  1. I just hope you folks are right and it is a matter of my attitude. But if it is not, then the consequences might be more relevant than you think. Forgive me this arrogant statement, but I do not publish fan projects any more, and I have a "slightly" higher point of observation than most of you. And if I am afraid that presenting Glyphmaster as an introductory ruleset instead of a vintage game constitutes a threat, I have damn good reasons to be!

I think not publishing fan projects is a great business decision on your part. It is important for you to keep the quality of your products at the highest possible standards. I think the glut of 3rd rate d20 products was the downfall DnD 3. Now when is BRP Mecha going to be ready ? ;)

As you previously mentioned pdfs represent a very small percentage of rpg sales, and since I don't think you will elaborate on the reasons you keep hinting at, I'll end my discussion with your own quote:

"That said, the existence of Glyphmaster poses no threat to anything."

  2. That said, the existence of Glyphmaster poses no threat to anything. It is your project, and it takes away your time, not someone else's. Just point out it is a "vintage" game for grognards.

Maybe the writers will point out it is a fun game using mechanics that formed the foundation of the BRP games that followed.

Glyphmaster does require the writers time, but it also seems to be taking up some of your time that would be better spent writing more excellent BRP products ! So get to it. :)

  3. In the way that I explained above: Chaosium could use RQ2 (its second best success after Call of Cthulhu) as the foundation for BRP. It did not, preferring to merge RQ3 and SB5. All of you tried to avoid this simple fact in your replies, but it is there, plain and simple: the publisher appears to think those other iterations of the system are better. Nuff said.

I don't think anyone here is avoiding facts. When you say that the publisher appears to think those other iterations of the system are better you are espousing an opinion.

I would be curious how much direction from Chaosium Jason actually received as to which rules were included. He says in the Afterword that his first BRP game was SB1 and he found the system and setting to be perfectly fused.

  4. But if the idea is using a "nostalgia" retro-clone as an introduction for new players, you will always find me strongly in the opposite camp. It is exactly the kind of operation that helps people who say that d100 is an outdated system spread their lies. And believe me, this is not a trivial problem. I say this having some knowledge about the sales of the Italian version of RuneQuest

Who is spreading the lies ? Where are they being spread and what is the actual impact ?

If the retro clone operation is a pdf and is a only of interest to a very small group of gamers, how could it possibly have the major impact that you are hinting at ? Are you suggesting it will contribute to the demise of a d100 system such as CoC or Eclipse Phase ?

  5. RuneQuest. But they recognize it because of Mongoose Edition, not Chaosium. Guys, the RuneQuest brand is still alive because the new edition is in the shops, not because the old glorious one is sometimes on e-bay. Get over it.

Of course the MRQ version is the reason that people of that age group recognize it. I would have thought this is obvious. :)

What exactly are we supposed to GET OVER ? Sounds kind of condescending to me. :?

  6. With the risk of annoying someone by posting in the wrong thread. Here are some threads about Fantasy Grounds with BRP:

I've been rpging pbp for about 8 years now. I play in a RQ2 game on :

I have been in a FG game for about 2 months now, with a good group and it has been fun.

  7. Hi all

I intend to continue running my long term (30+ years) Greyhawk campaign with BRP and then branch out into a Sci-fi setting and then Cthulu for my son who loves a bit of fear>:>.

Looking forward to converting Greyhawk and wandering through all the supplements for inspiration. So for me BRP represents a bright and intriguing future.

Do you have a group that you have convinced to make the jump as well ? Do you do any gaming online ( ie Fantasy Grounds) ? Are you going to use Classic Fantasy for BRP ?

  8. To just dip back to the original topic of this thread: "How do you think BRP is doing?"

I think it's doing great! Thanks to Alephtar Games and Cubicle 7, we have a steady supply of high-quality supplements, and the big fanbase produces monographs for a ton of different topics. Even if Chaosium did nothing, BRP is pretty much set.

    SGL.

Made a trip to the big Local FLGS to see what they had.

