I was surprised when I read the slightly rephrased description of the role of Daka Fal during the Greater Darkness. The changes aren't that big compared to the text in Cults of Prax, but my impression of Daka Fal being a fixture in the Court of the Dead already when Orlanth and his companions arrived down there in Hell was shaken by the revised text.

    CoP says

Cults of RuneQuest #2 The Lightbringers (CoRQ2) says

Heortling Mythologies gives this credit to the Silver Age hero King Heort, a (Kolating?) shaman in his own right, the human victor at the battle of I Fought We Won at the transition from the Greater Darkness into the Silver Age.

Now King Heort probably qualifies as the shared mythical ancestor of all Heortlings regardless of their actual lineage, which makes an identification as an incarnation of Daka Fal somewhat less upsetting.

Heort was a shaman, which means he would have been in touch with spirits, much like Daka Fal provides this contact with the spirits. The old Cults of Prax version could very well have meant that shamans like Heort could have met the shamanic entity Daka Fal in the Spirit World (or that Daka Fal appeared in their dreams or before their Fetch as a sending) and have learned the secrets of separating the Living and the Dead from one another, and then to have carried this into (their respective bits of) the Surface World (and by sending the dead there, the Underworld).

But the new version tells us otherwise.

Or what was left of it after the Gods War, slowly re-knitting under the administrations of Arachne Solara, applying the very matter of Annihilation that she had devoured in the shape of the Devil that had been sent to Hell by his Devil counterpart to glue the remaining shards of reality back together into a single whole, into a continuous Surface, with missing pieces re-emerging from mostly forgotten memories or just from some necessity of context. The seams of the new world would provide a stage for all the necessary consequences of adjacent reality, and over Time accrete a history solidifyng their reality.

Daka Fal is not only one of the Dead who need to enter the afterlife and remain there, he is the archetypical dead, and the one to receive all those who followed his path of mortality. He was there to receive the Lightbringers on their way to former Wonderhome where dead Yelm held court over all the other dead gods.

That Daka Fal walked the world at the end of the Greater Darkness is just another indication how wrong and unrelatable the Greater Darkness was. Here we have the first Dead, walking about and really admonishing his (involuntary) followers to recognize their station and to go where they were welcome in their new stage of existence.

Being dead is a stage of existence in Gloantha. It is different from complete annihilation (of any traces of self), or from transcendent ascendance to the Ultimate (the Source of all energies) through mysticism, to Liberation. The Dead are still a part of Glorantha, and in many cultures they make up a vaguely recognizable "body" of remains that may intrude into the world of the Living during their assigned holy day, like the procession of the Dead from the Nochet Necropolis into the city and the households of their descendants where they can demand the hospitality one has to give to visiting kin from afar.

Most Gloranthans, including even the majority of the Malkioni with Hrestoli roots, believe (and experience) re-incarnation of the dead, of entering a place of waiting in the Underworld before entering life in the Surface World again as a newborn. It doesn't matter whether you assign Ty Kora Tek's halls of the weiting dead like the Theyalans or whether you regard re-incarnation as being swept along Yothbedta's stream like the Kralori.

Daka Fal does not mind re-entry into Life, but until that time comes, the dead need to remain in their assigned place. To not do so means weakening the very cosmos that their rebirth would take place in.

Where did you read that text?  It is not in the lightbringers Cult book or prosopaedia.

Sort of, you need to read the box.

I did It, but does not explain what happen when you are an outsider. I mean, you enter in ernaldoli clan lands, and pay respect to the chief, lets say a dagger worth 80 L as a gifts and a jewel 60 L to the earth pristess. Is this reciprocate?. I am asking about how orlanthi society and others works with strangers.

    Thanks for your patience.

Gift giving is covered in the Treasure box on page 7 of Weapons and equipment. There is also an example of Gift giving in the Exchanging Masterwork Items, on page 9.

