and I kind of like RQ/BRP's Spirit Magic over the Mythras Spirit Magic because you can "scale it."

You can use the Progressive Folk Magic, a house rule for MYTHRAS. It's Folk Magic with scaling.

  3. Regarding Dwarves and their SIZ: In MYTHRAS 3rd Edition [since 2018] there is an update to make Dwarf SIZ more suitable.

So the "Dwarf Problem" isn't anymore.

And the posting above is right: MYTHRAS is the better, modern LEGEND.

That KS is what brought the original Apple Lane / Rainbow Mounds back into print, and AFAIK/IIRC it's exactly as per the original.

Unfortunately, the only printed products of the RQ CLASSIC-Line are: RQ2 Core Rules and the RuneQuest Old School Resource Pack.
The rest is only PDF so far.

I believe additional family-history information is planned to some of the upcoming supplements (e.g. Robin's P&BR), but I could be mistaken...

And the JC-supplement Early Family Histories is a work in progress, also.
The autor said that he will update the PDF whenever someone comes up with new homeland histories.

So we have two opportunities in this matter: the official releases and the fanmade stuff.

  6. I'm only a reader, but:

    Favorite NPCs

    - definitely Tulina, the most interesting Lhankor Mhy character I've encountered so far. Very complex with three different "lives". But that's the reality: One person isn't just a Warrior or just a Priest. The Warrior is maybe a family father, too. So the NPCs in this supplement all take different roles in their relationships which make them multi-dimensional.
Take for example the Rubble adventurer Tarik Stoneface. He's an adventurer and is often getting in danger. But he's also a widower and mourns the death of his wife. His actions are driven by his family ties, too. Or even more so.

    - next in line is Farhad A Yanafal, the Ex-Lunar. He only wants to live a life in the new world after the war, in a society wherein he was the big enemy in the past. He's now driven by his dark past and hopes his inner secret will never be discovered. The whole character and his social network is purely drama and tension.

But all of them are very interesting, with a lot of drama and subplots.  Sometimes you're reading the profession and think "a, initiate of X or Y, so I know what's this character is like", and then you read the description and discover a wholy new image of the mabye ol' Gloranthan tropes.
For example, a character like Dalsa Jael isn't your typical Chalana Arroy-Initiate.

All of the characters come with tight social networks, allies and enemies, full of drama and plot.
Even if one or two things of a character are a bit of a chliché, the character profiles in whole are so complex, that the rest of the knots and threads are interesting and dramatic enough to counter these details.

I'm reading it right now. It's excellent and one of the best [useful] products in the JC.
Just one thing: There are many typing errors and sentences which aren't going anywhere. Seems very rushed.

But the quality of the supplement [content] is topnotch and a wonderful resource for GM's.

I know more current RQIII players than Mythras players.

I don't want to start some kind of flame war regarding RQ editions.
MYTHRAS was mentioned in this thread as an example and became a topic, that's why I commented.
In case of MYTHRAS the older editions RQ2 and RQ3 are just historical anecdotes.

From the point of view of an RQ2 or RQ3 player this could look different, for sure.

Likewise. Similar to Martin Helsdon's Armies & Enemies, this is something I expect to (eagerly) wait for in POD+PDF so I can peruse it in my armchair.

At some point, I'm just going to need to face facts and get a new "Glorantha stuff" bookshelf.

Call me an old man from the past, but for me, only printed works are the real deal.
In special case of RQG, which I only read but don't play [my house system is MYTHRAS]. I just like Glorantha and the look of the books.

PDF is nice for something like the Jonstown Compendium and I've bought all things in PDF as well, but I don't want the Chaosium books just as digital files.
PDF feels dead, cold and virtual. I want the haptic experience and the certainty that I own the stuff I've bought.
And as an aside: real books are easier zu read than hundreds of PDF-pages.

And in 40 years, my PDFs now are nothing worth, I guess. But the books on my shelf keep their value.

These are the reasons why I want all the RQ Classics to be published as PoD.
Because PDFs are nice, but pale in comparison with the real stuff.

Organization ranks and skill thresholds are from RuneQuest 2 and 3 requirements for becoming Priests or Runelords in cults.

Yes, but it's 2020 and RQ2 and RQ3 are decades in the past. MYTHRAS is the current big, universal D100-system.
Furthermore, the "thresholds" in MYTHRAS are much more abstract and broader [means: more flexible] than the RQ2-priest ranks.

