  1. Its a fair point @TrippyHippy but I think people like to keep to a setting or genre and play more a campaign game rather than short one-off scenarios. BR:UGE is so diverse and I guess people use it in various different modalities. I've seen people on BRP ask for Stone Age scenarios to far future Space Age settings, and anything in between. If the settings were non-specific and easily convertible to various settings, I think your proposal would be useful.

I tend to decide on a specific setting, either create the detail or use existing scenarios and then pose a number of dilemmas for the players and see where it takes us. I never know what the players will do and tend to make stuff up on the hoof with anchor points of events I have decided will happen in a timeline independent of their actions. That's the style of play I've always liked.

Having said that I do cannibalise other ideas from stuff I've read, movies and other published scenarios. Sometimes a scenario works in the setting, most often it doesn't but if I can lift ideas from it then I make some changes and use it.

It would be interesting what other people think though and if there are any creators willing to say what they are working on.

  2. Although I was part of the editing and proofing and contributed a small part, I was focused on individual words, sentence structure and being consistent and coherent in the text and it is only now when I see the whole document that I recognise the entirety and magnitude of the project. It's massive.. just like trying to traverse the Rubble.. it's a bit bigger than you thought and just as dangerous.

If you are interested in running a campaign in Pavis, in my opinion, this is essential. It may not be canonical, or maybe it is for YGMV. For those worrying about the mythology, consider it as the path of the initiate.. as things progress, more of the truth will be revealed and become clear in later volumes. Be patient little one, good things come to those that wait.

There is so much information in this volume and it brings the New and Old Cities together. It is how the Rubble locations augment and join these population centres to create interesting stories for Adventurers to explore, make a narrative and perhaps die in, maybe on the end of that diseased broo spear or beginning a new existence as part of an expanding and imperialistically-minded gorp. This is the kind of history you want to make, either as a GM or a player.

The scenarios are interesting and thoughtful and will challenge and possibly confuse Adventurers as they travel along the road of the true path for Pavis. The GMCs are well thought out and brought to life, ready to aid or thwart the Adventurers and all have Stat Blocks to aid harassed GMs.

Some of the GMCs are quirky, some are useful and a few are deadly. Who wouldn't want to be killed by Hargran the Dirty? It's not everyday that a King of Pavis can be bothered to get out of bed to kill some upstart Adventurers. Perhaps you want to mint your own coins to fulfil that childhood ambition of seeing your face on some money. It's in this volume and it's a possibility, if you can manage to take control of the Pavis Mint for a few hours. Or perhaps you self-identify as an Aldryami? Well you're in luck, it's in this volume too, as well as lots more. A bit like Chhotomai's Spice Kitchen.. it's hot and spicy.. unless you're an Uz, in which case it could do with more seasoning and some of those self-identifying Aldryami.

    Don't hesitate.

    Buy it.

If you can get your hands on a copy I believe the Cthulhu Britannica Keepers Guide had a blurb in it on Crowley. Since I don't own it and only briefly flipped through a copy that a friend had I might be wrong.

Oh yes.. and also the Green and Pleasant land has a small section. Both are a paragraph or two on biography rather than how to integrate him into a game session. You will get more from Wikipedia and I'm sure the G&P Land is way out of print. I haven't access to my stuff at present but I think it was a Games Workshop production late 80's or early 90's.

  5. I should have said I accidentally used his picture as the set of quintuplets grown in vats in an underground complex in the Grünewald to cause chaos in Berlin by integrating into the power structures of the Ringvereine, SiPo, FreiKorps, KPD and the Black Hundredists. My players spotted the picture of Crowley before I did. I had just done a random search for evil-looking, bald men

The Chekists killed the KPD spawn which gave the Investigators a way in to what was going on.

  6. Apart from what @AndreJarosch said, I only remember fleeting references to Crowley in published material.

However, I used him in a recent scenario that I wrote for 1920 Berlin, inserting him into documentation that they found with links to the German Theosophical Society etc. Most of the research I did was through Wikipedia and either followed links in the text (Theodore Reuss, for example, aka Carolus Albertus Theodorus Peregrinus who was a German tantric occultist, freemason, journalist, singer and head of Ordo Templi Orientis). I also interwove stuff with the Rosicrucian Kabbalistic tradition and had a Golem (The Golem of Prague) rescue one of the protagonists from a FreiKorps execution squad and at the same time incidentally rescuing the Investigators who were facing the same fate for treating a wounded Spartikist. I played a bit with the timelines but it really didn't matter.

There's lots of stuff, with seriously interesting characters, that, if they weren't Cthulhu cultists, should have been. This one intrigued me greatly..

I think I'd agree with the reviewer in the article posted by Andre in wanting to keep my players on the outskirts of the power structures of the Golden Dawn, but that's your decision.