Still 1 copy of the BGB and the usual CoC stuff ( down on the bottom shelf).

Crusaders otAC and Dragonlines from Alephtar.

Clockwork and Chivalry books from Cubicle 7. ( eye level) ( which amazon.ca says aren't available yet )

Lots of MRQ1 and some MRQ2 stuff ( including Deus Vult) . ( eye level)

So it looks like the d100 rules are making their way through the distribution system. Of course none of the monographs will be on the shelves, which is a shame.

  9. I'm not an expert on FG2 but have had a chance to play 3 sessions in the Search for the Trollslayer module. We had a group of 2 UK gamers, 2 New Jersey gamers, and myself. The GM has an Ultimate license so I haven't bought a copy of FG myself (yet).

I think that either you will need to make modifications to the BRP ruleset yourself or find someone to make the modifications for you. I would think the best thing to do though is to have a few sessions with the ruleset before you start modifying it.

Take a read on this thread:

    http://basicroleplaying.com/showthread.php/1902-Basic-Roleplaying-released-for-Fantasy-Grounds-II?highlight=fantasy+grounds

There is a decent discussion of FG2 and mention of BRP ruleset mods for Stormbringer and Elric!.

  10. What is this steam that you speak of - some devilish trickery or tricky devilishness? The only Righteous steam is that which rises from the furnaces as Godly cogs are struck!!!

You're not an Alchemist are you?

Amazon.ca heretics - blast their eyes - have you tried contacting the good folks at Cubicle 7? Seriously, if it's pre-orders then it's not good enough - the first book has been out for a while now and The Alchemist's Wife hit stores at the start of September. Thou Shalt Not Suffer has been printed (our advance copies arrived at C7 offices today), so while it will still be a while till it gets to shops, it shouldn't be too long until pre-orders go out.

If the problem persists let me know and I will try and find out more :)

Well I pre-ordered the first two books July 26 and currently amazon.ca says it hasn't been released yet: :?

    http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/1907204903/

I looked on amazon.com and it is available there. I wonder if it is a pricing issue. My pre-order was $22 (including free shipping) on amazon.ca, and amazon.com has it currently listed at $34.99 + shipping. It is obviously a good deal so that is why I like to order using amazon.ca.

On my preorder of RQ2: Races of Glorantha they told me they couldn't get it a few months later and cancelled my order :(

  11. Damn Amazon.ca, I keep getting notices from them saying they haven't secured copies of the game ( and adventures) for my pre-orders yet.

Do you think you could get some copies put on the next steamliner headed for the new world ? ;)

  12. Quoted from a rq-rules mailing list post 2007:

The ultimate linkage would be to run:

Borderlands, followed by a trip to Griffin Mountain, after which they return to Pavis, run through most of the scenarios except the Cradle,

go through the Big Rubble, and then do the Cradle scenario.

Borderlands last scenario (7) has the PCs heading up to meet some people from Dykene, which provides the opportunity to go on into

Balazar and the Elder Wilds. The PCs could adventure there for a while, build up some skills and such, and then head back down to Prax

for loads of adventures in New Pavis and the Rubble before the Cradle arrives. - R.Meints

  13. It has been so long since I played FtF I wouldn't be a good judge. I usually play pbp games, so this is a great change of pace. It is nice to see an entire combat resolved in a matter of minutes ( or it seems like it is only a matter of minutes; probably a little longer than that, since Merek couldn't land a blow) . I will have to double check my schedule, but 2 weeks should work for me.

  14. I would definitely get the Gloranthan Classic package deal (if you have the funds readily available). You really need the Cults Compendium to run a Gloranthan campaign. For a longer campaign with lots of ready made material you can't beat Pavis/Rubble. Check out the page count of the books. The Pavis/Rubble ( 316 ) is much bigger and is very easy to link to Borderlands (302) and Griffin Mountain (256). Borderlands includes the Runemasters and Plunder books so it has less campaign goodness than the page count would suggest. The package deal is the mother of all Gloranthan sources. Years of campaigning goodness.
