  1. I do not like the monograph format at all. They're like doomed to stay underground forever. They will not be taken into RPG stores, and few would order them, since the shipment often surpases the cost of the book. If Cthulhu Rising hadn't been available for free from the CR website, I would not have gotten a look at it. Ordering from Chaosium is just to expensive, at least if you live in Europe. SGL.
  2. To me, what it boils down to is either: 1) License a sci-fi setting (cost money) and try to make some thing BRPish out of it, hoping it will be good, 2) Wait for someone to make something completely new and hope it will be good, OR 3) Use a good existing BRP sci-fi setting that shows a lot of promise and which allready have a lot of support, and expand upon that one. To me the choice seems really simple. SGL.
  3. I'm not sure I like the sound of that. That's Mongoose size. I want Dorastor, Pavis & Big Rubble, Borderlands - that kind of stuff. A 64 page setting book? What can you fit into that? A setting book should be bigger, then it can later be followed by smaller supplements. SGL.
  4. Hinduism, with its multitude of strange gods would be a good pick. SGL.
  5. Do you mean a generic one or a setting with its own world and mythology, just following along the lines of mainstream fantasy? SGL.
  6. CDA = Call of Cthulhu Dark Ages. An official Call of Cthulhu setting in the middle ages. Looks good, but I haven't read it. SGL.
  7. Yes, it might be a durulz like the gloranthaphiles like to say! (anyway, they taste the same! ) Cheers, Sverre.
  8. Hehe, looks like the discussion is grinding to a halt. I've seen some of the weapons you are talking about Nightshade. I've been to the Philippines a couple of times to train the weapon based martial arts you can find there (last used during the 2nd world war against the japanese in the jungle, so pretty reality-tested). The main weapons they use are 1h swords & machetes, but also hardwood sticks and axes. Some of those axes had a very long blade stretching down to the hilt, and the use where pretty much the same with the sword. Weither swords are developed from knives only, or both knives and axes I have no idea. Kindoff hard to know for sure too, as it's a pretty long time ago they were developed.
  9. So you've considered a non-mythos Cthulhu Rising allready? How would the setting change if stripped of its Lovecraft influences & mythos element? Would it be something like the difference between RuneQuest 3rd edition & the Basic Roleplaying Monographs (essentially just name-changes), or would it alter the setting drastically? I quite like the setting as it is, and hope it would still have the same "feel" to it. Cheers, Sverre.
  10. I have finally got around to the wiki, and is starting to understand how it works now. I will use approximately one week to organize it, and then it will be opened. As wikis are favoured places for spam & sabotage, and such vile acts are more difficult to notice on a wiki, only does with a 100 posts under their belt in the forum will have editing rights. Those below that can post their suggestions and contributions in the discussion thread following the article, but cannot edit the article themselves. So, Basic Roleplaying Wiki soon to come! SGL.
  11. With this one military science fiction is an option, with the space marines. The three campaigns that are written are one for each of the typical player groups, one for civilians, one for corporate-employees and one for space marines. I fully agree with this. To sell as a Basic Roleplaying setting (not a Cthulhu setting), maybe the system name would have to be changed and obvious Lovecraftian references changed (names basically). I'll go hear with the author what he has to say. SGL.
  12. Since BRP will be a generic ruleset with 4 typical settings: Fantasy/historic, modern, superhero & sci-fi, I think there's room for 4 official settings here. Mythic Iceland is underway from Chaosium allready. What I like about Cthulhu Rising as the sci-fi setting (in addition to looking like a REALLY interesting setting), is that it is allready made for BRP (lots of stuff ready for print) and allows for highly versatile play (3 main types: civilian, corporate employees & space marines). SGL.
  13. Hi Pedro! Great to see you onboard! Can you tell us some about what the book will contain? And even if there's no release date yet, can you give us any rough estimate? Cheers, Sverre.
  14. The name would maybe have to be changed and direct references to Lovecraft stuff erased for it to be accepted as a Basic Roleplaying and not Call of Cthulhu setting, but I think the mythos inspiration could stay put so it stayed a sci-fi horror game. Alien races and monsters encountered out in the galaxy is all that is needed for that. The mythos inspiration is what makes it feel more like Aliens than Star Trek (or traditional Call, it doesn't feel like that at all). Hi Sarge! Welcome to BRP Central! What games have you written for Cthulhu Rising? Cheers, Sverre.
  15. I strongly belive Chaosium will need to provide some strong official settings for Basic Roleplaying, to have the great success we are all hoping for. Generic supplement can only get you so far, as they usually lack some of the flavour you can get with a setting. For the sci-fi setting, there is allready a monograph out there, which I think would fit perfectly: Cthulhu Rising. Cthulhu Rising is a sci-fi setting 300 years into the future, where big corporations are exploring the stars and colonizing new planets. The players groups are usually either civilians, employees of one of the corporations, or space marines. 3 campaigns have allready been written for this game and is available for the Cthulhu Rising website, together with lots of other material free for download. The setting startet as a pure BRP setting, but was later released as Cthulhu Rising, because some inspiration is taken from the Cthulhu Mythos. The feel I get is more like Aliens than Lovecraft though. Have a look at their website: CTHULHU RISING: Horror Roleplaying in a Dark Future What do you think? Could this be something we should push Chaosium to make the official BRP sci-fi setting? To me, it looks extremely interesting. SGL.
  16. So, anything more you can tell us about the cover Jason? The news section are screaming for more rumours you know... SGL.
  17. I've made a draft of some rules/introduction for BRP Central, and would like to hear some opinions/suggestions. Anyway, here it is: ---------------------------- Welcome to BRP Central and the Basic Roleplaying Forum! The Rules of BRP Central is pretty basic: Keep it civil. There are no moderators here, so please self-moderate your posts. If discussions grow heated, consider using PMs to resolve the issue rather than getting personal in the threads. Respect the copyright laws. Do not post copyrighted material in the forum, on the wiki or in the gallery without clear permission from the copyright holder in question. Unless a specific copyright notice have been added, all the written content in the forum and the wiki are considered to fall under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported License. This website have been created to support Chaosium's new Basic Roleplaying game and the BRP community. So far, we have a news section, forums, a wiki (soon), a gallery and a link list. A review section will be added once the rule book is out, and a brp fanzine is in the planning. Feel free to request new sections and functions to this site if there is anything you feel are missing, and I will see what I can do.
  18. This is true. In BRP you can fire arrows at the same rate as a 9mm, and that's not really realistic. SGL.
  19. Gotta get the wiki up and running so we can save some of these suggestions. Do anyone know how it's handled in the core book? SGL.
  20. Well, you're my poll-teacher, it only reflect back at you! Vote pie. Pie is ALWAYS an option. The thread is posted before the poll. You're too quick! SGL.
  21. You're too fast for me! The poll wasn't written yet! I mean hero points/fate points to get out of trouble. SGL.
  22. So, what's the majority vote? SGL.