Incidentally, I'm back in Berlin for Christmas and have decided to visit some of the sites I used through the three interlinked scenarios and take pictures to post on our players WhatsApp group. I need to make my players make SAN rolls again.. evil GMs like me need to spoil their Christmas peace

  7. There has been a lot of discussion about tax systems in Glorantha and elsewhere and I thought I'd share the tax on Salt taken from historical documents ( @Joerg )and made up (me) to be used in 1520: Renaissance.

As background, Salt was the major produce of Lüneburg and was sought after for preserving the fish caught in the Baltic region and salted at the Skåne Market before being transported around Europe. Preserved fish was one of the major sources of wealth for the Hanseatic League. I've included the Word document if anyone wants to use it

  8. Somebody had asked about character sheets for BRP recently, and I was too lazy to look it up, and too tired (its been a long day and my poor fingers are tired too)

I thought I'd share my character sheet with the few Renaissance fans on here.. and if anyone can make this PDF printable .. I'd give them a big kiss or a pat on the back if that is more to your liking

I can provide the Word document too if that is easier

giving that theme of potato bread a different angle.

I have to say as a (Northern) Irish person... there has to be potato bread... not Kartofflebrot @Joerg (no spelt or rye polluting the glorious taste), but whether you call it fadge, tatie bread, potato farls or boxty (Irish is bacstai) ... its a floury potato bread and delicious, toasted, frilled or fried.. your choice

YGMV... mine has (Norn Iron) potato bread and isn't associated with any foul beasts of chaos

If you want more potatoes, you might take the plot of Jabberwocky and turn it into a massive heroquest.

  10. I was looking to see if there are any published official versions of sorcerers in RQG, apart from the one in the pre-gens of the Starter pack. I also have RQ3 versions but not RQG

I appreciate your help in advance

Import duties at ports, amount depending on the port, IMG.

I have been trying to work out a Tax system for my Hanseatic Campaign and it was an interesting exercise which ended up with the producers having to pay to make goods... that meant starting again. But @Joerg and I eventually cracked it (City import tax of 3%).

However, an interesting point I read was that the toll, introduced in 1567, by the Danish Crown at the Øresund Sound was 1-2% of the Cargo value. The amount of taxes levied accounted for two thirds of the Danish States income in the 16th and 17th Century.

Another amusing bit of information was that the value of the cargo was self-certified by the ship's Captain, but to ensure that it was not undervalued the State reserved the right to buy the cargo at the certified price! An excellent strategy to keep Merchant's honest.

  12. I'm confused .. which is not unusual or uncommon.. however...

I was looking at doing stats for the ubiquitous Gagarthi bandits that pester legitimate travellers in Prax and was considering what magic they might have.

So looking at the Prosopædia, I find that Gagarth is the Wild Hunter, seeking lost and lonely spirits as food for his Hunt

This is not the Bandit god I was thinking of... can anyone point me in the right direction.. or give an explanation?

By Mythic Russia you mean this book @Nozbat? It's also available in PDF as well if anyone's interested.

That's the one I meant. It is written for HeroQuest but it has lots of information that is useful if you are interested in the incursions of the Northern Crusades into the Baltic and Rus riverlands.

I found the Codex Guides to the Medieval Baltic (volumes 1 & 2) very useful for background material and a whole host of more academic and historical books that are too many to mention

Merrie England is also an interesting setting.. England from 1122-1247 featuring Robin Hood. I'm not sure its still available @soltakss?

  14. What @Butters said...and..

Clockwork & Chivalry is ECW with a bit of a twist.. its an alternative history were there are Royalist Alchemists (Cavaliers) fight against the Clockwork Engines of the Roundheads.. an interesting milieu but wouldn't be my choice.

I prefer the Renaissance Deluxe and/or Black Powder of the gritty real world and am considering either a 30 years war campaign or as I have long been planning a Hanse campaign stretching through generations. But everyone's choice is different, so see what fits with your ideas. Renaissance Deluxe is very adaptable to all ideas. I also recently got Renaissance:1520 which is an excellent sourcebook for the Holy Roman Empire. My German partner and @Joerg tell me I am over-assimilating with German history and that I need to stop it (Just finished a 2 year CoC 1920 Berlin Campaign). But the HRE is vast has lots of different nations and excellent source material.. so I don't listen. Mythic Russia is also an excellent source book and if you can get your hands on Mongoose's Stupor Mundi (Frederick II Hohenstaufen), I'd recommend that too. (Just checked, neither is available on DriveThru, so I think you need to look for second hand copies)

I have both the hardback and softback PODS (both bought with PDFs) from DriveThru and can honestly say I prefer the softback versions. I stick a plastic dust-jacket over the soft backs to keep them in reasonable order.

  15. No...sadly not, my comrades were all hiding behind bushes and walls in terror while WhatsApping Mani's fort to let us in.

I also think they didn't see when the Walktapus tried to sneak up on me and I killed it with a Firearrow through the eye. Luckily, I brought a tentacle back with me as a souvenir and have given it to them. I then recalled an urgent meeting in the Old City and left them to it.
