjoy. Plus, I just really like game stats... -STS
17. It's not like they can never, ever, ever understand it...it's more along the lines of being difficult. Magic, Spiritualism, Divine Magic, Psionics, Technology, et al. all exist, but the methods for getting them to "work" are different. To solve the culture/game balace issue...I made skill lists for each of the 15 types of development and one I called universal. A character can pick skills from the universal list and ONE of the 15 cultural skill lists and buy skills as normal. If they want to learn skills from another culture, it costs double, and if they wan to learn skills from a third, they cost triple, etc. Thus they can learn skills from different cultures, but it is difficult and why would you want to learn how to drive a car, you can fly? Alternately, why would you want to learn how to cast fireball, you have an assault rifle with a grenade launcher? Several of the races live in "co-terminus" planes...as do the deities. The primary method of ensuring cultural cross pollination is historical precedent. From the Prologue (post #5)
18. Is moving from the WEG D6 system to BRP difficult? I don't own much in the way of SW WEG products, just Shadows of the Empire and the Imperial Sourcebook. My own experience with porting to BRP has been relatively smooth (with the exception of Shadowrun). If you have the mods you used, I would be interested in seeing them. I am always on the lookout for system port rules into BRP and D6 seems a bit flaky to me. Also, I completely agree on the combat oriented aspects of D20...combat is something that should either be avoided or made as quick as possible to reduce the chances of PC death...not somthing that should be spread out over 40 combat rounds (which WoTC seems to bragging about in some other forums...sheesh). -STS
19. Ok, I'll bite... How the world works...an odd question. I have been playing RPG's for about 20 years and I have never, ever thought "how does X setting work?" Generally, I look at a product and think "cool", "meh" or "blah". The discriminator tends to be the ideas and information contained within, and the completeness of the presented material. If I had to say how it works...(I don't really think I am understanding the question)...it is a fantasy world divided into three major factions (religious nations, technological nations and magical nations) that tend to follow racial lines (fey, humanoid and goblinoid) and how they all have to deal with each other because none of them is stronger than the other two, thus it is a balancing act between all three power blocs. These power blocs are not monolithic which serves to weaken them and allow PC's the ability to manipulate events (through their actions) on a very minor level with extreme effort, but world wide change is pretty much out of their hands. How the setting will use the BRP rules? I would hazard a guess with "as written" with 2 new attributes, two new rules for combat (both optional) and a new way to compute hit points which is viable for both organic and inorganic objects, regardless of size, and the addition of damage classes. As for buzz words...I was not aware that I was using them. Indeed, in this hobby, I had never given thought to buzz words since, to me, gaming simply doesn't move at a pace that lends itself to buzz words. I would probably be hard pressed to identify a gaming buzz word. Perhaps "dice", "setting", "book", "rules" and "feel" qualify as buzz words? As far as how the game sounds, well it probably does sound like Cyberpunk meets Sword and Sorcery...that is a big part of it. It is called an approximation. That description is a function of using commonly referenced or well known works ("settings" to use a "buzz word") to describe an unknown...attempting to describe an unknown with common terms is obviously a bit general since if I was going to be as specific as possible, I'd have to post about 300 pages on here to describe all the races and nations and history... As for being another take on RIFTS or Shadowrun...it is similiar...in the way that Star Trek movies are similar to Star Wars movies...they are in space, focus on humans, technology is advanced and there are aspects of fantasy...perhaps we shouldn't watch any more of that Sci-Fi...it's all the same with that focus on the future and technology... Do we need another game like this on the market? No, there is no need for any game to be on the market. Gaming is not necessary for life, therefore there is no need for the internet either...or porn or a tabacco industry, yet all of them exist, even without a need. What is going to make people buy it? Nothing at this point, since it is not for sale. As for what makes it unique or different...well it's a game, about roleplaying, with science fiction and fantasy...guess there isn't anything unique about it...so I guess you don't have to buy it Wolverine. I won't quit my day job As for lawerence.whitaker's question: Tech and magic are counter cultural and thus the difficulty in attempting to use both. For instance a being grows up using magic, everyday, all day. It's taught in schools. He has a job using magic. Then he travels to a tech city...guess what, he is not going to understand how to drive a car, or fly a plane or use a computer...why? Because his reality is different and it doesn't follow the same rules as another beings reality. Eventually, with time, he might learn how to drive a car or fly a plane but will never understand the underpinnings of HOW a car works or a plane flies...just as a technologically indoctrinated being will ever understand how a bunch of squiggly lines on a stone wall can teleport a being thousands of miles away in the blink of an eye. He will know that it works, but never understand how. Thanks for the feedback. -STS
20. I echo rust...Greetings Centaur66 and The Last Conformist. -STS
21. That was always one reason that I liked Palladium products...they aren't scared to give damage ratings like 2d6 x 1 million MDC which is equivalent to hundreds of millions of hit points... Most other game companies would just laugh and say "Death", but not K. Simbieda...he says "millions of points of damage, hell yeah!" I would say that GOO's would do thousands to millions of points of damage...and people thought there was no good reason for RIFTS It was made for battlin' 'Thulies!! (what we call Mythos critters in my house). -STS
22. I use four different "damage classes" Little Damage = LD = 1/10 hp. I use it for small games like bunnies and burrows and other really small characters Damage Capacity = DC = 1 hp. Used as normal. Vehicular Damage Capacity = VDC = 10 hp. Used for Vehicles Mega Damage Capacity = MDC = 100 hp. Used for big vehicles and heavily armored vehicles Ultra Damage Capacity = UDC = 1,000 MDC!!. I use it for big spaceships (Star Trek, Star Wars, ROBOTECH, etc.). A weapons class can only affect one class above... Thus LD can harm DC, DC can harm VDC, but not MDC, VDC can damage MDC, but not UDC and MDC can harm UDC...but I rarely bother even annotating it. -STS
23. For supplements...looking at one each for the major geographical regions: The bright lands, the giant lands, the elf lands, the endless jungle, the mountains and the technological west...and possibly a badlands one...if I can develop it more fully. I have a few short stories being written...working on a novel...but honestly, I can run adventures, but I can't write one to save my life. -STS
24. Tales of the Gold Monkey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Sounds very cool. Here is an idea...what about a bunch of psuedo "setting" books for BRP. We write them up, PDF 'em and put them in the downloads section. They would have to be "understandable", but not perfect and it would open up some settings. Does that sound anything like...rational? -STS
