  1. Doesn't your browser render smileys?
  2. Ive had a system called d100 up on my personal website for at least 6 years, so I hereby claim ownership d100 System
  3. Skill levels of 100%+ cause no problems whatsoever in our games, we use the following rules 1. Rolls of 96-99 are always failure and 00 always fumble regardless of skill level. 2. "Feinting", anyone can drop up to half their skill level in an opposed test and drop their opponents defense by the same amount. This means that guys with 125% broadsword could drop their skill to say 90% thus dropping their opponents parry by 35%. We call it "feinting" because it is mostly used in combat, but we also allow its use in any other contested roll so for example stealth vs listen, etc.
  4. You could just set a hard limit (say 75%) for skills outside your chosen profession. This would create a kind of "class" system to some degree but I guess its the easiest and simplest way of preventing PCs that are good at everything. Of course you could go the cyberpunk way and just kill off any PC that's starting to get too powerful
  5. Hi Nick, I think Id more likely be talking about a fantasy world inspired by Tribe 8 synthesis, rather than a wholesale T8 conversion. Just to throw another element to the mix I also started thinking about Unknown armies Flip Flops. Perhaps instead of straight +5% per MP bonuses for the use of eminences perhaps the spending of a couple of MPs could allow a Flip Flop on as skill roll? I don't really know, I'm just throwing sloppy ideas at the wall and seeing what sticks
  6. This is a cross post from RPG.net.... So I was sitting about my house last night looking through my Stormbringer books in anticipation of the DBRP book thats coming out in the next few months and I was also thinking about the "fantasy worlds without magic" thread (that was going on on rpg.net). When I got to thinking about Tribe 8s Eminences & Conjunctional Synthesis systems. I started to think about a fantasy world where in there were no gods or basic magic as such but instead everything was based around the concept of personal spirits or Eminences, and that great feats of magic could only be performed by using rituals to amplify ones personal Eminences or those of the environment around you (I was thinking of River spirits and Mountain Spirits etc.) I was thinking that perhaps at character generation each PC could choose 2 tribe 8 style Eminences which they could use to augment actions with the spending of MPs to the tune of +5% per MP spent. Those who chose to study "spirit magic" as a separate field could do externally affecting magics by summoning the Eminences of their surrounding environs to achieve effects. I'm not sure of the details yet, but I think such a system could be the basis of an interesting and different fantasy world. How would anyone in the Tribe 8/BRP crossover fanbase do it? Comments? Ideas? Suggestions?
  7. Well in RQ 3 sorcerers could only get weapons skills up to a max of Dex x4 (or was it x3 I cant remember) it was rationalised as not having time to pursue and maintain such skills since they spent so much time working on magic and lore. In my own games I stopped anyone with a POW of under 16 having magic of any kind.
  8. So Tom what is he hoping to do with SQ that isnt available in GORE? Also are you making Continuum this year? It would be nice to put a face to a name
  9. I agree. Now a wuxia themed setting would be something else entirely. But I guess it would have to have some Chi (Ki) style powers and/or other mechanisms for making PCs and major NPCs a bit more "Over the top".
  10. So does anyone know what the situation is with for profit self publishing IE: the cheap PDF market? Is it possible to publish PDFs using BRP or will it be necessary to publish works like this using GORE?
  11. Oh I've done worse over the years on RPG.net. You should have seen the reaction I got when I basically said "The idea behind ChtuluTech is a load of kewl powers over substance crap and I hope it fails" over there. That was a teacup full of fury to be sure
  12. I've booked. Looking forward to it already.
  13. I'm definitely up for Continuum I used to live in Leicester and still have lots of friends up there.
  14. Seems a lot better now. Its definitely more readable than it was.
  15. Reasons I dont like D&D let me list the ways.... 1. Classes - too artificial, and stop me building what I want 2. Levels - Why does everything increase all at once what's the reasoning or media based justification behind that? 3. Expanding Hit points - Easy way to model really tough competent characters, BUT. Healing doesnt make any sense in the context of PCs with 55 hps vs normal 5 HP people. Does high HPS = lots of dodging and avoidance skill or is it simply raw toughness & willpower? How come if you tie up a high HP character they don't loose most of their HPs straight away? 4. The magic system makes having wizards that are anything like those in the most popular genre fiction basically impossible. 5. In more recent D&D versions FEATs, piddly +1 and +2 bonuses to certain actions with feats make everything much more of a pain in the arse to track for players and x10 for the GM. really bad design decision IMHO. 6. Basic attack bonus (BAB) being level & class based rather than a skill. Why do I have to play a cleric whose BAB goes up each level even if im the priestess of a pacifist healing god? Ill tell you why because BAB being attached to level is wrong!!!
  16. That's all well and good as long as you don't mind losing money on this project.
  17. Yes my leanings towards rules light, theme heavy settings are well known on RPG.net its true. That doesn't make the questions any less valid. Why would I pick this up over say Glorantha or playing in Moorcocks multiverse or the Warhammer world? What are main themes and ideas in the setting? What types of story is it best for. There is no way in hell I'm reading through 100 pages of bumpf to find out if I'm going to like something or not never mind 600+ Basically games that are all about the number of different races and nations (OMG!!! 50+ playable races, over 100 nations, etc, etc) are not what I'm after in games these days. I have plenty of well supported and professionally produced kitchen sink settings. Any game that breaks through now has to be exceptional in one regard or another IMHO, having a solid set of core themes is one of these areas. Old School style settings are fine, I just have enough good ones already (Stormbringer, Glorantha, Warhammer, Artesia: Known Worlds, etc) EDIT: Also the setting sounds VERY similar to "Gatecrasher" look it up its been around for a good while (Its a FUDGE setting)
  18. Sounds like an overly complex kitchen sink fantasy heartbreaker kind of thing with no core theme. In other words, "having lots of kewl stuff in does not a good setting make". What do PCs do in this game? What is it actually about? What marks it out from 100 other kitchen sink settings?
  19. Why not just get rid of it? It adds nothing except download time and server bandwidth costs. All the text on the front page is too big, if you look at it the difference between bolded text and non bolded is minimal. IMHO al the text should be the same size as the text in the forum sections that way the transfer is not jarring.
  20. Sorry to be negative about this place but.... 1. Its really ugly. The graphics are too fussy and unnecessary. Simple is good, there is a reason google is the no1 search engine 2. The backgrounds are too dark making the text harder to read and the fonts are too big. In design generally backgrounds behind text are frowned upon. People don't visit sites for graphics they visit for content. The text is the thing. Seriously the old page was easier to read and more functional. Please go back to it.
  21. Well I've been running a Fading Suns game with BRP on and off for several years now and the only things I had to do was a life path for character generation (Noble Houses, Guilds, alien races, etc) and some rules for energy shields
  22. Its a bit more convenient than the 20 marked poker chips, though I can see how that has its charm too
  23. This is the best and most interesting article on Gygax and the history of D&D I've read this week. Dungeon Master: The Life and Legacy of Gary Gygax Luck,
  24. Todays Order of the Stick.... Giant In the Playground Games
  25. Yes you are over reacting. As long as there are people willing to play BRP will never die, I fully intend to be playing BRP in 20 years time.
