Although there are more combat options available that still make the PCs at 100% super formidable, giving up the extra attacks granted by the higher skills makes my players super leery of converting.

I've toyed with doing an heroic feats system for Masters, similar to Land of Ninja for RuneQuest 3 or even MRQ 1 if you remember that. So characters with skills at 100% would spend Magic Points and then be able to activate the feat attached to that skill that they have bought. So for Close Combat we would perhaps have a "Flurry of Blows" which would give the character a multi-attack, or "Decapitation" which would be an instant kill on a hit that does damage. But its a glimmer in my mind's eye, would need vigorous playtesting, and to be honest I think could easily be replicated by characters having the appropriate magic + skill combo. Existing combat options do a lot of this already, at lower levels, and it gets a bit cheesy when you extend it to non-combat skills.

  2. I've not hit the 100% skills in my OpenQuest Thursday game yet (it is only 17 sessions young 🙂 ) but my Skyraiders of the Floating Realms game (30+ sessions) which has virtually the same experience system, we hit 100% in magic for one character and close combat for another a couple of months ago. They've now settled into the idea that the respective characters are masters in their respective skill areas , and are quietly working away at pulling up skills which have fallen behind. Skyraiders also has other things to spend Growth on, such as Skyships (they have a small fleet of those!) and their Skyisland base. The latter idea - adventurers home bases- is coming in the OQ companion. The characters form an Adventurer's Association and have a shared base they can spend growth on to improve. With things like Libraries, Magic Ritual areas, Barracks for men at arms henchmen.

So would give them the IP back and let them invest in new areas to broaden their characters.   100+ skills have gone and I can't say I miss it. The multi-attack rule was a mess, and really fell apart in River of Heaven were people expected to use it along side various rulings for automatic fire!

GORE – Utilizes a d100 percentile dice system that is fairly rules-light and based on OpenQuest,

Quick correction here, GORE is based on the MRQ1 SRD

It actually predates OpenQuest release wise, with its one and only release coming out in 2007, while OQ was released in 2009 🙂

  4. Opps that's a mistake, which should be deleted, and will be in v1.02 that will be issued as a pdf shortly and will be the version that goes to print.

Its an oft hand reference to the guidelines in the Life-Cycle of a Character rules on page 221.  But since those are more guidelines rather than hard rulings, its wrong of me to say they are the "Veteran Character Creation Rules".

Perhaps one for the OQ Companion?

  5. Wow! I never knew about this, and picked up a copy as a result. If I had come across it at the time I would have been all over it.

"RQ IN SPACE!!!" that's what my teen age self would have cried with glee 😄

My older self is analysing it and critically dissecting it, like it did recently with Games Workshop's Judge Dredd RPG 🙂

In any case I'm really looking forward to things like the One Magic System, I've got a couple of friends I'd like to introduce to RPGs and having a really simple, straightforward way to ease them in without overwhelming them with options is a major selling point (not that OQ is all that overwhelming)

The One Magic System arose out of convention game play, where I found no one was really keeping track of magic point spends, and spells that were variable depending on the magic point spent on them also confused new players.  So I simply removed magic points, gave variable spells fixed/randomised effects and combined the three spell lists.

This blog post on OpenQuestRpg.com goes into more detail.

  7. Its a busy year for OpenQuest. Not only is the main rulebook getting a new edition, but there's five releases this year that the Kickstarter funded, plus at least one (the Duck Crusade) that is outside of that.

I've set up a page on OpenQuestRPG.com to keep track of all the books in development/released 🙂

This currently only lists the official OpenQuest releases, because that is what I'm focused on at the moment.  Eventually I'll get round to producing a list of 3rd Party releases with links as a web page too.

  8. Yes, and the other supplements that the KS funded 🙂

Which are... OpenQuest Dungeons, The Saga of the Savage North, The Clock Work Palace, and of course The Book of Duck (working title)  🙂

  9. So I'm coming to the end of getting OpenQuest 3rd Edition out there 🙂

As reported in their own posts, but duplicated here for completeness and for folk getting email updates.

The OpenQuest Quick-Start The Lost Outpost is out as a free pdf.

