K Peterson
I was looking through Renaissance Deluxe last night, re-reading the combat chapter. And something stood out to me since the last time I'd read it - something I hadn't remembered. When an attacker achieves a critical hit, there is no advantage whether a defender successfully, or unsuccessfully reacts to it. Same result: Attacker does maximum damage and ignores defender's armour. If you don't Crit Parry/Dodge you're screwed. And, even if you do, you're still getting hit. This struck me as odd. Is this an OpenQuest-ism? Seems a bit cruel.

K Peterson
I dug out my copy of Elric! to compare. Looks like even Elric! is more generous. This thresholds for Criticals are different, but there is some advantage to making your Parry roll vs a Critical hit.
doomedpc
It is pretty harsh - I remember raising it when it was being written. I will remind Ken he is a bit cruel (I'm guessing he'll just pull at his beard and smile). Ghostwriter
I'll use the thread to ask another lethality related question if I may: Should damage from falling really be 1d6 per 1m? Isn't it harsh compared to OQ 1d6 per 3m? I don't know what it is in RQ6, but BGB also says d6 per 3m. I'm just curious if that was the intention. K Peterson
RQ6 has falling damage at d6 (to one hit location) for 2-5m fallen. And then increases significantly at greater heights.
nclarke
May be a conversion from feet to metres issue. If the original was written as 3m and that was unconsciously converted to/read as feet and converted that would make for the one metre issue. Ghostwriter
Possibly but I'll wait for C&W to respond
doomedpc
Ouch! Obviously feel free to adjust to suit your game, but yes, it's intended to be 1D6 per metre, after (and not including) the first. Falling onto soft surfaces lessens the damage. I'd definitely consider Hero Pointing my Athletics test. Ken probably wrote it not long after a trip to the emergency room/casualty... Falling flat on your face onto concrete after being tripped up hurts -- even if your head is only going from upright to banging against the sidewalk. It gets worse the older you get. Hope your characters have decent bone density. As you get older, your bones start to deteriorate and falls get more dangerous.
