jeffjerwin
Question: if a character specialised in summoning/working with the Young Elementals of Lunar lore, would that be a spirit or a sorcerous tradition?

It could well be a theistic/mythic tradition. After all, the Seven Mothers have this as Rune Magic: Summon Darkness/Earth/Fire/Water Elemental (small only).

My daughter wants to play a lunar princess/elementalist now but a 7M approach is easier for her (she's still young) over sorcery and animism in the RQ rules. Nick Brooke
For various reasons I was chatting about the Young Elementals with Greg Stafford many moons ago (back when HeroQuest 1st ed was the cool new game in town), and we posited that to make them weird, a Lunar elementalist would probably be able to work pretty much interchangeably with elementals of spirit, divine and sorcerous origin (and this was when those were all strange distinct species, for some nonsensical Three Worlds related reason that nobody bothers with any more). So I'd go with Rune spells, and if anyone tells you that's wrong, poke them in the eye with a sharp stick. 1 Quote Community Ambassador - Jonstown Compendium, Chaosium, Inc. soltakss
I'd say this was another one of those places where it depends on where the PC is coming from. The Young Elementals exist and serve the Red Goddess. Lunar Cults are associated with the Young Elementals, so all Lunar cults can gain powers from them using Rune Magic. Lunar Traditions also get access to the Young Elementals, so Lunar shamans can gain spirits from the Young Elementals and can cast Battle/Common/Folk/Whatever Magic from them. Lunar Sorcery also has access to the Young Elementals and they can use Grimoire Sorcery spells to control/use their powers. Don't forget that there isn't a Young Elemental of Storm, so you are restricted to Darkness, Water, Earth and Fire/Sky. However, you might also be able to control Lunes and Selenes, although not part of the Young Elementals, if you are learning to summon Lunar Elementals, then those should be part of the learning.