In your Ironhoof example, it depends on who the adventurer is, if they are a Grazelander, Ironhoof expects gifts and that's it. If the adventurer is acting as an emissary to ally Ironhoof and his half beasts (per the Dragon Pass board game), they would need a reputation roll (who are you?) and if they succeed, they can gain +1% reputation / 50L of the gift.

Thanks David. So different cultures same mechanic then?

  4. Hi,

I have a question for those who are more learned in those cultures. How does gifts giving work?

I mean, supose a character present himself before Ironhoof and as a token of respect he gifts him a golden torc valued 800L. How does It work? Does Ironhoof say "thanks, state your business to be here"? Does he give something in return? And if so, less, more or equal?.

what about an orlanthi chief? A lunar chief in Provinces? A pelorian noble?

    thanks

The boxes are there - I saw the pics posted on FB - and they will be sold there. So there is no delay.

Worldwide release on Aug 17 is hardly a delay.

You could sell the pdf version now and deliver the physical copies on august 17 so you dont disappoint... again.

Well, he was a hero - and a very successful one for a period of time. But, as noted, he was defeated by the Twin Stars and subsequently taken to one of the Lunar Hells. So unless someone frees him from wherever he is bound, there's no need/relevance to including him in the Prosopaedia.

When we have appropriate rules for heroquesting It Will be time for a rescue.

The Larnstings aren't really a thing, it is a title used something but it is not a real group or organisation. Snodal didn't make it but his son Siglat did - he's much more significant to the Loskalmi. The Luathans didn't make it but Rausa did. Srvulai are there, correctly spelled. And poor old Varzor Kitor just wasn't important enough.

Shamans are viciously strong, but I'm thinking the Hero Soul mechanic that will arrive with the Hero rules will kinda balance this? Although it still means that you have to be a hero in order to resist POW vs. POW from a decent Shaman...

    Irresistible Sleep = stronk.

(IMO, Sleep should have been a Rune spell. It's stronger than most of them anyway.)

Last time I read about it you add your hero soul to your Pow to resist even if you are not a Hero with "H" yet. This is already in a published supplement.  Do you remenber the green rock adventure in Sacred time?

Is it planned for the Hero rules, then?

That it's what I read about. Mastery rune is key for Heroquesting and powers you get from it. There is a new character sheet just for that. CHA, POW, passions, Runes and mastery rune plus techniques.

  10. I think Nelat is better, choose three heroquesters  (one for the creek, one for the stream and another for the Engizi) and make the ceremony like this... (We are water! , we are the river! , we are the One! , we are the Borg! ...well forget the last one, wrong universe😝 but you get the meaning. Heroquest together to the deep waters and Nelat to be purified. And hope to survive, or not, sometimes sacrifice must be made for the greater good.

You'll have to ask @kalidor who suggested a Tanian heroquest when a limited-size Moonburn would be a lot safer to control. That might still release Oakfed, but in a damp swamp Oakfed's options are limited, especially if your opposition controls the water levels.

I proposed it as a joke, imagining delecti's face I found it funny, and a not chaotic solution although brutal. Moonburn was chaotic because fire burns not moon. I usually follow Ernalda's lead and look for another way. Fire was defeated by water. Well, maybe Nelat will serve, sure as hell that undead won't survive.

There is a reason why the God Learners stopped trying to invade Brithos and instead cooperate with the Zzaburi when Umaliath, the biggest of the firebergs that resulted from the Battle of Tanian's Victory, re-surfaced on the western seas and threatened to collide with the western islands. Those fires will consume any stuff with even a slight water association. The neighoring Lismelder had better be prepared to flee all the way to the Dead Place to escape such a fire, and Nochet and other places along the river would be doomed. Styx Grotto might explode in flame, as well as the Marzeel River, while the Skyfall lights up as Tanian's fire attempts to return into the sky.

