  1. There seems to be a lot of ire directed toward Tolkien. Why is that? A unique setting would be good, but if you get too far out there people won't be able to relate. Look at Tailslantia. People understand what an Elf and Dwarf are. It is a fantasy element that can add a level of comfort to those new to the setting. That said there is no reason you can't play with them a little. Change things up. Dwarfs are farmers instead of miners. Nobody knows the Earth better and they can grow anything. Elves are the master artificers and live in advanced floating cities. Maybe ogres are a slave race created by the elves for manual labor. Trolls might be the Dwarfs answer to the ogre and were actually grown from plants. Hence the greenish skin, ability to grow back limbs (slowly) and vulnerability to fire. I'm sure I could come up with more, but I should probably save that for the Settings forum.
  2. As I don't own any GURPS material, and don't plan on buying any, I would be happy to see any kind of settings books from Chaosium regardless of what GURPS has done in the past.
  3. What the heck is that? And what is with the levels and XP? Our characters became pretty powerful. Skills got up to 200%+, Divine magic was in the 40 to 50 point range, but we limited Strengthening and Armoring enchantments to double. So a human who just happened to roll 18 Con and 18 Siz would have, at most, 36 general Hit Points. It might get a little higher with an Enhance Con cast on them, but only for as long as the spell lasted. And even then you could only double the Con if you could get enough Intensity on it, which we never did.
  4. While I kinda like the cover, I think it is obvious that the Chaosium guys are better at putting together rules than they are at marketing. Really I prefer it that way to the other way around. I don't understand how you can hate a font, but I guess I don't do that type of thing for a living.
  5. It looks like most people agree on what a Special/Critical should be. I wonder if this will be the default?
  6. I kinda like it. Not so sure about the cloak on the "Fantasy" character, but overall not a bad idea. I did like the World's of Wonder cover though. You can see a thumbnail of it on Pete's site. http://www.maranci.net/rqpastold.htm
  7. True, it is possible that Wakboth was more on Cthulhu's level instead of Hastur or Azathoth. If that is the case then the Gloranthan gods are toast.
  8. Our characters where cursed "to never know rest nor home", the upside of which meant that we could not die, as that would give us our final rest. Later, while running from some tentacled horror, as is always prudent in CoC, my character was grabbed and squeezed until his body exploded into bloody chunks. Always thinking of others one of the party stopped and picked up a bloody chunk and took it with him. He then fed the chunk, by placing it in a small bowl of blood to start, until I grew back. The character was never quite right after that.
  9. Concepts? What are you talking about? Humakt is the God of Death and Truth. Concepts have no power. Maybe the power to focus the meager power of mortals toward a common goal? That's not much. Sinking to the Silly Level. Glorantha is an Egg, outside of which Chaos reigns. The Chaos gods did invade once before, and Storm Bull called down a massive block of solid law on their leader. End of battle. Sure your average investigator is toast against even Cthuhlu, but how much chance does an adventurer have against a Gloranthan God? They would just rip your soul out of your body and have it for a snack.
  10. In the vein of failed Dex rolls, we had a sorcerer in our group who fell into every body of water that we attempted to cross. He quickly gained the title "The Soggy Mage". He is actually rather powerful now, but he still falls in the random pond every once in a while.
  11. Maybe we can have just a "Settings" forum for all settings. That way you can post about Glorantha or Deadworld or whatever, but it might not attract the notice of the Gloranthan "Sages"? Hmmm... Almost feel like we are trying to avoid the Spanish Inquisition.
  12. I can certainly just skip the Glorantha posts. Thinking about it more it might be a good idea to create a forum for Glorantha so that threads don't get posted in the general forum about it. But I am with Atgxtg, we should probably wait until the game is actually out before we start branching into different forums.
  13. I tried a couple and so far I prefer Game Table. http://gametable.galactanet.com/ It is simple and easy. If they start adding too many bells and whistles it just makes it harder to use.
  14. If she doesn't like it she can take it up with Chalana Arroy.
  15. We also have the instant death if head, chest or abdomen is severed rule. But we allow for the body to be repaired by a Heal 6 or Heal Wounds (with at least 6 points of healing) if it is done within 5 minutes. This means if you really want someone dead, you kill them and take their head. We have had a few deaths where their stats degraded to the point where they could not be resurrected by the time we got them to a healer. Also there is the requirement of a year and a day of service to the healer after resurrection.