Or, in other words: MYTHRAS is a whole different beast than old RQ2/RQ3.

Any chance of these being published in a hardback collection, or is it another case of the quality of the original scans not being up to it? That’s something I’d love to have on my shelf.

520 pages in a heavy tome?
    Hm, let's see.

I'm very interested in the PoD conditions [format, price...], too.

Right, "thresholds" -- the requirement to display a level of mastery of a skill before even trying something more complex. I always liked those, though they could lead down a path to excessive crunch.

This idea is the whole point of the MYTHRAS system with its ranks in organizations [like Cults, Brotherhoods etc.]. The "thresholds" are coupled with certain percentile values in certain skills.
Almost all of the magic systems of MYTHRAS are using this threshold-framework. To "unlock" specific magical powers you have to reach skill levels/ranks.

And (though my memory is a little rusty and, admittedly, I never actually used them in play), I got the impression that the Mythras/RQ6 rules for mysticism had a strong whiff of a Ki Skill lineage.  Presumably better playtested.

The Mysticism rules of MYTHRAS are a toolkit to model a magic system whererin the magic is gained through willpower [either meditation or asceticism].
Because it is a formal system you can illustrate it with the setting fluff you want: Jedis, Wuxia, the DnD-Monk, the mystic with supernatural powers etc.

Mysticism needs two magic skills: Meditation and Mysticism

Furthermore, MYTHRAS has its own PSI Rules: in the supplements Luther Arkwright, After the Vampire Wars, Worlds United and M-SPACE.

The Mysticism rules are in the MYTHRAS Core Rules, with additional talents in Luther Arkwright, Mythic Constantinople, Worlds United and After the Vampire Wars.
Another take on Mysticism Rules is the Monk class in MYTHRAS' CLASSIC FANTASY.

Sales of Armies & Enemies are pretty much stalled now, but have reached a respectable number.

I've bought everything from the Jonstown Compendium but not Armies & Enemies.
The reason is: I'm waiting for the POD option.

So I guess there is a bunch of people who will buy your book in other format. And most people who bought your PDF will buy the printed version as well.

FWIW i feel that some of those who struggle with the whole Yelmalio-Elmal-Yelm issue (or indeed with other Gloranthan myths) is that they have a  fundamental and deep seated  misunderstanding of Mythology...it is never intended to be an objective  world view  in either an ontological or epistemolgoical fashion.

I'm a person with a scientific background in philosophy [and mythology] and my own writings and settings all are deep into mythological things.

For me, RQG is an RPG in a fantasy world. Straight and simple.

Don't judge people only by their opinions on a commercial Fantasy RPG.

  16. I would just like to say that I like what Jeff is doing with Elmal. I don't like the 100 different sungods and variations of Yelmalio.

For me, RQG is the best way to handle Elmal.

  17. Rush is my favorite band, and even if I don't listen to them everyday I still coming back to their albums quite some times.

I discovered them in early 2000s as an university student who was highly alienated from other, "normal" people and a normal lifestyle.
Then came Rush: their virtuosity in musicianship, their concept albums, their sound.

And Neil Peart and his lyrics: sci-fi, fantasy, sociology, philosophical and psychological topics, the great questions of life, mankind, transcendence.
I've bought all of the albums and listened to Rush all day through.

I have so many favorite Rush songs from their catalogue and over the decades [but I have to admit that "Vapor Trails" is the last Rush album I really liked].

People often say that Rush is a band for musicians, and even if I'm into prog and artrock, there is so much soul and emotion in Rush's music.

If someone ask me to define the band Rush and their music I would say just one word: Grace.

    "When we are young
Wandering the face of the earth
Wondering what our dreams might be worth
    Learning that we're only immortal
    For a limited time"
    [N. Peart]

Also, I think it's a generic title that applies to the original Takenegi form and all subsequent Masks.

Yep, Jeff wrote: " The Red Emperor is a living god, the son of the Red Goddess. He has no personal name, only titles. He is Moonson, "

  19. I'm confused by the fact that people complaining about Sorcery as "not for adventurous characters" in a game where all characters have a big bag of spells [Spirit Magic + Rune Magic].

In Glorantha your ordinary fighter is more wizard or sorcerer than any fighter in any other RPG. Even without sorcery.