Hey you can't use nuclear weapons without a little collateral damage hehe 😈😈

Simple enough, never set foot in the marsh or venture in very deeply, only destroy those undead that come to the fringes, shrink the swap size and eventually they'll come out to play... burn your dead so they cannot be made into undead. Everyone learns to release undead and the corpses and or skeletons whatever need to be brough out of the swap to be burned. Small raids to the fringes may be able to deplete rank and file undead over time if done with coordination? Curious why attempts have been made to venture deeply into the marsh for any reason? Seems like a suicide move from what has been printed? Has anyone thought to use Greek fire on the marsh archers at a time? Forget drain the swamp, how about burn it?

I vote for a Tanien heroquest, water gone and a lot of crispy undead with a garnish of crispy blackthorn trees.

Except... Duncan just took out a stack of them, and when he had the perfect opportunity to Sneak Attack (as any sane person would have), he yells to get their attention...

so while I get the Sardaukar displaying this Humakti "I can die and it's ok" mentality, Duncan displays the "I will die with honour" (and the appropriate sword skills) of the Humakti.

Yep, but I was talking about the "ritual" in Salusa Secundus. It was the only part I showed them. I told them that could be a Humakt battalion while Morale spell was casted.

  15. This weekend my players were choosing their characters. One of them asked me about humakt and the cool spell Morale, and I really didn't have much idea about it. Not until cults book is out. But I had an idea and I show him the scene in Salusa Secundus (dune movie) and the sardaukar ritual. Now I just don't have one Humakti but Three of them!!! 😂😂😂

I have no good title so...

so let see my "use case"

Jojo is heroquesting for his Orlanth initiation. Then he meet the second son to hear his "lesson".

but Jojo wants to learn more, for a long "time". For example he wants to learn perfectly stormspeech (90%), language he doesn't know or so few before... or anything that the second son masters and accepts to share.

as a GM what will you do ?

    - Jojo thinks he learnt the stormspeech but in reality he get +1d6% (or 0)

    - Jojo really learnt the stormspeech and obtain 90%

    - Jojo is "ejected" from the god plane because it is not the template of the quest

    - something else ?

would you apply some dice rolls / resistance / etc... ?

and what impact in mundane world, is his quest longer than others ?

because, at the end of the day, if there is not something limiting the quester, we may imagine that a character may start the quest with few skills (not an adult) and finish it with all the skills (and maybe some other stats) required to become a priest or a runelord ?

Without heroquest mechanics we don't know. Maybe after summer we will finally get those.

These misguided entities are usually beyond the concern of Yelm, barely worthy of being foes.

Have you seen who is the Solar Emperor? In order to join his cult, you need to be an initiate of the Red Goddess. As it's the daughter of the Emperor's son, everything is clearly in the order of things. The cult of Yelm will clearly be upset with any chaos upsetting their order. As Yelm's daughter can control chaos, where's the problem?

Sorry. I only have RQG, equipment book, smoking ruins, glorantha sourcebook and griffin mountain. I don't know how trusted can be information in internet.

Well, for starters, Yelm overcame Jokbazi, a Predark opposition, as prerequisite to become Emperor of the World, as the third of such obstacles (Basko the Black Sun being the first, Molandro the Earth Walker being the second, more substantial one), according to the Black Sun write-up and a throwaway line in the RQ2 RuneQuest Companion Jonstown Compendium snippets.

The Predark (a term coined by the Orlanthi, not the Solars) are a regrettable side effect of using Creation. No act of Creation is pure enough to avoid some Chaos creeping into the world, which may have been why the Solar Emperor opted for Stasis after overthrowing his predecessor.

Jokbazi? Who was this entity? Some sort of Wakboth? Sorry guys, as Nick Brooke would say, my glorantha-fu is weak.

The only myth that says he was there when Chaos came to Hell is an Orlanthi one.  In the Yelmic myths, he is accepting the submission of the Rebels who sacrificed themselves to fuel his rebirth.  So I don't think he will necessarily see a distinction between Orlanth and Wakboth (submits, sacrifices himself to become time etc).

Sure there is a Huge difference between Orlanth and the PreDark. Maybe Chaosium's Keepers of Knowledge know otherwise.