  16. So how many stayed dead? Honestly with the availability of Resurrection as a 3pt Rune Spell getting characters back on their feet after they were killed was never to great of a challenge for us. Also, do you play that you die at 0 Hit Points? Or is there some buffer? We always played that you subtracted the damage you were under 0 from 10 and then made a Con roll times that number to see if you survived one more round. So if you were at -6hp you would roll Conx4 to see if you lived another round. The following round you lost another general HP, so you are now at -7, and then had to roll Conx3. Etc. That which does not kill us makes us stronger. That which does kill us makes us stronger still!
  17. There is only one category now, but when the game comes out we might add others. Maybe one specifically for Rules questions? Certainly another for PbP games. Possibly another to discuss optional rules? After that would depend on the traffic. So generally I am against adding other systems to this board. I am also opposed to adding a Glorantha board. Honestly I think it would invite argument. The Glorantha I play is based on 2nd/3rd edition RuneQuest. Everything since is ignored. I have no desire to see people arguing over what the latest Gregging means or what Greg thinks about this or that. I'm not going to boycott the board if any of the above is added, just giving my opinion.
  18. Hi Magistus! Yes, way back when I had the Worlds of Wonder box. We played with it a little bit, but with no support there was no reason to play it. We had a very strong RQ3 game going. If we wanted to play superheros we used Champions. As for FutureWorld, I have never found a SciFi game that had both a compelling campaign setting and a good rule set. I know others have played SciFi games with great success, but they never worked for us.
  19. Thanks for the reply badcat, your position makes a little more sense to me now. It seems we agree on basic resolution, saves, and skills. I would also say that the feats, prestige classes, and multiclassing system added flexibility to the game that was severely lacking in previous editions. As for them all being interwoven, well, that is the nature of the beast. What really went wrong with D&D3.x for me is the massive number of supplements. They had something that was working fairly well, but they wanted more money. So they keep putting out new supplements and that just ruined it. Power creep set in and soon it was impossible to judge how all these new things would work with everything else. Now you can have a cleric with the Extraordinary Spell Aim feat and the Magic domain cast Anti-Magic Shell on himself, but exclude himself from the area of effect. This means that all of his magic works but that anyone within 10' of him is without magic. Congratulations! You won D&D! Anyway, this forum is about BRP, which I am very glad of. To get back to the original thread, I like many others, would like to see a very well thought out and play-tested upgrade of the BRP system. I know some just want exactly what they had before, but I don't think that is a strategy for success in today's market.
  20. Badcat, you really don't think D&D3.x is an improvement over 1 or 2? I know there are a lot of things that many people don't like about D&D's current incarnation, but it is certainly better than what came before! Thac0? Non-weapon Proficiencies? Psionics?(!) D&D was an unbalanced, almost unplayable, mess! The hoard of house rules needed to make it playable was extraordinary. The only thing old AD&D has going for it is nostalgia. The new D&D is balanced, stream-lined, and easily playable with the base rules and no house rules. It's skill system is obviously heavily influenced by BRP. It may be a bit too mechanical for some tastes, but it is definitely an improvement over what came before. I also bought the Champions (the Hero System) up till 3rd edition and found each to be an improvement on what came before. I eventually stopped playing as that group fell apart, so I can't speak for the following editions.
  21. Some of the adventure paths for D&D3.x has sold very well. The Shackled City was a #1 best seller on Pazio's site for weeks. Also WotC also had their original Ashardalon chain of books as well. Even if they don't make as much money as the supplement books it is because of the adventures that people want to buy those supplements. I think at least some kind of adventure line is needed to get the system jump started.
  22. Honestly I would like to see an entirely new setting. For me most licensed settings are too heavily restricted. What is going to happen is already know, and they don't need your characters to save the world. The characters from the book are going to do that!
  23. So how do you determine how much Experience Points the characters get? How do you prevent it from just being arbitrary? The standard "get an experience check with successful use of the skill" system removes the need to guesstimate experience points. As for the Size stat, I realize it is not always the best, just like the resistance table, but it wouldn't feel like BRP without it. It would be like D&D without Armor Class or levels. The game might be better, but is it still D&D at that point? This is the main thing with MRQ. I think they tried to pull what Wizards of the Coast did with D&D3.x and make a new RQ that different, but still RQ. But in this case they kept the wrong stuff, or they kept the right stuff but changed it so that in didn't work well. They failed miserably in my opinion.