OpenQuest 3 itself is available to preorder Worth mentioning as well as giving you instant access to the pdf, it also gives you a pdf/POD version of the OpenQuest Companion when it comes out later in the year. Also this is your last chance to get the limited edition signed and sent printed version , with endpapers, ribbons and colour plates.

So nearly there, general release estimated mid May once the backers/pre-orders have gone out.

  10. I’m pleased to say that the main OpenQuest 3 rulebook is done and off to print proof, so it’s time to open up a pre-order.

I’ve set up two options for pre-ordering OpenQuest 3rd Edition if you missed last year’s Kickstarter.

    • OpenQuest 3 Signed and Sent (£25) – Better quality print, ribbons, endpapers, and five colour plates, signed by myself and sent directly to you.
    • OpenQuest 3 Print on Demand (£10) – Print on Demand via drivethrurpg.com.

Both come with immediate pdf downloads of the book, along with the OpenQuest Quick-Start: The Lost Outpost.  Also when it is ready you will also receive at no extra cost the OpenQuest Companion in PDF and at cost Print on Demand.  Also, purchase of either of these entitles you to buy a selection of Add-ons that were available to Kickstarter backers.

This pre-order closes on Sunday, May 9th 2021.

  11. I am pleased to say the free pdf version of the OpenQuest 3rd Edition Quick-Start, the Lost Outpost is now available:

This pdf is designed to get players and Referees up and playing OpenQuest, with the minimum of preparation.

    It contains the following sections.

    • Characters. A rundown of what an OpenQuest character is made up of, both in terms of numbers and concepts.
    • Quick Rules. A concise version of the OpenQuest rules, enough to play the adventure.
    • Combat. The rules for physical combat.
    • Magic. The basic approach to magic, known as Personal Magic.
    • The Lost Outpost. An introductory adventure set in OpenQuest’s example setting, the Empire of Gatan.
    • A set of six pre-made characters. Players should pick one and get ready to play.

Here's the cover by Jonny Gray.

  12. I've reinstated the downloads section of the D101 Website, where you can pick up character sheets, demo adventures and other game aids.

So far for the D100 fan it has the form fillable, printable, black and white versions of the OpenQuest 3, River of Heaven, and Skyraiders of the Floating Realms character sheets.

  13. After another round of edits, both by me and by the backers, the final pdf is done and off to print proof. Also the OpenQuest Quickstart Rules + Adventure, The Lost Outpost, is done bar a final check by my editor.  So delivery of final pdfs in the next week or so 🙂

It features this wonderful piece of art by Dan Barker, Granny Tier who is the pc's patroness in the Lost Outpost.

  14. Quick update.

At time of writing backers of the campaign will be getting two zines.

Grogzilla issue 2 itself, a collection of articles and adventures for Crypts and Things, Monkey and the work in progress that is Slumberland.

The Duck Crusade which has grown into a zine of its own, since as well as the OpenQuest adventure + characters, it now has a gazetteer of the setting, with an article on how to turn the adventure on its head and use it for the Cultist opposition (for which there will be another set of characters).

Currently we are funding this as a third rpg-in-a-zine, and are about half-way there with 4 days to go.

  15. I've jumped into Kickstarter's ZineQuest promotion with Grogzilla #2, which is the follow up to last years...Grogzilla #1 😄 At the heart of it is an OpenQuest powered adventure called the Duck Crusade, which is a Grimdark Quest with a firm sense of humour, much like the early GW Warhammer Fantasy Battle releases (McDeath for example).  It features the Crusader Ducks of Fort Fury, who are trying to regain their homeland which has been overrun by Cultists of Corruption who worship the Great Terror Lizard, GROGZILLA!

The Duck Crusade is a one-shot adventure, with its own self contained setting and a set of six pre-made duck characters, so you can just pick it up and play it in one to two gaming sessions.

Dan Barker is on art duties and he's already produced this illustration which will grace the back cover of the zine.

If you fancy backing it, here's the link

  16. Ok if you missed the Kickstarter, but still want either the Pdf/POD or Signed and Sent version which is the properly printed version, you can pick it up via my lastest Kickstarter as part of the ZineQuest 3 promotion. You get the main rule book, the Quickstart adventure/rules (The Lost Outpost) and the OpenQuest Companion.  Also by backing the zine you get an OpenQuest adventure, the Duck Crusade.
