  1. As successful community creators themselves, our Community Ambassadors Allan, Bridgett, Mark and Nick are all experienced in the pitfalls and pathways to independent publishing. Here are some samples of their community content work:Allan Carey's Miskatonic Repository release The Mummy of Pemberley Grange, is part of his 'Seeds of Terror' series of accessible and exciting scenarios for Call of Cthulhu that Keepers can pick up and run in one evening.Bridgett Jeffries's Miskatonic Repository release Sorrow in Tsavo is a Call of Cthulhu scenario set in 1898 Kenya and based on historical events.Mark Morrison's The Saltwater Inheritance was written in 1985 but first published (on the Miskatonic Repository) in 2019. It came runner-up in a White Dwarf magazine scenario competition, which, as Mark says, "is kind of like winning second prize in a beauty contest, but with more tentacles". Described as "Top-shelf, high-grade Gloranthan psychedelia", Nick Brooke's Jonstown Compendium scenario Black Spear is a lavishly illustrated, stand-alone mini-campaign for RuneQuest.
  2. -- L-R: Allan, Bridgett, Mark, and Nick -- Chaosium's Community Ambassadors support independent creators in our community content programs on DriveThruRPG. These programs enable fans to self-publish material for Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu, RuneQuest, and 7th Sea TTRPGs. Creators can offer their work free of charge, set a price, or offer it as pay-what-you-want. As successful community creators themselves, Allan, Bridgett, Mark and Nick are all experienced in the pitfalls and pathways to independent publishing. They are here to help with advice about the various aspects of creating and publishing a community content work, including ideas generation, IP issues, writing, editing, art direction, layout, publication, and preparing a title for print-on-demand. They can also direct queries to the appropriate person at Chaosium or DriveThruRPG if need be. The success of these fan-driven programs is evident by their thriving communities of creators and the rapidly growing number of titles available, with more added every week. The Miskatonic Repository is Chaosium's platform on DriveThruRPG for independent creators of gaming material for the Call of Cthulhu tabletop roleplaying game. It was launched in December 2018. We recently celebrated its 1000th independent title! The Explorer's Society established in March 2017, is our DriveThruRPG community content program for John Wick's 7th Sea RPG. The Jonstown Compendium, established in December 2019, fulfils the same function for gaming in Greg Stafford's world of Glorantha with the RuneQuest RPG, along with the QuestWorlds, and 13th Age Glorantha systems. We recently celebrated its 250th independent title! Later in 2023, we're launching a new community content program along similar lines for the Pendragon RPG! Contact our Community Ambassadors via our Contact the Team page.

  4. From our Frequently Asked Questions: Q: Did Greg Stafford own the first-ever copy of D&D sold, bought directly from Gary Gygax himself? A: TL/DR - Yes. As Greg himself told it in the now defunct Stafford Codex (retrieved via Wayback Machine) The First Dungeons & Dragons Game Ever Sold "I'd like to share one tale about D&D, from way back when. After high school I used to work for Bergamot Brass Works, a belt buckle company out of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Real hippie job. I'd take buckles, hitchhike around the country and sell them to shops. After a while, though, I moved to California and stopped doing that. My friend and business partner, Jeff Platt, remained in the Midwest, selling buckles (we were called Buckle-itis). Through the various circumstances described elsewhere, I'd decided to publish my first board game, White Bear & Red Moon, on my own. As I was finishing up work on it, I got a package in the mail from my old partner Jeff. His cover letter said, “I was picking up my catalogues from the printer the other day and there was this guy waiting for his stuff. I asked what it was, and he said it was a fantasy game. I said, ‘Hey, my buddy in California is doing one too! Can I buy one from ya?'" Of course the guy was happy to, and so Jeff sent me this strange little box called Dungeons & Dragons. Later on I wondered, “Heck, I wonder if that was the first one ever sold?" Well, I asked Gary Gygax if he remembered this incident and he did, and confirmed that it was the first one ever sold. Man, do I ever now wish that I'd not lent it to my DM! I never got it back!"

  14. Chaosium President Rick Meints has run collectible auctions across the world, but the Chaosium Con Collectable Auction is a very special one. He and Mike Mason will be auctioning a truly amazing array of rare collectables from the secret vaults of Chaosium itself at Chaosium Con II on Saturday April 15th from 3 PM to 5 PM. Reflecting on the process of sorting through the Chaosium vaults, Rick said, "As we slowly cleaned out the Chaosium warehouse to bring some order out of chaos we uncovered numerous treasures. You could open a dozen dusty boxes and find only bank statements, but then open a rusty filing cabinet and find a stack of mint copies of Different Worlds magazine in the bottom drawer. The greatest find was the “library”, where mint copies were stored for reference, and, um, never referenced… I doubt it had even been opened for many years." -- Rick deep in the Chaosium archives in September 2015 -- Full details about the auction are in the catalog. Download the complete 60 page Chaosium Con II Auction catalog here. Here are some examples of the more than 200 rare items on offer (note, all items are complete and in excellent or better condition unless otherwise noted. The pictures shown in the catalog are of the actual item being sold): Play Games. Make friends. Experience Chaosium like never before!
